Belleville’s Watering Hole & Diner

This place is quaint and the food is not your average run of the mill diner food yummy

Our party of 4 stopped in late evening for a light snack. We were greeted with a friendly smile and seated immediately. The wait staff was excellent – attentive and friendly. My husband found the tomato and rice soup so delicious that he ordered another serving. Another in our party proclaimed the seafood chowder the best he had ever had. Two of us ordered desserts and found them to be perfectly delicious too. In fact, when the ice cream on top of our moist and delicious brownie was all gone, the waitress offered another scoop. Great view, wonderful food, and excellent service.

I can not for the life of me understand how this place has the high ratings it does. I suppose there aren’t that many ratings in total but the average being so high is what made us give it a try. Victoria has so so many amazing places to eat — but we were travel weary and wanted to stay close to our hotel. The one review about it not being a typical tourist trap and defying the norm of restaurants in hotels must have been a review on the kitchen’s blue moon. This place is awful. The salad was drenched (soggy, drowning) in overly sweet dressing. The butter chicken was worse than a no name jar of dollar store sauce with chicken jerky. Speaking of jerky– the Wiener schnitzel was like beef jerky. I have a hard time believing it was any kind of veal. I know I know– why on earth did we order butter chicken and Wiener schnitzel at the same place? Surly not both can be done well in the same kitchen. But three of the dishes our table ordered were at the recommendation of our server. And the kids burger– after confirming it only had ketchup, it came slathered in mayo. The girl that brought it to us suggested we just take off the bun. Um. We all had stomachaches all evening. I know there are lots of different tastes/​but this was just awful– all the meals. $ 100 for a family of four’s indigestion is tough to swallow. With all the options in the lovely city– take an extra 10 minutes and walk up to Yates & Johnson and enjoy a meal at the Local. Or even better drive 10 minutes to Spinnakers.

I gave this rating based on service, beer selection, and quality of food of which Belleville excelled in all categories based. Also, I had dinner there twice and lunch and it was the same dining experience. The foods meals were made with fresh ingredients and it felt like there was a chef managing the minute details of our food. The beer selection was amazing but expensive, Hoyne Dark Matter Dark Ale taking my breath away. Wish I had more time to visit the brewery and bring a couple kegs home with me. Kidding. Thanks Belleville for treating me like a star.

I have two general rules regarding restaurants. First is that I avoid any attached to hotels. Second is that I give out 5 star reviews sparingly.
While visiting Victoria over the 4^th of July weekend, I violated both rules. We often escape to Canada over the 4^th, as our Labrador simply does NOT do fireworks. The problem is that Canada has some strict laws regarding having pets on restaurant patios, so finding a place to eat is sometimes a challenge. While walking by Belleville’s (at the base of the Days Inn), we spotted two large water bowls just outside the patio. Taking that as a good sign, we asked if we could have a table on the patio edge so our dog could be next to us, just outside the patio area. The staff could not have been more gracious and welcoming, to all 3 of us. So, simply based on that, the place was going to get a good rating.
But then they truly earned it. The food was spectacular. My wife had a beet salad (I took her word for it that it was great…) and I had an amazingly good French dip made with pork rib. The bar carries a number of local micros, another must in my book to get a top rating. The staff was great and provided prompt service, and our server shared pictures of her dog with us.
To top it off, the place has a fantastic location with a great view, a very large patio area, and background music at a level that doesn’t disturb your meal or conversation. The final piece to the «5» rating was the manager coming by and not just asking how everything was, but seemingly taking a real interest. That always impresses me.
If you’re in the Inner Harbour area and you want something close but off the crazy-​busy Government Street area, go to Belleville’s.

Great food horible service had to get up and get my own water refill waitress very bad then acted put out that I left a small tip. Too bad food was great

Some entrees are excellent like the seafood pasta, but our chicken sandwich was mediocre. They ran out of ice the night we visited. Long Island ice tea is excellent, but over priced.

Great place to chill on a Saturday afternoon. Good service and the lemon curd French toast with a Fat Tug was awesomely good. Beautiful view of the Inner harbour as well.

Sat outside. Prompt service. My wife and I ordered the same thing. Great burger and sweet potato fries. Would have given 5 stars but server was wrong when we asked if one order of fries was enough to share thinking we would get a different side with the other burger. It is enough to share, and we could not finish all the fries. Regardless, food was excellent and highly recommend this place.

Just had breakfast, the breakfast sandwich with hash browns.
The service was friendly, food came quickly and was very tasty. Will come again!

Much improved from the Swiftsure! Had brunch there today. The menu was interesting and the selections were great!
