Almost 7 years ago, my girlfriend and I went on one of our first dates as highschool sweethearts to Metrotown(yes I know it sounds sad but as 16⁄17 year olds it was totally the coolest thing to do at that time haha) We just walked through and talked and somehow ended up at Crystal mall. It was my first time ever in the place but not hers… I was so out of place with all these random hello kitty plush bears everywhere and the T&T style market on the bottom but then I came across this gem in the food court. You see, I might be half Japanese but I was 20% in touch with my Asian side at the time having just discovered bubble tea(lmao this whole review is going to sound so corny) BUT100% obsessed with any kind of decent to great Japanese food and I thought trying this place out for lunch might be a good way for us to just sit and chat. It was one of our very first meals as a couple and I still remember it to this day. I ordered chicken wings and a chicken teriyaki combo and she ordered a prawn udon bowl. This was also the very first time I found out she was a pescatarian… after I asked if she wanted a chicken wing and she said«no thanks… I don’t eat meat»…NO!!! WHATTHEABSOLUTE F***!!! Anywayssss I digress lol. It’s been just under 7 years since our first time at this place and we’ve gone at least 20 times since and it’s always been very good. The family that runs it have stayed the same throughout the years and have always been so nice. The prices have gone up a bit over time obviously, but not enough to make us stop going here. The chicken teriyaki is great and their chicken wings are still really delicious I would add the takoyaki is pretty bomb and their cali rolls have always been great. I hope this place stays open for much longer but you never know with food courts, this would probably be the only restaurant that is from a food court that I would ever actually miss if it were to close.

*Based on the takoyaki alone* I’ve been to Osaka Japan, where Takoyaki is said to be the best in the world. I indulged, eating T-balls from street vendors, restos, food courts, etc., and loved them all. Since returning to Canada, it has been hard to find good takoyaki. Often I find takoyaki here is undercooked and doughy(sorry Richmond Night Market); not a pleasureable texture for t-lovers. WELL, my sis + posse were at the Crystal Mall food court and ordered a variety of things, she ordering takoyaki from Kasugas. It was… perfect. More than perfect. The best takoyaki I’ve ever had. Especially hot and crispy on the outside, perfectly cooked on the inside. Totally impressed. I guess now I don’t need to go to Osaka! ;)

Cheap and adequate food. Nigiri was very thin on top of the rice. Probably won’t come back.
