Yet another delicious meal here. The place was half empty last night which was surprising! But hey, we didn’t have to wait for a table in the rain so I shouldn’t complain. I learned from the server that Tuesday is where they try new things as «testers», and only on tuesdays. Lucky us! I believe they’re trying to see what fish are going to do well outside of the usual salmon, tuna, etc. We ordered a lot: — miso soup — bbq squid — regular battera — assorted tempura — 2 pieces of amaebi — chef’s special sashimi — miso black cod — tsubugai(whelk sashimi) The regular stuff was amazing as usual. I love the deep fried amaebi head. When I see customers not eat their heads, I’m always tempted to ask if I can take theirs, but that’d be creepy and rude(but the thought has crossed my mind many a times). The sashimi was delicious. It was flounder with a ponzu sauce, flounder skin, amberjack, hamachi, toro and sockeye salmon. Flounder, it turns out, is a very bland fish. It literally had no flavor and took on whatever flavor you put on it. The ponzu was lovely for it. I even dunked my other finish in the ponzu: P Really liked the texture of the flounder skin too. Cut up into small pieces so it wasn’t too big a chewy mess. The miso black cod was nice. It was«wetter» than other miso black cods I’ve had but it was a welcomed change. It added a layer of salty creaminess to a fish that was already«creamy”/buttery itself. Yum. They also offered a Chef’s Omakese but I was hesitant to get it because I want to know what’s coming. Also, the last time I had an Omakese, I wasn’t remotely fully so I wasn’t going to risk $ 50 to be only sorta kinda full. Total bill came out to $ 77 and change. Completely worth it. Absolutely delicious meal. Definitely satisfied my sushi craving.

Good little japanese place on Cambie st. i tried the tuna don was really good. maybe to much rice, but the fish was really fresh and good portion. The best part is they have fresh wasabi and that with sushi make all the difference, assuming you will get fresh fish and perfectly cook rice. price: right. Ambience: the bar was tight so i would like to have some more space between sits but well not a deal breaker. food: good quality. service, good and efficient.

One of the best in Vancouver for sushi. Sushi are always fresh, decent sized at fair price. Visitors should note this place is usually very busy and space is limited. Once you are done eating, waiters will frequently ask if you need anything else. Not ideal if you are on a date and don’t want waiters keep disturbing your conversations. Go for the food here but definitely not a place to chill.

One of the best sushi restaurants in town. It can be extremely busy, but service is very quick. The fish is fresh, tuna tataki is fantastic and the spicy salmon roll is perfect. Love the pokki sticks at the end of the meal too.

Pretty decent sushi place and a solid«4.0» on the Unilocal scale(which basically ranges from 3 – 5 in 0.5 increments, as anything below a 3 probably will close down and be irrelevant). I’ve been here a couple of times and have seen some unique, interesting specials on the menu that you rarely find elsewhere — Whelk, Monkfish liver and Aburi mackerel were on offer last. Good cuts, good service, everything tastes right. A sound choice for sushi/Japanese food in the neighborhood.

Was played up in the reviews… but… well, it was ok. Nothing overly wrong… just nothing overly stand out either. I got a veggie roll and yaki-soba. The soba was one of the driest(usually a little oily… it is a fried noodle dish after all), the veggie roll was good(prefer the one at Tsuki a little more). The wife ordered her usual chopped scallop cone(it was good), and she got the house special roll(without asking or looking what was in it). She found it too ‘fishy’. I don’t eat seafood, so I can’t understand how anything expected to be with fish can be too fishy, but she explained it as there were a lot of varieties of fish in it, and some of them weren’t her favourite kinds. If I was in the area, I’d maybe go back… but wouldn’t go out of my way.

I love shiro. Japanese sushi chefs. Rolls fresh, good size not too big not too small. I recommend their grilled salmon belly and spicy fried ebi. Their sashimi is also super fresh and tasty. If you prefer quality like myself you will like shiro. I am super picky about my Japanese food. I appreciate that they don’t make gigantic rolls that are only big because of all the rice and actually these big rolls often lack taste and style. You will find decent size rolls and in the end you will be satisfied because of freshness and tastiness. The only downside is they don’t have a lot of choices for bento boxes but otherwise it’s worth trying.

Crunch roll was great, Shiro roll was fresh(a bit too much rice though but lots of good ingredients), monk fish liver and salmon cheeks were a bit bland(I’ve definitely had better). Overall, 4 stars for freshness and taste /texture of rolls. I’d go back for rolls, sushi and sashimi but was not for other items. Service was good, ambience was good… I’ll be back when I’m in the area!

This place is very good, pricing is spot on for high quality fresh fish. Mackerel is one of the most difficult items to keep fresh for sashimi(so the Japanese say when I resided there) but they prep’d it just fine here. Very rare in Vancouver. They have a about a dozen items on their specials menu. I ordered an assorted Sushi plus a vege sunomono. The sunomono for about 3.50 tittered on the small size. Decors are very conservative, seating is spacious enough even though it’s fairy busy on a Saturday night. Most important of all staff and chef are all Japanese and speak it. This venue has been here for eons and I’m glad I’ve «re-found» it and can consider it for future dinning. No Reservation on Saturday(but not sure about other times).

It was… OK. Had a seat at the bar, placed my order of a miso soup, BC, negitoro, and unagi rolls. Tuna tataki as well. I was informed that they were out of BC rolls at 530, which I assume they meant that they were out of salmon skin. Opted for a salmon/avocado roll, and received a tuna/avocado roll instead. Unagi roll was never delivered. The ponzu for the tataki was weak and bland, and the miso soup had too much soy sauce in it. Service was adequate. I’ll try it again to give them the benefit of the doubt.

let me start shiro with: japanese owned. and everything lived up to expectations :) had dinner here with family and we loved everything we ordered! especially the assorted sashimi. the tuna melted in our mouths and the salmon was equally fresh and delicious. shiro reminds me of japanese restaurants our family used to go when i was little, it offers a little bit of everything, from teriyaki, cut rolls, sashimi, and even monk fish liver(which they sadly ran out of), you’re bound to find something you’ll like. the restaurant itself is quite small, but it wasn’t difficult to get a table. there’s a small parking lot for the plaza. i’m not sure if they offer omakase, but i would definitely come here for omakase! there are few seats at the sushi bar :)

This is the best quality/price sushi in the area, including Toshi’s. We tend to order basics– salmon sashimi, scallop roll, Cali roll, negitoro, that kind of thing. And Shiro consistently puts out fresh tasting fish and well prepared rolls. It’s a litte bit pricier than the cheap-o places(maybe 2 – 3 bucks more per person per full meal) but the taste and quality are way, way better. It’s small and there is often a lineup at peak times, but it usually moves pretty quick. I’ve never waited more than 10 or 15 minutes. Service is fast and friendly.

My husband and I went because of all the great reviews — we’re currently touring all of the top ranked sushi places in Vancouver. We ordered a variety of sashimi, negitoro, and miso soup. We were NOT impressed at all with the negitoro — it was mushy, sort of a paste of tuna and green onion, and not appealing. The miso soup was just meh. The sashmi was ok, but I’ve had better from mall sushi places. Prior review said Shiro served real Japanese Wasabi, but this was just horseradish tinted green. It wasn’t real wasabi. We’ve heard the place changed ownership this Spring, so maybe that explains it?

I came here with my bf because so many people recommended it to us and I read really good reviews on Unilocal.Unfortunately we didn’t have the best experience or maybe because we both had our hopes up high. We went on a monday night at around 7pm. The place is really small with bar seats and like maybe a max of 10 tables for 2 around the restaurant. The place wasn’t full during peak hours and it was a nice sunny day when I went. But they did have a lot of people order take out. Service was meh nothing special about it. We ordered the shiro roll because it seems to be what they featured as their specialty. I didn’t feel like it was that good. My bf didn’t like it cause it tasted too fishy for his liking. I thought it was ok. I think we over ordered again with other rolls and combos. What I really liked was their red tuna roll. Kinda reminded me of the salmon roll. It looks like they make their own wasabi which is pretty awesome. Asides from that I felt like we can get most of the things here from Sushi Nanimo which is one probably cheaper and closer to home for us. I would like to comment on their washroom being pretty clean and they have those toilets that wash your butt. Not bad. It’s good for a cold winter time where the seat cover is warm. Not sure if they have that for the men side too. I would recommend it to others to try it out only if you are close by. If not I don’t believe it’s worth the drive all the way there. Their parking lot is relatively small but there is residential parking too.

Super picky eater here! My friends brought me to Shiro for my first sushi experience. Yes, first! The service was great and the food was beautifully presented. I would definitely go for a round 2! Check out my full experience here: Bonus: There’s a bathroom bidet. What?!

Very high quality sushi and sashimi. They serve a very nice, well marbled, Toro Skip everything else. Tempura lacks that panko crunch; The rice dishes are kind of on the Osaka-mushy side(you know what I mean if you’ve done food tours of Osaka) I come back here when none of my other favourites are open.

The Aburi Battera was extremely yummy. It’s one of their specials and apparently they only make 4 orders per day! To be honest, I wouldn’t have ordered this if our server hadn’t recommended it. It’s mackerel pressed sushi that has been flame seared. I usually don’t like mackerel because it’s fishy but this was actually not fishy at all so that was a delightful surprise. There was also some lime in the middle of the rice so it was quite refreshing. This dish was my favourite out of everything that we ordered :)

The first time I came here I thought this was one of the best sushi places in Vancouver. After this time I think it’s just good. The roll quality during peak dinner rush is not as good. Service is still great. Had the Alaska, spicy salmon, crunch and shiro roll. The spicy salmon was the best but everything was just okay. Tried the black sesame ice cream. It was very different. Still love that they include pocky sticks with the bill.

Shiro’s got the best sashimi I’ve had so far. The service was amazing(my tea is always full). We ordered the hamachi, salmon and tuna sashimi. All of it was fresh and delicious. We also got the spider roll which gave us 12 pieces but it was really crispy, very light on the mayo. At the end we got pocky with the bill!

Great quality sushi and a nice alternative if the line at Toshi is too long for you. I’m a sucker for their Futomaki roll(huge 10 pieces), chopped scallop roll, and extremely fresh sashimi. I’m not usually a wasabi person but I love it here. Super fresh and high quality, none of that neon green clump you often get at other places. That’s why I’m okay with it being pricier than other sushi places. You’re paying for quality here. Pro-tip: Even better are the lunch combos, priced reasonably from $ 9.99-$ 13.50 and you can get a variety of options to try: tempura, teriyaki, rolls, sashimi, etc. I’m a fan of Combo G with the katsu don. A nice end to the meal is the complimentary package of pocky as dessert!
