It had been a long time since I had been in the comic collecting business. Few months back I jumped back on the bandwagon when one of my fave Nickelodeon series that had been cancelled for years was coming back in comic form. Jhonen Vasquez had been one of those artists whom I loved back in the day and his cartoon«Invader Zim» was being brought back as a comic series by Onipress. Score! Problem was my usual haunt LA Mood could find no info about it when I inquired so I decided to branch out. I knew about Heroes but it’s large stacks and tight quarters had always intimidated me. Plus I hardly had the ‘superhero’ cred to dare open the door and wander in over an obscure thing as Zim did I? Gathering up my nerd needs and my comic courage in I braved and found a whole new world. The shop keeper on duty knew exactly where to find the first issue of it and also turned me on to a nostalgic fave, Jem from IDW with art by the wonderful Sophie Campbell. I’ve been back every month for new issues of both ever since… though some months like last I skipped due to the low Canadian dollar and the comics being in USD price. My advice for comic lovers of any type, whether it be Walking Dead, Spiderman, Ghostbusters, Low, or even My Little Pony. the people at Heroes know their stuff. Check them out. PS. They also let me exchange a Jem when I got an alternative cover by accident of an issue I already had. Talk about customer service!

Heroes is the first place I stop when I’m looking for a new comic or a geeky present for a friend. They have lots of figurines, collectables, vintage toys, trading cards, card games, and tons of comics. There’s tons of stuff here so that means the store can get crowded very easily. The reason for my 3 star review is because the service there is a bit lacking. In the times I have visited, it was rare that someone asked if I need help, or even acknowledged that I was there. I went in to look for a particular Funko Pop Vinyl Figurine. There was tons to choose from and they were stacked 3 high and 3 deep on a shelf. I asked the person working if they had a certain character. They weren’t sure and said that if I wanted to find out, I would have to look through each toy. I was pretty disappointed that they didn’t help me out or anything, looking through all of the different boxes was a lot of work and in the crowded store, it was difficult to do. Heroes is a good store that I feel safe visiting and exploring but I sometimes wish I felt a bit more welcome.
