Sound product knowledge is hard to find, and when you do come across it, especially for something you care about, it’s a joy. Singaporeans can be a fanatical lot about hobbies and when these hobbies translate into a business model, it can really be a thing of beauty. The fine folks at 1855 The Bottle Shop are just such a bunch of oenophiles and spirit enthusiasts that I love dearly. The fact that they’ve set up shop in my backyard is a plus, a HUGE plus. The Bottle Shop carries wines and spirits, and custom is by the bottle. Sake is available chilled, but if you have a particular bottle in mind and would like it chilled, call ahead(about an hour’s heads up would be nice) and Ernest will get it ready for you. I usually stock up on single malts at my other go to place, Maison du Whisky, but 1855 does have a decent collection of highland single malts and blends. I might just have to give these guys a go the next time I’m tempted to try a highland scotch and need to open a bottle to sample with kakis. You can tipple at the in-shop bar, at a table street-side discretely screened off by planters or in a separate«cocktail» zone next door that used to be a florists. Or bring along a chilled bottle of ginjo to Jalan Tua Kong Mee Pok just around the corner for a truly inspired pairing.
