I will start this review with a disclaimer that I am a huge fan of Ashtanga style yoga and have practised everything from a very gentle hatha to the strict regimen of Bikram. I am not a yogi or a teacher but I do have a very particular type of yoga that I enjoy. I did the intro pass for New Farm Power Yoga and overall it was not my cup of tea. I really am not into the whole 60 minute power vinyasa flow. I do not think that yoga and power should be in the same sentence when describing the style. I like to be able to properly align in the poses and not rush through trying to build up an aerobic sweat. I enjoy powerful yoga like ashtanga where you are holding poses and working on toning your muscles in the proper alignment and postures. I felt that the majority of the classes here are all focused on the power class where you are in and out and you arent actually improving your postures but are getting a fitness workout. So with that being said, if you are looking for a solid workout, you will find it here. The Ashtanga instructor as well as the YIN instructor however were amazing. They impressed me with their knowledge and their attention to detail and being able to tell you about a micro adjustment that would allow you to go deeper into your posture.

Being one of those«creative types» I often find myself getting side tracked, going on tangents and just being off with the fairies in general. Every so often when I feel like regaining some clarity and some balance I go along to a yoga class. Finding a great yoga studio to suit you can be a trying task, so with a new year in tow and a serious need for some detox action after all the food and booze consumed after the silly season, I went to check out a beginners class at New Farm Power Yoga. The first thing I noticed at the studio was that the room was hot! Not Bikram hot, or even hot yoga hot, just abnormally warm. This became more evident throughout the class as I proceeded to become Sweaty Betty during sun salutations. Aaron was the instructor who took the class and he was fantastic. Often I find that instructors explain movements and positions that are difficult to understand but he was clear and communicative throughout the class, which is great for someone who doesn’t have a huge amount of yoga experience. The class went for an hour and by the end of it I’d felt like I’d run a half marathon. Be aware that even the beginners classes require a decent level of fitness! I must say(despite not being a frequent yoga goer) that this class was fantastic! It challenged be enough to want to come back and the studio itself is intimate and welcoming without being claustrophobic. With everything from casual class rates to monthly and annual memberships, I would highly recommend New Farm Power Yoga to anyone who is looking to give that form of exercise a go.
