The staff are very friendly. Very welcoming and hospitable! Our second time here in as many days– both times our food was excellent with reasonable prices. We would recommend their banquet selection and also the lamb kebabs! It wasn’t overly busy and it was easy to get a table– great! Would we return– yes! Looking forward to the next trip to Melbourne to visit this place again. Keep up the good work guys :)

We needed a place for dinner that was on the city, halal, vegetarian options and served alcohol. Gaylords was our only option. The service was good, they were very accommodating. Also the price is pretty good too. The food is average. In short if you need a place that fits the criteria we had on the night then it’s a good option, other than that I am not rushing to go back.

Best naan in Melbourne! Food is great and service is brisk and efficient. The restaurant is clean although the size and layout feels a little daunting. Overall a good experience and we recommend getting your next curry here!

The most difficult reviews are those which are negative. The reason why is post such a meal, you sit there trying to find some ‘good’ in the experience. As a Unilocaler, it, must be conveyed that this was probably the most unfavorable meal I have had here in Melbourne. Despite some good feedback from a co-worker, my partner and I made the journey to Gaylord’s. The first impression was an issue. One poor fella running around like a chicken with his head cut off trying to service folks. The second red light was the ‘ranch buffet’ on the side wall. Yes, they did say that they had ala carte which we were looking for and we stayed. We ordered samosas as an appetizer. Now those who eat samosas know they should be crispy and hot through and through. These were cold in the centre and were double fried… that’s right, fried earlier, frozen and fried when we ordered them. Not good. We also ordered some butter chicken, two different dahls, rice, and rotis. We requested the rotis plain but they came with ghee or butter… hmmm. The dahls were watered down — almost if you were to ensure you were trying to extend the use of the same product. Too watery and absolutely no flavor. The butter chicken was similar… thin sauce and no substance. Finally, the ‘kitchen’ was near us and I heard no cooking(other Indian restaurants you hear pans rattling and see smoke coming from the kitchen). I then made the assumption that they are warming up items as they were ordered — quite disappointing. All and all, a bad experience. I can only say that I will not return. Despite my great expectations, Gaylord’s did not satisfy my desired expectations.

Food was yummy… service was horrific! I would have rather had take-away! Décor was ugly and the lights are at full… absolutely no ambiance. Go here if you want to feel like you’re at a theme park…

Quirkiness only begins with the name of this place. Stepping in late and alone on a Wednesday night I was ushered into a startlingly large and kitschy edifice to be seated amongst tables of avidly dating couples. Soft sitar music played as I informed the astonished waiter that I would not be having red wine tonight and I would simply like a single curry, yes, without rice or naan. Complimentary papadums kept coming, and my water glass was never empty for the slightest moment. A brief pause elapsed before I received a reasonable portion of Chicken Saagwala and a slightly food-encrusted dinner plate. Opting to eat out of the serving chalice while reading my book must have been perplexing to the staff. The food itself was tasty and fresh with just the right amount of spice for me(mild/medium), and my figurative dessert was the discovery and acquisition of a free English language Bollywood magazine on the way out.

After making a telephone order for takeaway and being met with sighs and reluctance(for a simple butter chicken with rice and garlic naan, 6:30pm, Sunday, quite dead upon arrival) my initial impressions of Gaylord weren’t overwhelmingly positive. However the service was quick(about 10 mins from calling to ready) and my order came with complimentary papadums and smelled amazing to my hungry belly. However getting it home(a 15 min walk) the naan was sogged through, courtesy of it’s al-foil wrapping, and the butter chicken(asked for super-spicy/Indian hot) was definitely on the mild side and the take-away container was just barely over half full — nowhere near enough to induce the curry-coma you’d want on a murky Sunday evening when you have a freshly tumble-dried woolen jumper and nowhere to go. Flavour-wise though, the butter chicken(although not spicy) was quite delicious — just a pity it was a teeny serve. I’ll give it another crack in case it was an off day service/spice/portion-size wise and report back.

I have a rug with the exact same texture and pattern as the wall coverings here.

Not bad but also not my favourite cheap Indian haunt in the city — there are just places with better décor and a feeling of windows! Great for big groups though(and for activities like team bonding over food).

Not appearing to be much from the outside, Gaylord’s is one of those restaurants whereby upon entering you are not quite sure if the next day you’ll be in a world of hurt if you know what I mean… The décor leaves much to be desired and there is no real order to the service its just take a seat a wait to be served. I wouldn’t rate them highly on hygiene levels but its bearable compared to some of the other restaurants’ in the city that I have experienced. One thing that it does offer is space and loads off it! Which can be quite refreshing and hard to come by especially in the CBD. They make fantastic dal & lentil dishes and the Masala Kulcha, nann bread stuffed with cottage cheese and sultana’s was amazing. I visited Gaylord’s with a friend of mine who is of an Indian background and even she was surprised with just how good the food was, good enough for us to return.

Yeah, I know. It’s a stupid name(although possibly a spot of marketing brilliance). But there’s precious little decent curry in the CBD, and Gaylord indubitably qualifies. It’s not amazing, but they do have a pretty good line on your traditional curry dishes, your naans and daahl and the like. Good range of vegetarian options, too

There is a saying«eat where the locals eat», I don’t know if this saying applies to Melbourne as there is such a diversity of locals how do you know if they are locals. The saying should be adopted for Melbourne to be «eat where the locals from the origin of the restaurant eat». As this saying has proven successful to me in the past I am recommending that Gaylord’s satisfies the above requirements and should be eaten at. When I came here for the first time it was with some of my Indian friends. They ordered for me this potato dish which to this day I have not been able to find again and it’s driving me nuts. It was amazing and I have looked at menus in Indian restaurants all over the world but this dish I cannot find. Maybe it was the sweet Malai Koftas in a nut curry, I don’t think I’ll ever know.

Gaylord’s is so stupendously tacky and over the top I can’t help but love it. Why, you ask? The unfortunate name and garish décor are obvious reasons, but Gaylord has a lot more to it than that… For example, sometimes there’s a non-Indian sitar player who performs while listening to his iPod. Then there is the cocktail menu, which is so 1989 it was probably lifted straight from the Weekend at Bernie’s wrap party. And if cocktails aren’t your thing(although I find it impossible to believe anyone could not want an illusion shaker with their vindaloo) then Gaylord have the world’s worst value carafes of wine, not because they’re expensive, just because they’re undrinkable. The food is pretty good, but really, that’s not what Gaylord is about. It’s about the psychedelic walls after a few too many post-work drinks, and the fact that the restaurant is so full of quirks you’ll never run out of conversation. Fun times.

Mirrored ceilings and disco balls are not the typical adornment for an Indian restaurant but this may be appropriate as the food always puts on a party in my mouth. Half imperial restaurant half 70s disco this confused laneway eatery serves up reasonably priced, delicious Indian food. Gaylords has a relaxed atmosphere, BYO and… space?! Space is not a commodity you realise you’ve missed until you patron an inner city restaurant that allows you to open a menu without knocking elbows with the diner next to you. And napkins! They have LINEN napkins! Ok maybe I eat at too many small dives but the service to price ratio at Gaylords is quite favourable. The usual suspects, butter chicken, samosas, tandoori chicken are all definite thumbs up with a special mention going to the lamb saag. The bright green spinach based dish was easily mopped up with garlic naan. Two mains, an entrée, rice and naan bread should easily feed three people($ 15-$ 20pp) making this an attractive alternative to the surrounding restaurants.

Now, we all know the name makes us giggle a bit but name aside ‘Gaylord’ is indeed a hidden gem. Located in an lane way off Little Bourke Street, ‘Tattersalls Lane’ offers some great options for food and beverages but the food at Gaylord is too good to pass up. A main meal can set you back around $ 15 — $ 20, but the portions are quite large and delectable. The service is quick and prompt and they can cater quite well to large groups. I usually indulge in the Navratan Korma(Vegetarian Curry), which is always a delight for the taste buds and is one of the cheaper items on the menu. Even for a local, the venue is a bit difficult to find at times(is it off that cross street, or the next one?)
