Duffy’s is my favourite supermarket in this area, which is quite an achievement as there are lots to choose from. I guess being the closest to home(by at least 50m) does help… They lose a star for the non-recyclable plastic and polystyrene trays that all the reasonably-priced fruit and veg is wrapped up in. This frequently turns me off buying the $ 2 tray of bananas or the $ 3 of avocados.

This little supermarket in Oxford Square is pretty scruffy looking but surprisingly good. It has the best fruit and veg section in the neighbourhood — not huge but really fresh and much cheaper and nicer than the IGA. There is also a high chance they’ll stock whatever random cooks ingredient you need — proper gelatine, coconut flour, maple butter… Meat and cheese are not great here, you’re better off heading up to Bourke St to the fancy butcher and cheese shop if you’re feeling rich, or the Woolworths there if you are a regular human. The staff are nice but not terribly helpful. Altogether Duffys is a great local to have round the corner.

So this is my go-to supermarket … it’s less than 3 minutes away on foot. Opened late(midnight every night) and has pretty good prices! What’s not to love? Also love that they take EFTPOS minimum $ 2. What’s NOT to love … hmmm not the biggest selection of produce. It’s pretty reasonable though. If you want super cheap, you go to Paddy’s market or chinatown. But it’s not terrible here … sometimes they’ll have mangos or something on sale. Or a dozen eggs for $ 2.40(ridiculous i tell you!). But sometimes their milk and cheese selection isn’t all that fresh(i bought a bag of rotten cheese without realizing it until i got home) and even though it SEEMS like it’s cheaper than IGA next door? This is not always the case(the meat aisle in IGA can be a surprise!). Also, they don’t have the biggest variety of stuff. But when you live next door and on a budget, who’s complaining?

So my attempt at being a ‘gym person’ lasted all of three months, but my newfound addiction to the lolly, dried fruit and nut section of the nearby supermarket has certainly endured… Yes, I joined Darlinghurst Fitness First, and yes, I failed miserably. But, the best part about heading to the gym was ducking into Duffy’s Supermarket afterwards. Or sometimes before, because, you know, I really needed the sugar from those liquorice allsorts and chocolate-coated macadamias to give me energy… They’ve got a great selection of tubs for snacking on(perfect for work or the walk home), plus good pre-cut mixes for soups, salads and stir-fries. You’ll also find all the usual supermarket goods and a great selection of fruit and vegies.
