If you like your peas smashed in the morning, then take them out for a big night before or head to this little converted garage space in The Valley and have them with mint and fetta on sourdough for breakfast. The coffee here is also straight up, no messing about damn good perky jerky stuff and because they are small it is easy to convince yourself to start your morning with two. Across the road, also called Rabbit Hole Café, is their co-working office, training and power meeting space. It is ridiculously cheap to hire a desk(think $ 10 a day) with internet, a concierge(the chick from across the road) and pleather chairs that swallow you whole. Set up shop, and eat, meet, drink your way through a working day trip or two to Brisbane.

Rabbit Hole is exactly that* — a lovely little place to fall into and emerge hours later caffeinated, productive, full, and genuinely happy. Looking for a spot to conduct a group meeting or training session? A place to power through a pile of emails in between meetings? A coffee not quite in the city and not quite in the valley? A quiet desk space with solid wifi and other creatives close at hand? A piping hot waffle to cheer up your Friday? Fall in here immediately. *as in the adventure-into-the-unknown way, not the psychedelic experience way, Alice.

I hate going to other cities and finding rad stuff that I wish my city had. Like, this place. Just, ugh. Little shoebox café in a quiet backstreet overlooking Fortitude Valley, kinda feels like Russian Hill in San Fran, the same kinda coloured weatherboard vibe, and it pumps out A-grade coffee and sandwiches and great little bacon & egg rolls on sweet brioche and then, right across the street, is a house masquerading as a co-working space slash meeting rooms slash seminar get-together rumpus room thing that’s like $ 10 a day to work from — that’s pre-WW2 prices, people, how do these guys stay in business? And how do more people not know about this double-joint? It’s all win from where I am. Which is Sydney. Which needs this kinda place as an antithesis to the big boys who charge $ 50/day.

Waffle Fridays from The Iron Ladies. By George, I think I’ve found my new office. Some may remember The Rabbit Hole from their first home in West End(where Box Vintage is now) but I have to say: there’s something about their new space on Agnes Street that is more«Rabbit Hole» than it ever was. It feels settled here. It feels like home. Amongst the exposed brick you can feel comfortable idling away the day sipping coffee or a chocolate and coffee frappé(I highly recommend this!). There’s a letter press studio in the adjoining space and they’ll soon have a co-working space with hot desks set up. Sans Fridays when The Iron Ladies peddle their waffled ways, there’s no food at Rabbit Hole. Yet. They’re working on it and I hear talk of salads and what not starting on the menu. If you’re a café floater this is a must-visit. It’s tucked away from the main hustle of The Valley and is such a peaceful place to plot and plan big ideas. I’m not one who works in cafes easily but here I can feel productive and have a good chat to the owners.

Rabbit Hole is especially good for those who can work from a laptop. If you work from home, you’ll be glad to know that Rabbit Hole have workspaces at the back of the café you can hire out. Rabbit Hole is a great place to come when you need to take the laptop on an excursion for the sake of not being in environs that inspire you to procrastinate.(I’ve got it! Let’s make cookies instead of writing an assignment, we’ve got choc chips and everything!). You can work and have coffee, tea, and little snacks brought to you.(No! You WILLNOT get up to make another cup of tea– do your work). It’s all part of the service. I can’t judge the coffee yet– they ran out of their regular beans today and were using Blackstar as backup. The service is prompt, but casual in manner. You will always have a full bottle of water on your table and your glasses will be full. The only criticism is that the café is quite noisy, especially when the front door is closed. They grind to order and so you will have your conversations interrupted by intermittent«ZZZZGRRZZZGRRZZZZZGRZZ». It seems like the baristas like to make coffee loudly too. I don’t know if it was just me, but I did think to myself«do you really need to smash that jug down so aggressively?». The workshop spaces are blocked off in the back and are quiet enough to work without hearing distractions. Being someone who works from home, I will definitely be hitting up Rabbit Hole more often. I don’t mind paying for the experience of having someone bring me a calming pot of tea while I work towards my rapidly approaching deadline.

With so many trendy, beautifully fitted-out cafes existing in West End, creating a café space that is unique and different from the rest is no mean feat. But, The Rabbit Hole have managed the task pretty well. They have created a light and airy space with some nice little nooks in it, including a narrow passageway running up the side of the café, leading to a small backyard that is in the process of being revamped to accommodate café seating. I went in there in it’s few couple of weeks of operation and staff were friendly and eager to tell me about their project. The coffee was as good as any that I’ve had in West End and was served with a gingerbread biscuit in the shape of a letter, a lovely touch that does set The Rabbit Hole apart from other establishments. That may have been something they were doing only as an opening special, but I hope it continues, as it would definitely keep me coming back!

I was walking down Vulture Street yesterday in desperate need of a coffee in an air-conditioned space to escape from the intense Brisbane heat, when I stumbled across the relatively new Rabbit Hole Ideation Café. Delighted, I stepped inside, ordered my coffee and took a seat in the café section at the front of the space and started to actually notice what as around me. Rabbit Hole is not just a mere coffee stop people(even though the coffee is quite good I must say). It’s also a creative hub. A meeting place for people who need somewhere with wi-fi, caffeine and work spaces which are available to hire. At the back of the space there is a boardroom, and there’s bookshelves with magazines and books to help you waste a morning over a cup of coffee. On the blackboard near the door there’s also some simple, but delicious sounding food options as well. What a fantastic idea! With Brisbane’s creative scene very close to boiling point, it’s only right that there be a place where creative types can come and talk shop, without having a space of their own to do so. I’m a huge fan of the Rabbit Hole concept and will seriously consider hiring work spaces for university group assignments or future creative projects. The space has a great vibe to it and the people who work there are obviously very passionate about the Rabbit Hole experience. Get creating my pretties!

I’m trying to avoid any references to Alice in Wonderland here, but the Rabbit Hole café IS like slipping into altogether better world. Not content to be a mere café Rabbit Hole has a unique selling point of offering workspace’s to rent as well as selling delicious beverages. Far from the seedy internet cafes of yesteryear the Rabbit hole has clean and modern décor and offers a load of services for hire : Internet, books, computers, lockers to store your possessions AND a chance to rent work stations (semi-permanent and long term options available) You have no excuses now, rent a desk and pen that novel Hemingway!
