Great Eggs Benedict with Schnitzel! Custom Mustard and Ketchup a must! Be hungry as portions are very generous.

I honestly didn’t find Barb and Ernie’s to be anything special. Their eggs bennie were overpriced and not that tasty. When it comes to brunch in Edmonton, you have so many options. I would recommend taking your brunch dollars elsewhere!

I’ve been here twice now. Once years ago when I was in Edmonton on a work trip, and they didn’t have a buffet. I think back then it was owned by Barb & Ernie still. Now I believe it’s owned by their son. I’ve been told a bajillion times I have to try them for Breakfast, however, I love German food so I’ve always gone for dinner. I took my mom there this evening for an early Mother’s Day dinner because she’s in Edmonton visiting(I’m living here temporarily for work), and we had the buffet. We were served soup to start, and it was Cream of Celery. Who knew that would be the best soup ever. It was so good I asked for a second bowl! I actually felt odd asking for a second bowl but our server(I believe the owner) assured me it was a great compliment as he’d made the soup. As we were finishing our meals he brought my mom and I each a to go container of soup too! Score! It was like he was reading my mind — I had been wondering if it would be odd to ask if they did to-go. haha. The staff is super friendly, the atmosphere is super casual, the food is delicious! :)

Been here twice now, both times gone for the German buffet. For the price you get alot alot of food, especially when its buffet! Lots of meat! Arrive hungry! Sauerkraut is good and other dishes remind me of living in Germany, so I’d call it authentic. Endless desserts as well, but in small portions so its fun to take all kinds and try them all. They have all my fav beers from Germany so it was too bad I don’t drink anymore. Service is friendly and again its a family business, so the owners and staff and very invested in the business. I really love the home made curry ketchup and mustard, took some home for my Dad at Christmas. The décor is a little old and cheesy but I like it, I feel its part of the charm of the place.

It is a bit of a strange place, considering the exterior of the building and the atmosphere inside,. The food was good, and all the staff were very friendly. If you’re looking for the biggest pancake in town, you’ll find it here.

Vile. Hadn’t been in probably a decade because the food largely sucked back then and has only become worse. Went with a group this morning(we didn’t choose the place) and barely touched my plate. Eggs Benedict with fruit arrived wrong to begin with(but no worries there) and it was corrected right away. Eggs were overlooked and puzzlingly almost devoid of yolks. English muffins were pretty much raw and had an overwhelming taste of raw flour. Ham was oversized and of poor quality. Hollandaise was unseasoned wallpaper paste. Fruit was unwashed. Will never go back. I’m so shocked to see this is always included in a list of places to go in Edmonton. It’s disgusting. That being said our service was great — this is food quality only.

One of the best place for eggs Benedict and German food. The bratwurst is amazing and they make this homemade mustard that is delish! I always have the original eggs Benny but they have many options available My husband always has the pancakes which he says are tasty. He gets the German pancakes. They are thinner than normal ones(almost like crepes but thicker). They also server erdinger German beer which is becoming one of our favourite beers. From Germany of course. Come early for there are lineups on the weekend.

Barb & Ernies is a cute family restaurant that looks like a german black forest house on the outside. It’s great for brunch with friends after a night out on weekends– as it offers a ton of options to soak up bad decisions from the night before. The potato pancakes are awesome! It WILL be busy but it’s a pretty large establishment so wait times have never been too bad for me. The last time I was here, I came in for breakfast with my family. There were a wide variety of people here from families to hungover students. It was packed as per usual but they were speedy and efficient. We all left stuffed and satisfied. This is an Edmonton favourite so I’m sure I’ll be back many more times!

Loved the traditional old school breakfast. The food was tasty, it came out fast considering how busy it was, and the staff was friendly.

My brother suggested this restaurant for breakfast. We were seated right away. Water and menu were provided shortly after being seated. After we placed our order, the food arrived soon after. I was impressed with the portion size! My bratwurst benny was enough to feed two people. The bratwurst was nicely seasoned. There was ample hollandaise sauce on the soft poached eggs. The hash was pan fried perfectly. The fruit was sweet. I really enjoyed the house made mustard with the bratwurst. Our server refilled coffee frequently and cleared plates once we were finished. The restaurant was clean albeit the décor very dated. The food made up for the ambiance. Overall, it was a very good meal. My only suggestion is that they add a half size option with their breakfast menu for small eaters.

I finally got to experience Barb & Ernie’s Restaurant after years of driving past it. It was good, but it wasn’t the experience I was expecting. Don’t get me wrong, the food was tasty for the most part, the service was efficient and it was an overall good experience, but I think the large amount of people who constantly told me that I had to go for the best eggs benedict in the city really created a high expectation that Barb & Ernie just couldn’t live up to. We were there at 9am Sunday, which was a great time to get in without any lineup. After 10am on a Sunday, you would definitely want to get a reservation or at least be prepared to wait outside for a table to open up. The menus were vast with lots of options. As a non-breakfast lover(yeah, I don’t know what’s wrong with me — I’d rather have a sandwich), I was still game for trying the eggs benedict. I also saw potato pancakes, which made me think of my mom, so I ordered one on the side as well. At $ 4.50, I was expecting a large mocha but it came out in the same white coffee mugs that everyone else at the table had. It was good, but it was small compared to what you would receive for that same cost at a café. The breakfast options ranged around $ 12 with some cheaper and some more expensive. The potato pancake was another $ 3. The Hubba Hubby ordered a side of sausage, which surprisingly, came out with 5 or 6 links — way more than I would have expected! The highlight of eggs benny for me is always the hollandaise and this one fell a little flat. I’m not sure if it needed more salt or maybe even some pepper, but it didn’t have the same pop that I was used to. The shredded potatoes that came on the side and the four strips of bacon, were fantastic though. The dish also came with two pieces of fruit but the melon was mushy and I’m pretty sure was past its prime. Lastly, nothing compares to Mom’s potato pancakes and these were as different from hers as could be but to each their own. I love how the restaurant’s story is laid out on the front of the menu, taking you back through time and sharing a glimpse into the people of Barb & Ernie’s. That was a really sweet touch. In Winnipeg there is this great German restaurant on Portage and from the outside, Barb & Ernie’s is very similar. Inside B&Es though, is nothing out of the ordinary; the interior is comfortable and clean but the cool, unique look from the outside doesn’t carry through inside. Overall it was okay but I can go a few more years before I go back.

I’ve driven by this place thousands of times and have always wanted to try it. Today was the day! We got there early to beat the church rush,(9 o’clock) so we were able to get a table right away. The food was amazing! I had the apple strudel crêpe, with 2 poached eggs and bacon with a side of sausage. The portion size was just right. The side of sausage came with 5, more than i was expecting. The apple strudel filing was huge, the hollandaise sauce was amazing. Service was exceptional, never had to wait for coffee refill, and everyone was helping each other out; not one person per section. Definelty my favourite breakfast place in the city. Have to try it for supper too. Will be back!

The eggs Benny were nice, the service was adequate and the coffee was great. I felt like the food was a little too greasy and there were literally only 3(I think) vegetarian options on the menu, and one of those was eggs Benny with sliced tomato only, and one was eggs Benny with fresh fruit ON it. I questioned that one, the waitress assured me that is what it was, I opted not to try it…

We took our grandparents here, who use to live in Germany. We all loved it! We went on a Friday morning, it was busy but we didn’t have to wait for a table. Our server(s) were all friendly and took care of us well. The décor is really outdated, it’s cute and cozy but it could certainly use some updates. Aside from that, the food is delicious! We were put off by the prices at first glance, however the portions are huge, so you will leave with a full belly! They do hollandaise sauce right, crepes were amazing! Try their ketchup and mustard if you order bratwurst, it is scrumptiooooous :) Will return many, many times.

Busy place! Our experience here had some hits and misses. The décor is tacky and out dated… but in a good way. There is a nice casual cozy feel to this place. In regards to the breakfast special«best breakfast in town»…you have lots of options to choose from. But the portions seemed slim. I had a sea food combo eggs Benny. I was impressed with the amount of shrimp, salmon and crab that it came with. The«white wine» sauce was a bit bland. I also found the hash browns boarder line raw. Did not like them. Service was great. There was a bit of a wait for our food but they were busy so it seemed reasonable. Then the last thing… the prices. They are a bit high! I really don’t feel it was all worth the price. That being said we will still give them another try to see what they offer for dinner

Nothing beats a family business! I love to support local breakfast restaurants and my favorite is breakfast food! I always come here for the enormous hotcakes that I can never finish by myself in one sitting, but I refuse to share. I rather pack it up for later when I crave for it again. Parking is a little difficult sometime because there’s limit space due to a lot car shops around. I usually try to go there right around when they open so I don’t have to fight for parking. They have a lot of different breakfast item to choice from(over 200 items) and the prices are very good for what you get. And it’s satisfying if you’re hungry a lot in the morning. They have homemade mustard and curry ketchup for sale if you want to take some home. This restaurant is so famous that I don’t know what more I can say to making more outstanding.

If you feel like big greasy breakfast with bratwurst sausages for a reasonable price-thats the place to go! Endless menu choices, eggs benny come with hollandaise sauce made from white wine which gives it an interesting taste. Service is fast even during busy weekend. I guess i didnt give them all 5 stars because of the very outdated décor.

What can we say about Barb and Ernie’s that hasn’t already been said? This place is an Edmonton icon when it comes to breakfast and brunch. I don’t know anyone in the city who hasn’t been here, waited in the sometimes crazy lineup for a basic, run of the mill breakfast on a Saturday or Sunday morning! While it isn’t my favourite place to go for mildly hungover fare on the weekend there is a certain appeal to this eatery! Can’t quite put my finger on it, but it’s there! The menu is simple and not too over whelming. Offering all of your traditional breakfast goodies and some German dishes for those who need a taste. I’ve been a fan of the meat combo myself, hard to pick between the choices! Why not have them all? They also have a plethora of eggs benedict to choose from. While I am not personally a fan, I can see why people line up like they do! Known to have the best in the city, from what I have heard! Service is always prompt and friendly! Now for the down falls… I miss Ernie! Since retiring Barb and Ernie don’t make appearances anymore. I miss his quick wit and friendly welcoming. This place is not fancy, not in the slightest! Teetering on the side of kitchy before is was trendy. Not a dive by any stretch but not fancy! The lineup can be a bit ridiculous! Be kind when you’re here and don’t camp out at your table :-)

This was the place that taught me that I actually love Eggs Benedict. You see, prior to this, I’d only had BAD Eggs Benedict. You know, the kind of food that is on par with bad airline food(in fact one of the first times I had Eggs Benedict was on an airplane — bad decision there). In fact, I mostly ignore the rest of their menu because although I love some of the other breakfast items(wait, they sell something other than breakfast here? I don’t believe it. Their breakfast is awesome!), their eggs benny is the best bar none of all the eggs benny I’ve had in years. The only downsides I find for the restaurant are location, being rather busy, and occasionally one other problem. Maybe the location’s a good thing for my health(if it were closer, I’d go all the time!). Being busy keeps them in business so that’s not too bad(and it’s worth the wait even if there IS a line out the door). But the other problem I’ve had is some discomfort with some of the leering of older men in the establishment. Now sure, I understand that a restaurant of this caliber ought to have some regulars, and some of them might be older men, but it’s almost an expected part of the experience as a reasonably young woman to have the occasional inappropriately friendly look and/or comment by the older men who are present. For this reason, I wouldn’t go here alone. Instead I go with a group and have a great time. I definitely recommend this place if you want a scrumptious breakfast with German touches in Edmonton!
