Tastes awful. I’ve tried this place several times and it’s been disappointing on each occasion. I can get something cheaper and far better from Rice Workshop in the city.

Went here with my boyfriend as it is just close by our apartment. I cant remember the name of what I ordered but it was a bento box with a lot of fried food. Lol. ill explain. my order was with chicken karaage, chicken teriyaka and tempura(prawns, calamari and vegetables). The food i ordered was good, but I don’t know why i ordered so much fried food when i was at a sushi place. The chicken teriyaki was really good. I don’t usually like tempura as it is too oily but I ate the prawns(1 piece) and calamari(1 piece). My boyfriend got the salmon lovers bento box which had SOMUCHSALMON! From memory it was around $ 21. There were salmon roles, nigiri sushi and then sashimi. The quality of the salmon was good, and it tasted fresh(i just had a piece of everything on his plate). It is a little hole in the wall, nothing too fancy. It was quite packed actually. We just walked in on a Friday night, it is a casual spot to dine. Saw many different types of groups, families, dates, and groups of adults. I would come here again. It is nothing special, but when craving sushi, and its close by, then i would choose this place due to convenience.

Wanted to catch up with a friend who was sick so I made the trek from the city to this small japanese place across the street from his apartment to meet him. FOOD Both of us flipped to the back of the menu to take advantage of the lunch specials which are basically all the Donburi’s with miso soup. I chose the Ebi Don(deep fried King prawns) and my friend choose the Karage Chicken Don(being sick clearly does not stop unhealthy eating). I was expecting the prawns to have the crispy fried exterior but unforunately it came soggy. Initially I thought maybe it was the sauce on the rice or the egg that caused the the sogginess but I don’t think it could have made every part of the prawn that soggy. Overlooking this it tasted ok. Nothing fantastic but satisfactory. The portion sizes are decent so you definitely will be full by the time your done. VERDICT The place doesn’t really have a Japanese feel to it. Kinda has more of a local sandwich feel to it. I don’t think I’d go back to this place to satisfy any Japanese food cravings but I would consider going back if I was ever in the neighbourhood, lazy to walk to sushi samurai and in extremely hungry. Oh and Morgan C.‘s comment about the random broccoli. One piece of green to make you feel not so bad about eating a bowl full of fried food.

I tried to come to Hamachi-ya a few weeks back only to discover it closed at 2.30pm, so ended up trying somewhere else, which turned out to be a good find. However, today I decided to forgive them for their need for an afternoon nap and see what they had to offer. I decided to go with the salmon and avocado rolls($ 8.60) and the chicken karaage($ 8), thinking that would be a comfortably filling lunch. I wasn’t wrong! I’ve tended to find lately that sushi rolls were losing some of their diameter, however that wasn’t the case with these rolls. 8 pieces would have been enough for a normal meal, but seeing as I bought the karaage as well, I thought I better attempt it. I’m still eating it as I type! The salmon in the rolls was nice and fresh, which combined wonderfully with the avocado and the Japanese mayonnaise that I love so much. The karaage had(still has) a generous layer of fried chicken on top of lettuce and rice(and a random bit of brocoli) with a «healthy» layer of mayo-based dressing on top. Whatever it is, it’s good! The menu isn’t overly extensive, but I’ll definitely be heading back to try a few more bits from it!

Alot of people in my work love this place — I like but i don’t love… It’s good — so expect good… but it’s not great and since Sushi is my favourite food I do tend to have high standards when it comes to these things… It’s not like the foods not fresh — it is… I just find it to be maybe a little slightly expensive for its price range and there aren’t really any«major flavours» on the menu that are memorable. If you’re looking for«good value» they do have daily specials which can be good… but on average I feel like you’ll get average… i don’t mind popping here on occassion… but it’s not my «go to» sushi place…
