I was greeted by a female member of staff who was obviously from Dublin. The deli is great here with hot food & a sandwich bar — it literally was a mini O’Briens Sandwich Bar. After ordering a coffee & sandwich I took my seat among the Irish working men who(as in Ireland) sit at different tables so they can spread their newspapers all across the table & shout across to each other about what’s going on in the news & tasks for the day ahead. After hearing about the Irish Government asking Dunne Stores to come to the table in talks to divert a strike with staff & listening to the great Dublin band Aslan sing Crazy World, because they stream live from Q102fm(Dublin radio station) I felt like I could have been sitting in O’Briens Sandwich Bar in Naas, Co Kildare with my brother — it was like a little piece of Ireland right here in Perth. The coffee & sandwich were lovely but the atmosphere did it for me. I will definitely be back at lunchtime one of these days.

Had the full Irish breakfast thinking it was all on a roll but it is not. Food was great but the enthusiasm of the staff was even better. Will go back if I’m in Perth again!

Right next to my bus stop, I stuck my head in this morning and asked about closing time and specials, promising I’d be back for dinner. I was, as the man said, a woman of my word. Coming into winter, working a long day and having an unwell husband all set the perfect stage for ‘home-cooked’ takeaway dinner. I had a choice of four different stews: beef and Guinness, Irish lamb stew, a chicken stew, or coddle(a pork sausage stew). Alternatively, I could go with chicken curry and chips or some gorgeous looking homemade pies and chips. Sorry, He had me at lamb stew with soda bread. For $ 12.50, the serve was big enough for at least two meals. Filled with chunks of lamb that melt in your mouth, perfectly spiced and flavoured with big olé bay leaves, it was just what the doctor ordered. And the soda bread… Just yum. Served by the man himself with a jovial, authentic Irish accent, it was a great way to round off a long day. Go.

Coming from an Irish man I can say the food here is legit. The curry sauce is just like home and the bread is amazing. Brian is very friendly and made a special meal for my little guy. Try the coddle, true Irish peasant food at its best!

Every Irish person in Perth complains about the lack of good sandwich delis and vows to ‘make a fortune’ by setting one up. Well thankfully one man isn’t just all talk, and that man’s name is Mooney. Although it only opened in June of this year Mooney’s Irish Sandwich Bar already has a loyal customer base and more people making the pilgrimage there everyday. There are even rumours floating around of queues out the door and down the road for breakfast rolls! They sell such wonderful and homely delights as roast chicken and stuffing rolls(in proper bread rolls, you know what I mean), breakfast rolls, Snax, Tayto, Chipsticks, Snack bars, and the holy grail — cans of Club Orange and Club Rock Shandy! They also have a small but tasty cold counter for making up rolls like Cetra or Spar, with all the old reliables like coleslaw, potato salad, onion, chicken, ham… all that good stuff. Although there’s only a handful of tables for eating in, it’s an absolute pleasure to have a sit down, listen to the accents coming in and out(the best is listening to Irish people convince their Australian dining partners that gravy and stuffing is nice in a sandwich), and more than likely meet Mooney himself, who is an absolute gent. I was here on my lunch break recently and he gave me a free Purple Snack ‘as a thank you’ for eating in his sandwich bar. Thank you, Mooney, for actually doing what we all say we’re going to do.
