Thailicious, in James Street just past Lake, is a spacious place, with additional al fresco seating out front, and, as its name suggests, turns out Thai food. The menu covers the gamut of what we have come to expect of Thai places in and around Perth — the various salads which are a feature of that cuisine, as well as the expected red, green, massamun and panang curries, and of course the noodle based dishes. A mate and I lobbed in the other day for lunch — it is licenced although the range of wines is a bit limited — no Riesling or rosé but there was a bottle of Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris which appealed and we grabbed that; this is quite highly perfumed with apples and pears dominant, with some yeasty overtones. The palate is fresh and lively, with stone fruit and lemon flavours, finishing with a crisp and long finish. It is a good companion for spicy food. For food we began with a shared entrée, Prawn’s Paradise — four prawns wrapped in potato noodles and deep fried, served with a tangy mayo. They were lightly browned, covered in a crispy noodle blanket; the flesh was juicy and sweet; a good starter. We moved on to a couple of mains — green curry of seafood and a noodle dish, Pad Hokkien. The former, in a wide shallow bowl, consisted of prawns, fish pieces, squid, a solitary mussel which I snaffled, bamboo slices, green peas, sliced zucchini, chopped fresh red chilli, in a spicy, creamy coconut milk based broth. A few basil leaves scattered across added some aniseed tones. The seafood was well cooked, firm to the bite, and the vegetables also of good consistency. Spiced at a pleasantly zesty level it was a well turned out dish. The second dish, a plate of stir fried egg noodles, slippery and oily, had been cooked with a dousing of Hoisin sauce, a dash of sweet chilli, and included capsicum, ginger slices, and some lightly cooked crunchy broccoli. The Hoisin added sweet and salty flavours, while the sweet chilli a mildly zingy note; another pretty well executed dish, if nothing out of the ordinary. We finished with a banana roti — a folded flat bread fried with a mix of mashed banana, and dripped with condensed milk — very nice indeed, and with it a scoop of durian ice cream, richly creamy and sweet with that particular durian taste and aroma, which you either like or detest — I love it. Thailicious produces good quality, middle of the road Thai food in a friendly and welcoming environment. It is certainly worth a visit.

Pretty good all round. Good food. Good value. But, watch out for the minimum $ 30 spend for EFTPOS. Ridiculous.

Please do not give this restaurant your business! Take your time and money elsewhere! Myself and two friends came here for dinner on a Saturday night. They were incredibly busy and did not seem to be coping with the volume of people in the restaurant. We did expect to have to wait awhile for our meals, because they were so obviously run off their feet. The three of us were seated at a two person table outside. 30 mins after we were seated, our orders were taken; a nice simple order of 3 pad thai’s, no entrees or drinks. After waiting for about 45 mins we tried to get the attention of a wait person, all who conveniently ignored and walked right past us. When we did manage to get someones attention, we politely asked if our meals would be out soon. We were abruptly told«yes they’re coming». As the time went on we asked(nicely) 2 more times, and were given similar curt answers. After an hour and a half, two of the three meals finally hit our table. We assumed that the 3rd plate would be following closely behind. While waiting for the 3rd meal we became friendly with guests at a table next to us, who were also experiencing ridiculous delays and rude service. They commented on how late our 3rd meal was, and we all observed a table who arrived after both of ours, be served with drinks and mains. The people who we were talking to ended up leaving, as the whole thing was becoming quite ridiculous. It took 30 mins for the 3rd main to arrive. By this time the other two meals had gone completely cold. There were no apologies or explanations from the wait staff. The food was average, probably the same quality as a food court; definitely not worth such a long wait. We went to the counter to settle the bill, and told the lady that we were very disappointed with the whole experience, and asked for a discount. She was not at all interested in our point of view and continued to scream at us and make a scene in her restaurant(she made a point of telling us that she was the manager). She threatened to call the police, and grabbed my friend by the arm and tried to drag her behind the counter. This woman absolutely lost her s&*#. I have never seen such behaviour in a restaurant in my life. She was imitating us and carrying on like an immature adolescent. Other guests were staring in disbelief, while some potential new guests took this opportunity to leave. I would like to mention that I have never made a complaint to staff or restaurant owners, ever, and have always treated them with respect. I understand that wait staff have a tough job and have to deal with some difficult guests. Usually I would just not say anything, and not go back to that restaurant. However, we felt so strongly about the appalling service and general rude nature of the staff, that we just had to say something. This restaurant is anything but«Thailicious»

After being told of a 40 min wait for a table at S&T thai, my girlfiends and I checked Unilocal for another place to fill our thai craving close by. We were a bit apprehensive about Thalicious because of the name & it’s location right at the bum end of James street but decided we may as well give it a try. I was impressed, service was quick and friendly, food was fresh and huge servings. Prices were good, not as cheap as some of the surrounding restaurants in china town but pretty reasonable. I will be back :)

I popped in for dinner with a friend and shared 2 mains — 1 noodle and the other a green curry stirfry. The service is sweet and the servings are large. I do feel like there could have been a bit more flavour to the noodles but overall it was a nice meal at about $ 20 each. Not too sure if I would bother heading back for dinner but the lunch looks promising with many well priced deals.

I know the name is cheesy, but the food here is brilliant. In fact, it’s the best Thai I’ve had in the city. I’m particularly fond of their pad kee mao. So much so that I have a hard time going past it. The menu is extensive and the vegetarian options are plentiful. One of the things I love about this restaurant is that they listen to you when you tell them to make it really hot. I’m a chilli addict, and the thing that has frustrated me the most coming back to Perth after living in Asia for years is how hard it is to get restaurants to take you seriously when you ask them to make the food spicy. Thailicious listens. They once made me a spicy beef salad hot enough that I downed two bottles of chilled water, still went bright red in the face, was reduced to tears and had tingly lips for the next 20 minutes. In case you’re wondering, this rarely happens to me; I’m no chilli sissy. It was awesome! However, I now have a very healthy respect for Thailicious ‘hot’ and have only ever ordered medium since! On the down side, after oodles of visits, I am completely over the music which, while relaxing, is quite monotonous and always the same. Although the staff are lovely, there are sometimes language issues, especially if you call. Finally, I’ve heard complaints from people who’ve been served dishes very heavy in carrot and little else and, sadly, have actually once experienced this myself, which left me disgruntled as a) I dislike carrot and b) this is definitely not the norm! The food here is mouth-wateringly good and beautifully presented, which is why I keep coming back.

Three epic weekends ago, a group of my favorite Unilocalies decided we should meet up here on a Sunday noon for lunch. What started out as a simple meal turned into a glorious day of full-on progressive eating and drinking! WOOHOO! I’d always been a little skeptical about this place because the name of the restaurant is kinda cheezy. But I admit I was wrong to judge a restaurant by its name. The food turned out so good that 4 out of the 8 of us returned again for dinner. On that very same day! Our beautiful Thai princess, Cartoon N. ordered about 8 dishes for all of us to try(she was nice enough to order everything with no coriander, just for me). When the food was brought out, we were all digging in like we hadn’t eaten for days. The Tom Sapp(spicy pork rib soup) was the stand out for me and bursting with wondrous flavors. I think we all secretly wished we had ordered one each instead of having to share. The various Thai salads we tried were fresh, tasty and consisted of all these different ingredients, which I absolutely loved. I also particularly enjoyed the Mountain Wings, Nham Tok Beef and Grilled Pork Shoulder. I have to say that I wasn’t blown away by their Pad Thai — it was too wet and had too much ketchup for my liking. Pad See Ew tasted good but the noodles seemed to have been a teensy bit overcooked. As mentioned earlier, 4 of us somehow ended up back here for dinner that same night, and we of course HAD to order the Tom Sapp soup. Except this time, it was swimming with coriander! I think the waitress heard«no coriander» as «please put as much coriander as you possibly can to make Jamie gag and cry». So I spent the next hour and a half picking out every bit of hell from my food :0(On a happy note, the Duck Red Curry and Duck Salad made everything better. Definitely had my Thai food fix that day!

So maybe you’ve heard me pooh-pooh any(most) of the touristica places in Perth, including those along James Street in Northbridge. I might have uttered phrases like«trading on the location only»; «overpriced rubbish»; «shitty backpacker service» and even«don’t bother». Well, Unilocalers, I stand corrected. I am prepared to say SORRY and admit I am wrong. At least in regards to Thailicious, I am. If you can get over the fact it’s along ‘the strip’ and has a ridiculous name; if you are prepared to be amazed by the flavours and authenticity of the dishes, then this place is most definitely worth a look in. It didn’t hurt that my very good friend happens to be from Thailand and our little table of 8 deferred to her to order for us. She took us to Eastern Thailand, thus avoiding the usual fish-cakes-tom-yum-green-curry ensemble. Instead, we had tangy spicy glass noodle and papaya salads, a really incredible pork rib and champignon soup, some braised pork [that looked like liver, but it wasn’t!], chicken wings and a variety of other dishes that I probably wouldn’t have found myself, had I not had the expertise of a legitimate countrywoman. Every single one of them was delightful and at just the right spice level. Talking ceased as we devoured the food with gasps of delight and various oohs and aahs. Hell, we’ve even decided to have our joint birthday here next month! It was *that* good. It helps when you have a local to guide you, so take it from me, a different kind of local, when I steer you in the direction of Thailicious if you want reasonably priced, centrally located tasty Thai food to tempt your tastebuds. Tip: handy if you are going to see a movie at Paradiso. It’s only a couple of doors away. Make a night of it. Footnote: Unilocalers, I’m calling it. I am going all out to declare this the best authentic Thai in Perth City district**. Valid challenges and arguments accepted. Bring it oooonnn! **Balcatta Thai is not in the City district.

What a gem in Northbridge. I cannot believe i haven’t been to this place before. From a causal conversation with fellow Unilocaler Cartoon, lead us to having lunch on a beautiful Sunday arvo. Party of 8(including fellow Unilocalers Jamie, Just & Sylvia), sat down to a laughter-filled, tummy satisfied, taste buds tingling Thai lunch. It is simple restaurant, nothing really fancy about it but, the food is delicious & authentic. Yes the word is authentic. You have to try it to believe me. Every dish we ordered is bursting with flavours & all well balanced. I’m salivating just writing this review… As it was was my first time there, I let the expert Cartoon do the ordering while we patiently wait for the surprise. Oh yes we’re we surprised. Food just keep coming & boy were we satisfied. I think my favorite dish was the Tom sapp(spicy hot soup with pork ribs) omg it’s a to die for soup. The perfecf balanced of flavours that hot, spicy & sour. Very different to the tom yum goong you would normally have. Bathroom tugged away right to the back of the restaurant. Nice & clean. Just the way I like it. Highly recommended to those seeking authentic Thai food in Northbridge. I would definitely be back & of course bring everyone else with me. 2 thumbs up. Thank you Thailicious for a unforgettable meal. Kudos to your chefs & wait staffs.

Although the name of the restaurant may put you off the food will make up for it. The service staff were really quick in getting our order and our food and drinks were all brought out together, no waiting around for everyone to get their meals in dribs and drabs. The was heaps of huge 10L dusty empty bottles of champagne: must have been quite the party back in the day… We had a cosy booth seat but had to sit forward because the table was too narrow. First time I’ve had coconut rice before and I’ll never go back to boring ol steamed rice. I would definitely back back again

I don’t know how long this establishment has been in the area, but I’m surprised that they’re not on Unilocal! We stumbled across this gem by accident while we were hunting for Indonesian and Malaysian food. What a pleasant accident! Parking was so easy too as it is situated quite at the end of James st. True Thai hospitality, we were welcomed with warm smiles and were shown to our table. Knowing how big food portions are in Australia, I ordered chicken Thai fried rice(specifically requested for very spicy) so i can have some to go. It was so delicious and they were really generous with the chicken! My friend ordered som tam(papaya salad) that came with roasted chicken(nyum!) and thai sticky rice. Very unique and authentic. Oh, one thing that I was excited about is that we could order fresh juice by jug! Try out this place. The restaurant is very proper as well, good dine-in experience.
