Manager was rude and yelled at me to get out for just asking to buy another cake. She said to be greedy elsewhere. Never going back

A great little bakery, always seems to be busy. Their pies are to die for and their service is always polite and friendly, albeit often slow. Some in store seating though the staff pay little attention to keeping it clean. Definitely a great recommendation for their great tasting, well priced food.

No stars from me ! We are lucky to have lovely bakeries where we live but on the recommendation of a friend I decided to visit the Village Baker to get a birthday cake for my daughters birthday and a family gathering that night. I bought a chocolate raspberry cake($ 32) as the very enthusiastic shop assistant assured me it was the most popular birthday cake they sell. Well, to say it was terrible was an understatement ! The family unanimously agreed it was the WORSTCAKE we had ever had in our lives !! It was a dense cement like cake(like a stale $ 4 Woolworths mud cake, only worse as it was dry) which was pretty much inedible. It tasted as though it was baked a week ago then kept in a fridge. It was a thick, dry cake with NO raspberries except for a few(3 or 4) tiny pieces that we could find in the whole cake. It definitely had no raspberry flavour either. I was very disappointed and called the bakery today to tell them. Needless to say the baker found it unbelievable to hear such a comment but you’ve lost a customer in us and anyone else I can tell also .If it was convenient today, I would return all the uneaten cake and get my money back but time doesn’t allow.

Not sure what is happening here, I’ve eaten here many times but the last few visits have not been encouraging a return. The last time I was here I received the wrong food and they forgot the sauce with my pie, a fairly common thing at most bakeries. The next visit, today, which was reluctant because of the last visit resulted in much the same frustration, wrong food but the sauce was there this time. The staff are friendly and attentive when you arrive but they either don’t listen properly when you place your order or they don’t take enough care when taking food items out of the heated cabinet. Both of these visits were a week apart, reluctant to come back and I won’t order if I do in case the staff and their selective hearing kicks in again.

The stuff is pretty good here. In a shopping centre where you struggle to not feel sick by the same overpriced names popping up it is nice to see that the foods section is still pretty chipper. Surprisingly things weren’t all that overpriced either. $ 7 for a variety of wraps and $ 5.90 for sourdough olive and herb bread are what I would expect to pay at most places that offer sourdough breads. Although they are a bit of the rage at the moment it doesn’t mean you can’t still buy them. They even have a sourdough baguette, something I hadn’t come across previously.

I’m afraid I have to disagree about how great this bakery is. Their sweet goods are definitely delicious, but no more special than the standard fare of any good bakery. In terms of savoury food, when I was there in an early afternoon, they had sold out of most of their pies(especially the award winning ones) and had no more in the oven. They were out of cold rolls, so I ordered the $ 7.50 special of quiche with salad. I envisioned a slice of one of the tasty looking quiches in the front display. I kept envisioning, for about 20 minutes while I read one of their many magazines on hand, until I finally caught a passing waitress and asked her if my order was coming. She flapped for a minute to try to find it, then brought me a single, small quiche on a plate. I mentioned that I’d ordered it with salad, so she returned with some salad on the side. I was seriously underwhelmed. The quiche was tasty enough, but again, nothing at all special, and rather undersized. The salad was tasteless and wilted. Following the reviews from here, I had high hopes for the Village Baker. I should have stuck with the sweets.

This place has truly amazing bread. If you’re a bread snob like myself and don’t eat that soft, artificial tasting sandwich bread, the Village Baker is where you have to go. They sell great sourdoughs but with prices at around 4 – 5 bucks per loaf, it’s probably not where I would go a few times a week. The danish pastries are also pretty amazing, with the dough being light and fluffy and not too sweet. Definitely one of the few great bakeries around, however not exactly cheap.

I challenge anyone to find better pies in Adelaide. Hot damn, if you can find a better pie than their chunky lamb and rosemary package of pastry GENIUS, then you sir, are a better man than me. Even Karl Stefanovic flipped out over these pies(video: ). The Village Baker is a typical sort of bakery. You’ve got all your essentials. Breads, cakes, donuts, doughy pizzas, sandwiches and pastry bits’n’pieces. It’s all pretty basic, but it’s done to an absolute t. They know their stuff and have awards pasted all over the shop to prove it. They do a good cup of coffee as well, and it’s well worth a sit down in the café to gorge yourself on their baked delights. There’s another baker in Burnside Village, Swiss Glory, and they’re quite popular as evidenced by their numerous outlets all over Adelaide, but nothing they have compares to what you’ll pick up in the Village Baker.
