Meh. My special girl and I went here the other night, called to the promise of free wings with the purchase of a drink. We have never been here before, but were recomended by a woman we met in a grocery store. The drinks were, well drinks. My beer was cold enough, and my girlfriends cocktail was so-so, nothing too special. Then came the wings. I was promised hot wings, and while they were«hot» they didn’t seem very fresh. I felt like they had been cooked, and were sitting out for the past 2 hours, but kept warm. The décor was pretty modern(I like that style) lots of dark colors and some red. The music was terrible, and repetitive and annoying. We couldn’t even tell which song ended and which began. All in all, we didn’t dare order anything else, and hi-tailed it out of there. I won’t be rushing back anytime soon.

We found this place when we came up to Edmonton for the International Fringe Festival. We were staying at the Matrix(an EXCELLENT hotel by the way) and walked over to Social Modern from there on a Friday evening. Every Friday is «$ 3 everything Fridays» including premium liquor such as Innis & Gun beer(which you can’t buy in a liquor store for under $ 2.75 a bottle), mojitos, margaritas, highballs, They also do $ 6 doubles and martinis. Good cocktails and a great selection, excellent nachos, nice atmosphere, free parking, close to downtown and the college, cool light bulbs — Edison style; fun to stare at after many $ 3 drinks, but bad fish tacos — don’t try them; we took one bite and sent them back. My only warning is on $ 3 Fridays you typically get, club shots, but at $ 3 who cares?

What an awesome surprise and it’s walking distance from my place! The manager made a point of saying hi to us and was genuinely enthusiastic about the food and atmosphere. It was a little noisy because there was a speed dating function going on, but oh well. It’s a pub, not a library! We tried Bacon-Wrapped Bacon, which was as good as it sounds. It featured chunks of back bacon wrapped in side bacon, drizzled in maple syrup and baked until caramelized. Although I found the pieces a bit too large, they tasted ridiculously good. A big plate of sweet potato fries with tangy aioli followed. Unlike some sweet potato fries, these ones were crispy all the way through, and before we knew it, we’d polished off the works. I hardly had room for supper but managed to nibble on a Chicken Italiano sandwich(and took most of it home). This delectable concoction featured foccacia bread with juicy slices of chicken, bocconcini, proscuitto, tomato, and homemade pesto. It was lip-smacking.

My husband and I came here for dinner last week and we really enjoyed it. We split the spinach dip, poutine and he also had wings. The food was great and the portions were so large we couldn’t finish them. The service was friendly and attentive. If we were ever in the downtown area again I would definitely come here for dinner again.

Crazy daily specials. A group of us go every Tuesday. Ian and the staff have gone out of their way to accommodate our group trickling in and out. Close to downtown, located just behind Grand MacEwan Campus. Free parking! Free Wifi. The food is fantastic. The Kitchen Manager Paul Hoshowski has come up with some inventive and tasty creations for us. His«Bacon wrapped Bacon» and Pumpkin Spice Ice Cream are to die for! The only marginal complaint that I might have is the music — they have satellite music piped in but they tend to leave it on a really«pop» sounding channel. I highly recommend the Lamb Burger, the Pulled Pork and of course — the Bacon Wrapped Bacon!

I’m not sure how these guys do it but they really have everything. 1. Crazy daily food/drink specials that make me want to come back every day. 2. Hot servers/bartenders that are genuinely friendly. 3. Great interior and ambiance. 4. $ 3 all drinks special on Fridays?! 5. Lots of TV’s for sporting events. 6. Location is still close enough to downtown but far enough away that they don’t charge for parking! I hope that’s enough reasons to check out Social Modern but if it isn’t then maybe you’ll be lucky enough to drop by when they are hosting a speed dating event. The bar is big enough that there is still room even with the daters! I’ll see you there, try the food!

Wow, what an improvement over the Campus restaurant that used to be here! I definitely was drawn in by the promise of a free burger with drink purchase and while the burger wasn’t overly fantastic, it was FREE. Plus the fries are soooo good. I loved that the menu was different than most other pubs as well. A lot of things you wouldn’t normally see. Fairly good beer selection for such a small place. I fell in love with the Grunge Bucket and wish more places would do something this that! The service was amazing. The waitress would walk by every 15 minutes or so just to make sure we were doing good, didn’t need another drink, etc. Very, very impressed with the service! Overall, a decent place. I would like to go back to try some of the other things on the menu. Oh…one negative about this place: GETBETTERMUSIC! I am far more likely to stay at a place longer and therefore spend more if I DON’T have to listen to 15 Katy Perry songs.

What a weird name for a pub… That aside they offer free food on different days of the week! You do need to buy a drink to get the free food and there are few deals on drinks except for Fridays. There are also«under $ 10» lunch deals. Mondays: Free Steak Sandwiches. Small portion(5oz) and not a lot of friez. I went home and cooked a second dinner. The chef has an odd idea of how to cook steak. If you want a medium/well, order it well done. Tuesdays: Free ½ pound Burger Wednesdays: Free wings. 8 pretty standard choices. Thursdays: Free 8″ pizza. Choose from Hawaiian, Pepperoni & Mushroom, or Italian Sausage & Banana Peppers. Fridays: $ 3 everything(drinks). I can’t really see this being a happening place on the weekend at least for a while, mostly because of the location. If it wasn’t for the free food I probably wouldn’t go back. But… it’s free.

This place has nice décor, good food, and friendly staff, but I don’t really like the location. Ya, its really close to Grant Mac, but if you were to come here late night or after dark, I wouldn’t recommend walking down the street, more like straight to your car door and drive away immediately. Other than that, its a decent little place with good lunch deals(10 for under $ 10) and they also have a deal on Mondays after 4pm for a free steak sandwich if you buy a drink(not sure on the exact details of this one).

Unilocalers, I’m telling you that you’ve got to check out this bar, for a couple of reasons. One, it’s new and kind of hidden, so you’ll be totally in-the-know about a pub that many people haven’t heard of yet. Two, because it’s so new and little-known, it’s not super busy(yet). Three, it’s great! The first thing I really like in here is the décor. It’s got a cool, very modern red vibe. It’s got that welcoming kind of «anyone welcome» vibe and that kind of feel that it could host anything from a UFC night to a small jazz performance. I haven’t tried any food, but the drinks are cold and the staff are friendly!

Social is a hidden little pub north of Grant Mac campus… it’s the old«Campus Sports Bar» My wife and I went to Social for its grand opening and we have returned several times to check it out and have a drink. The owners clearly spent good money on making it a superb modern pub with a touch of class to it. This is a relatively new spot, and many new spots often have plenty of kinks to be worked out, but quite honestly the operation seems to be running very smoothly and the staff are very pleasant to deal with. This is a good spot in downtown Edmonton to go catch the Oilers game if you don’t have tickets to the real thing. I am certain Monday Night Football and CFL games are going to be fun to watch here when the season starts up again.
