Picture it… Vancouver, January 2016, it’s cold, it’s wet, it’s raining. What would go better than a piping hot bowl of Spicy Ramen with beef. That’s what I had in mind today for lunch and was very disappointed. What I got was a lukewarm bowl of broth, noodles were exactly like the Nissan instant kind we ate in University, a massive pile of sprouts and ¼ up of cold syrupy beef. And they spice? meh not even enough to make one say«ooh spicy» Yuck! I’ve eaten here before and it was okay but today was a total let down. I observed the man at the table next to me picking over a mushroom fried rice dish that was covered in a brown syrup. The owner’s wife came by and they exchanged a few words in Korean and she ended up taking the dish back and returning with a fresh dish with even more brown syrup. It’s too bad the better places are a long walk from the downtown core. Gyoza Bar is very good but it can get pricey for a bowl of soup. Other recommendations in the area are always welcomed!

Low quality ramen. Not japanese. Tasted like food court. Noodles were ok. Service was fast. Prices were fair. Glasses and tea cups were dirty and stained. I shall never return.

The ramen slut has eaten here many a time and it’s a decent place for ramen. The food service is really fast and the quality consistency is very good. I’ve had almost all of their ramen but I will only post once I’ve re-tried them all. I’m currently having Shio and it’s a solid 3.5÷5. Broth is a little too light, I would have liked something a bit richer but it is Shio and it definitely warms the soul. I like how corn is a standard topping and not an add on. I wish bamboo shoots were a standard topping. The pork is really good, I wish there was three pieces instead of two. Shio Ramen: 3.5÷5 stars

Miso soup was really really salty. Ordered a Kimchi fried rice with no meat or seafood because I’m allergic to seafood. When it came, it had shrimp. So I told the waitress I had ordered it with no shrimp to which she replied«oh. Really» and carried my food away. Came back not even 5 minutes later with the EXACT same plate, with all the shrimp picked out. I know because halfway through eating it, I found a piece of shrimp they missed. Carrots in the rice were cold, so raw that they were crunchy, rice was lukewarm, flavor was okay, but definitely overpriced for the quality. Most likely will not be back.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with many of the other reviewers: the broth is bland and the noodles were chewy. I have only been there once, however, so maybe I went on an off day, but I doubt it.

There’s way better options in the city for noodles. So many ramen places are opening up and udon is easy to find too. This place has sub-par noodles that I’d expect to be tacked onto the back of a sushi menu as fluff. Instead, their noodles are their primary dish. The service isn’t great either. Friendly-ish but communication is difficult if you don’t speak Japanese

Disappointed. Soup is very bland with a slightly bitter taste. Noodle is not real ramen noodle, but a sort of substitute that is oily and soggy. Portion is big, price is very competitive and waitresses are friendly with exception of the casher. But all are hardworking people. If you are a ramen enthusiast, do not go there.

Ahhhhh ramen! Chewy, soupy… what more could you ask for? A large selection of ramen at a fair price. No wonder this place is so busy. Fortunately, they open at 10 in the morning, so it’s easy to avoid the lunch rush. Ramen for breakfast, anyone? One major complaint by me and my friends is that the broths are rather bland. Unfortunately this is a very big deal in the world of ramen. It’s also a shame that eggs aren’t available as an add-on. You can judge the quality of the cook/chef, by their ability to present a golden, soft boiled egg, except when it’s not even on the menu. Surprisingly good noodles for a non-Japanese run joint, but the flaws make it hard to be really in love with this place.

Best comfort food ever! yUM! curry chicken and fried rice, not just ramen… Husband and wife team who serve it up quick and tasty! Went there after the lunch rush near closing time and it was perfect timing! Keep in mind they are not open on weekends and close at 4pm! Ordered curry chicken with fried rice total with tax ten dollars and half Enjoyed the curry although used to be thicker — smells like buttery cloves and onion a traditional japanese style curry small pieces of chicken — could have been more four shrimp in fried rice, lots of egg, tiny pieces of carrot and some peas, tiny pork mostly the fat and lots of canola oil on bottom of takeout from the rice Used to be better about three and half years ago… so much shrimp and pork and chicken that you had to take it back to work with you. Now its still considerably rich, but contents a lot less. Rising rents, expensive groceries makes sense that food amount and contents becoming slimmer Still delicious and not as salty as before. Enjoyed it nonetheless!

Whereas I would consider Motomachi Shokudo on Denman to be a glimpse of a morn modern take on ramen, Shogun seems to be trying to stay more traditional in its roots. Quick attentive service and reasonable food makes this a pretty smart pick for lunch breaks. Sat down, flipped through the menu for a few minutes, was presented with a mug(yes, a mug) of green tea, and had my order in about ten minutes. Ordered the Spicy Miso ramen and a «small»(three piece) of gyoza. The gyoza came first and weren’t bad at all, though I wish they had been a little crispier. The ramen took me off-guard a bit with a somewhat murky broth and a startlingly large ring of miso paste around a topping of bean sprouts, corn, and ground pork. I’ve never encountered miso ramen where the miso part isn’t incorporated into the soup, so I stirred it in and gave it a taste. I happen to enjoy salty food, but I’m pretty sure that this broth would have been *too* salty for most people. Three quarters of the way through the bowl I couldn’t finish it because it was too just too salty and miso-y, which is unfortunate because most of the ground pork and corn floats to the bottom of the bowl so you can’t get at it without scooping up all that condensed miso flavor. I’d go back again, though I think I’d try something else next time. And for dinners and special occasions I’ll still be making my rounds out to Motomachi.

omg who is eating at this place? It sits beside one of the filthiest lanes in the city, in a building that looks like it’s going to fall down at any moment. You go inside. You sit on the right side; it smells like pee. So you move to a table closer to the kitchen; it smells like stinky feet. So you move to the other side; it smells like rats. Meanwhile, you’ve ordered Miso soup. It comes, you taste it. It’s greasy and meaty – not Miso soup. Barf-o-rama. You toss some money on the table and leave in a hurry. You turn right – glance down that awful lane. It’s the middle of the day and there’s a dead rat being torn apart by a crow. Beside this restaurant’s overflowing, stinking dumpster. I can’t believe this place is even open.

Tiny portions. I ordered a bento box and got was surprised. Rice had only 2 peas on it. There was 1 piece of a tiny broccoli. Sushi rolls were just microscopic. Salmon sushi was not fresh. It’s not supposed to have such a strong fish smell.

A client of mine invited me for a business lunch at this place. Location is great, that’s why the second star there. 1. They forgot my order, well. part of it. 2. The sushi was super dry. -.- 3. The salmon sashimi was frozen. -.- Wouldn’t go again nor tell anyone to go there.

It was raining and we want to get something hot to eat, so we stopped by here for a quick lunch with a friend of mine and my parents. My parents and I all ordered their lunch box(bento) special while my friend ordered a fried rice dish. The food came out very quickly and it had a very reasonable portions. The prices are good especially the restaurant is near the Downtown Vancouver area. After taxes and tips, we paid $ 50 total for our meal, not a bad deal for the location of the restaurant. The restaurant closes on Saturdays and Sundays and you might hit a lunch time rush, so either go there early or go there late, they close their doors for the day at 4pm. But always call first to make sure they are open if you aren’t sure. Enjoy!

Since I was sick, I had a major craving for some ramen. A quick consultation on Google Maps led me to Sapporo Ramen Shogun since it was only a few minutes away from the office. I vaguely recall there being a «established since» sign, but I don’t really remember the year; I remember it dated back to before the 2000s though. I had the chashu ramen with shio base(~$ 7.50). Although there was a generous helping of pork with my ramen, that seemed to be the only topping of substance.(The few niblets of corn and the few bean sprouts do not count, in my opinion.) The chashu was very lean, but not too tough. I prefer my pork to be a bit fattier. The broth itself was alright — I don’t think I can make a fair judgement when all my sinuses are congested. Azim had the chicken ramen($ 7.50) which looked to be soy sauce based. The noodles at Sapporo Ramen weren’t bad; they didn’t have the perfect springiness that I tend to look for but they weren’t overcooked either, so I can’t complain. Overall the meal at Sapporo Ramen wasn’t the best, but it did the job. Ramen is definitely better than chicken noodle soup.

I had lunch at Shogun and ordered the Miso Gomoku Ramen, which came with half an egg, 1 prawn tempura and 2 slices of pork. The egg was a little cold, but no big deal. The slices of pork was 50% fat so I only ate the lean parts. The broth was delicious, wasn’t overly salty and didn’t taste full of MSG. The size of the ramen is good. I was full after my bowl, but if you’re famished, it might be just enough to satisfy you. However, since ramen expands, just wait 20 minutes and you’ll be fine. Service from all the ladies /waitresses were great. They were warm, friendly and efficient. The man who takes your money can use a little personality. Walk up to counter. «Hi, I’d like to pay for my bill.» *Holds out his hand for my receipt and card. *I pay for the meal *He starts printing out the receipt. Not looking at me «I don’t need a reciept. Thanks.» *Silence. *I walk out. Lucky the taste and other service balances out the man at the counter. I’ll go back again, but won’t be rushing.

So I paid $ 14 for chicken ramen, after tax and tip. The serving size looks huge, but it’s deceiving. The bean sprouts alone could fill a miso soup size bowl(I know this, because I extracted them just to see, since I was having a hard time finding where the actual ramen was). I can handle a few beansprouts, but this was way overboard, totally overwhelming the meal. I wasn’t a big fan of the soup either(a sign of a good ramen place is if I slurp up most of the soup along with the ramen). On the plus side there was a generous serving of meat. Service was quick. Place was nice. FYI they do not take Amex. This place definitely benefits from the downtown lunch crowd and the fact they aren’t located near(thus don’t have to compete with) the cluster of Ramen places on Robson and Denman.

My wife and I dropped by here today on our first day in Vancouver. It was pouring rain outside and we were soaked. We managed to get a table in the middle of the lunch rush without a problem. We ordered the Chashu Udon and the Gomoku Ramen along with some gyoza. The gyoza were tasty, but I prefer mine to be crispier than the ones here. Both bowls of noodles were nice and warm which was great considering the cold weather! My bowl was a little overfilled with sprouts, but other than that it was quite tasty. All in all the service was great, the food was ok and the price was fine for a downtown location. I’d definitely come back if I was in the area, but I think I’d aim to try one of the fried rice bowls instead as those looked more to my liking :).

I like Shogun. It’s a bit overpriced but I guess that’s what you get for this location. Good noodles, good broth, good meat, good veggies. I found that everything is very balanced in proportion. A bowl of ramen will cost about $ 9-$ 10, tax and tip included. I like that the broth is lighter and a bit cleaner in taste than some other joints that have a thicker broth. Business closes at 4pm on weekdays so this place really caters to the downtown lunch crowd. It’s a nice, light alternative to Kintaro, Benkei and Motomachi.
