Tenen is a rather small restaurant in a sort of residential area but not too far from Royal Oak Skytrain Station. Eastern European-ish décor. Tight seat spacing. TVs and small bar make this also a sports bar. Staff still seem very inexperienced, but at least the food is good – Tasty comfort food at a very good price for portion. Strangely, they ran out of some menu items at around 7.30pm, including cabbage rolls and their breaded crêpe appetizer. Complimentary bread with your main — each person gets one large, flattish bun cut into two halves. DONOTEAT. If you do, you may not finish your main, depending on what you order and your appetite at the time. In any case, it is boring bread and there is no butter, spread, dip or anything to go with it. Save it for getting the last of any tasty sauce or stew from your main, or eat it later during your meal if you don’t think you will be full. Yes, the main can be that filling. Stuffed Pork Chop($ 17.95) boneless pork chop stuffed with prosciutto and cheese finished in gorgonzola mushroom sauce & served with mashed potato and grilled vegetables –Sizable chunk of pork(8 oz? 10 oz?). Pretty tasty, if simple. My pork felt a bit firm, though. –Also came with a bit of seasoned rice that was actually really tasty all on its own. –At basically $ 18 this is as filling as $ 18 dollars should be. Add on even half the allocated portion of bread and you could be in trouble. Chicken Roulade($ 16.95) chicken breast stuffed with spinach and cheese, wrapped in bacon. Served with horseradish mustard sauce, grilled vegetables, and fries –Surprisingly tender chicken white meat. –Looks like a long, fat, sausage maybe 8 inches long and a little over an inch thick. That’s quite a lot of meat, especially when it also comes with fries. –A bit on the salty side because of all that bacon. Sour Cherry Cream Pie($ 5.25) –Dessert of the day. Description from the server sounded and what came to the plate was very different. –Looked like filo rolls of sour cherries were laid in a cream cheese or custardy sort of mix. You get a slice of this, so it looks like yellow creamy stuff studded with sour cherries. –Served with whipped cream, a drizzle of chocolate, and cocoa powder. –Pretty tasty and okay-to-smallish portion for price. Definitely a very interesting dessert. Overall, ok to tasty comfort food at a great price if you are looking for a very filling meal. And your plate has a good ratio of meat to cheap filler. Points lost for not returning my phone call for reservations and not answering website e-mail about reservations.

Friendly family run service made for an enjoyable brunch despite the long wait for food. We came while there was a big lunch party that took up most of the room. Décor is pleasant, lots of things and photos on the wall that will be a welcome sight if you’ve never been to Europe(the eastern part) I came with my family so I tried a few things from the menu including: Marinated Chicken Thigh — this was moist and tender(albeit heavy on the cheese). Not the best chicken I’ve had but still decent. The chicken is served with a small handful of fries and coleslaw salad. Note the coleslaw is not your American heavy on the mayo version. Gourmet Burger — this was basically a 10oz patty. They say burger but there is no bun. It’s 10oz of meat, with a hearty dose of bacon and cheese mixed in. My brother had this and he said it was good but 10 oz of anything is a lot. Chicken Roulade — I ordered this for my mom but looking back, I should have got this instead. It was the best dish of the three. Chicken breast stuffed with spinach and cheese, then wrapped in crispy bacon. Oh my, this was a winner. I will definitely return, next time to try the Tenen Meat Platter because that dish looked amazing.

Wanted so badly to like this place, smaller out-of-the-way ethnic restaurants are normally my thing. It ended up being okay, but not more. Décor was promising but food was disappointing. Service on a quiet weeknight was very average. Roast lamb in yogurt was authentically garlicky, but too many corners were cut on the chicken«dumpling» soup(tasted like boiled freezer stuff) and the beet salad(slapdash iceberg and cukes with something the taste/texture of canned beets). Unlikely to be back.

Really happy that there’s something a little different in this area. Didn’t even feel like I was eating in Burnaby. To be honest, I haven’t really had the chance to try much of Eastern European dishes but I got a great introduction if anything. I got the Zlatiborski Goulash my partner got the Chicken Roulade. The goulash is a salty hearty dish, with sides of mashed potato and vegs. Extremely flavorful and so good on a cold chilly day. My partner loved the stuffed breaded bacon wrapped goodness, something I knew he would love when I first looked at the menu. Another thing, the bread that came with the meal. Oh my goodness. It didn’t need flavorful goulash to enjoy, it was good by itself too. When I asked it to be packed, the owner nicely gave some extra. Ambience, loved the décor, it was open and a way better decorated than the many asian places that were in the location before them. The restaurant was quite full and I felt that many of them perhaps knew each other? We noticed that many of them got the goulash, so definitely give it a try. Anyways, would come back to try the other dishes when I get the chance!

Great friendly service, delicious food, tastefully decorated clean space! Love it! New favourite place for healthy comfort food. I had Hunters Schnitzel, and my husband got Karadjordje’s Steak. My veal was very tender and mushroom sauce with veggies and bacon was perfectly cooked and seasoned just right. Mash potato is missing on my photo just because I asked not to plate it for me. My husband loved his steak too. It was very crispy on the outside and pork on the inside was tender, stuffed with cream cheese. Staff was friendly, inviting and accommodating. Couldn’t find a single negative thing about this restaurant. Will definitely come back!
