A place to get sugar high! All kinds of chocolate and lolly-related treats in one place. We always drop by after a visit to Woodside Cheese shop which is next door. The quality of the chocolate is pretty average and there’s nothing flash about this place but it makes up for it by the sheer variety of sweet goodies(and some nuts) that they stock. Tourists seem to love this place. Some help-yourself samples available at the payment counter.

This is such a great place to bring those tourists. and gives you a change to get some craft chokkies… :) They make a range of hard and soft candies, and as the name implies. CHOCOLATE. Mostly milk, in a range of flavours and many novelty items.

There are a million different kinds of chocolate, candies and nuts here, and you’re certain to find something to suit every taste, including gluten free and diabetic. This is definitely an impressive thing, because not everyone remembers that dietry requirements differ. So I take my hat off to Melba’s for that. I also take my hat off to them for giving me the incredible deliciousness that is the Thai sweet chilli cashews. Those things were heaven in my mouth, and now they’re all gone, I am sad. But I will get some more, oh yes, I shall. My friend bought enough chocolate to sink a battleship, proclaiming that making a decision was hard, so one of just about everything was a better idea. We were both impressed with the service and the prices, the staff were friendly, and most wonderful of all, thanks to the time of day we visited, we were the only ones in the shop! Other people turned up when we left, so I think we did very well indeed. Melba’s is an Adelaide institution, and with very good reason.

I think my absolute favourite thing about Melba’s Chocolate Factory is its location. And although it’s a little bit of a trek, it’s a good one. It also is the perfect whereabouts for a slight chocolate fieldtrip. Along side Melba’s there are cheese testing facilities, strawberry picking yards and of course a stop at Hahndorf Village on the way up. It calls for in all, an enjoyable outing. In terms of quality, Melba’s definitely holds no complaints, and although perhaps not a creamy as Haighs Chocolate, it still remains pretty damn good in its own unique way. So if you’re a chocolate enthusiast and also up for a slight trek, perhaps visit the Melba’s head quarters, and enjoy a beautiful day. Tip: Try the chocolate freckles. Mmmmm.

This working tourism factory is a sweet place in every sense of the word and is sure to delight young and old alike. Buying produce from here is a great way to show loved ones you care, or why not simply spoil yourself? Go on, you deserve it. TOPTREATS My faves include the good old fashioned one-inch Licorice Blocks, the delicious Sherbet Rimmers and the Sultana Chocs. My bloke loves Melba’s Rocky Road. You can also buy quirky produce, such as the chocolate Cow Pats range — old-school comedy gold. VIEWING Visitors can actually see the factory in action through the different production areas and the workers as they make the confectioneries. There are five different rooms: the Chocolate Room, Depositing Room, Packing Room, Panning Room and the Toffee Room. STAFFCHATS Friendly workers who operate the heritage equipment which makes the confectionery are happy to chat to visitors and answer any questions they might have. HISTORY Melba’s is housed in a in the heritage-listed former Southern Farmers Cheese Factory factory, which produced cheese from 1919 until the factory closed in 1977. It was left to languish until the burgeoning Melba’s breathed new life into it in 1990. There’s some fascinating antique memorabilia displayed on the walls of the factory.

Chocolate, YUM! If you’re planning a trip to the Adelaide Hills, you MUST go to Melba’s Chocolate Factory… unless you’re vegan of course, then I could understand the problem… With that out of that way, Melba’s is a piece of history with old school chocolate making equipment on display, you can have a look at how the chocolate is made. Occasionally you can also sample the goodies as well! There are so many different types of chocolate and goodies you WILL walk away with more than you thought you might. If you thought you were on a diet but would just go «for a look» well good luck with that, because it will definitely end up being more than just a look. I personally recommend the fudge that can be purchased behind the counter. It’s so soft & squishy… I feel like getting in my car and driving there right now actually. Even if you don’t like chocolate you’ll find something here for you. They also sell various types of candies as well as both hard and soft lollies, so it’s well worth the trip.
