Food is cheap, tastes ok. Stuff was either really salty or had a hint of «old dirty oil» flavour though. Won’t be in a hurry to come back…

Now that I have been away from Singapore for a few years, everything I eat when I come back is super delicious. What blew me away and made me come back a second time on this brief trip was the wasabi mayo prawn. It was just the right amount of burn from the wasabi and not too much mayo. Holy hell was this delicious!

This store used to be at 167 Neil Road and had moved to the current location last year. This is a zichar and steamboat air-conditioned eatery that dish out delicious eats. I would love to try their popular fish head steamboat one day but till now I have only tried their zi char. I like their prawn paste chicken and also one of their off the menu dishes, claypot lao shu fen(Mee Tai Bak). The Mee Tai Bak is cooked in a brown broth that has vegetable, seafood and minced meat with an egg. Its delicious and rather addictive. I prefer this to the fried hor fun as this is not too oily.

Having worked in the Chinatown area, I walked past this restaurant a zillion times without ever thinking of eating there. It always looked crowded and the prices seem reasonable — typical zhi char prices but in an air con place. Somehow, I never did try it until the other day. It was a rainy weekday lunch and everywhere was crowded. Tired of the other food places in the area, the missus and I sought refuge here. It was busy as usual and the noise level was just deafening. Anal chatter filled the air and so did oil stenches. Fortunately, something on the menu caught my eye. Deep fried hor fun. And the dish did not disappoint when it arrived. Despite my reservations, it was not oily at all. A mix of deep fried hor fun to a crisp — taste like plain koropok, and standard zhi char hor fun. It was a perfect combo. If not for the noise and crowds and smells, I would give them 4 – 5 stars easy just based on this dish. Easily one of the better food outlets in the area.

In the heart of Chinatown, next to maxwell food market, this unassuming zhi char restaurant is airconditioned and rather cramped. It looks a little dingy and when it crowded it gets very noisy inside. I often sit outside. There are only 2 small tables outside the restaurant, and large families usually sit inside for their family dinners on weekend nights. There is no service outside, so you have to walk in to ask for anything. Still, the food is good and cheap. Even with a full house, try manage to get your ordered served up within 15 – 20 minutes of ordering. So we ordered the spinach with 3 eggs, which was quite well done. Spinach wasn’t overcooked and had a mild crunch to it, but the sauce was a bit too gelatinous for my liking. Not a lot of egg was in the dish either. We also ordered the salted egg yolk pork chop, and it was really tasty, with a salty, crisp exterior and juicy meat inside. Lastly, we had the Mongolian tofu which came highly recommended. It’s also the priciest tofu dish as it comes with prawn(4 pieces) and thin pieces of scallops(3 pieces). The tofu itself was interesting, shaped like a squarish donut, and it was a little doughy. Very unlike any kind of tofu I’ve ever had. They’re a bit stingy with the ingredients, but it was a very affordable meal, costing us about $ 45 in total, including drinks. Definitely value for money, especially if you come in a group. Would like to come back and try the fish head steamboat, many tables had ordered it and it looked good!
