Meat and wine selection was brilliant but the service was outstanding! Staff actually interested to talk to us, explain the different cuts and styles, and when I expressed interest in the dry aged steak, she produced a page with references to books on the subject. Talk about feeling special! Well done guys on superb food, wine and service!

Expensive, had better steak @ cheaper restaurants. However nice atmosphere, good for a date.

Amazing steak, excellent service, and perfect décor. A great birthday dinner celebrated with my beautiful lady. Start your night at the lounge, with its red leather décor and impressive atrium ceiling, then make your way to the restaurant, with its ambient lighting and dark finishes, and enjoy all they have to offer. This is one of the better restaurants at a Hilton hotel.

To celebrate a significant family birthday we booked a table for 9am today for 8 people at Lure on Latrobe, unfortunately we were 5 minutes late, herding that many people(aged 85years to 3months) has it’s challenges. We waited outside for 5 minutes with people in front of us to be told that our booking had been crossed off! «Did we cancel» was the question, no! What had obviously happened was a group had come in a few minutes earlier and said yes to our booking. We weren’t prepared to wait for 30 minutes or more outside for a table so where do we go at late notice? The Hilton Atrium Café was suggested, it had been 20 years or more since we had been there and it has seen lots of changes. Arrived to find that a table for eight would have to be two round tables for four or… the delightful staff member said«lets put you in the private room». Glass walled set up for 20 it was perfect especially with a 2yo and the 3month baby in the party. One of the walls was lined with wine, there would have been a lot of long lunches in this room! The food was excellent, great variety and quality that you would expect from a 5 star hotel, no charge for children and comparing café prices only a 20% premium, we could not be happier.

Back in Brisbane, I decided to give steak another shot, which led us to the Vintaged Bar and Grill. Sitting on the 6th floor of the Hilton, the space was quite nice and would be a good event space for a larger party. But this was dinner for two. We started with some cocktails, that took over 20 minutes to arrive at the table, and slurped those down with some very lovely little oysters; Why baby cow face isn’t on more menus is beyond me, but this was by far the best veal cheek I’ve ever had. Braised to perfect, the fat was melty, the meat fork tender, and it instantly garnered«Mmmms» in unison; Then came our mains. My coworker’s duck confit was amazing; crisp skin and fall apart meat, I was so jelly. My steak was just another example of Australia dropping the ball with steaks. Why they can’t season or cook them that well is outside my comprehension. The meat was cooked close to my order of med-rare, a bit over, but the meat itself just wasn’t that fatty and juicy. Lack of salt was the other big miss; Overall, everything we had was top notch minus the steaks and some long lulls in service for a fairly empty restaurant. Again, I’d go back on someone else’s dime but it wasn’t worth it if I had to pay.

The broad but odd space is interesting. They have tried, but the overall effect is somewhat bizarre. If you look up you’ll likely be both disenchanted and disoriented by the lights above, which are scattered in uneven rows that meet their precipice in a basic shopping centre style skylight. The space is somewhat flattened by Jetsons style open red lounge booths, which did little for my predatory instincts, or those of the friend I was with. The music clashed with a function downstairs, however the intersection was so mild that it didn’t significantly affect the atmosphere(that said, it didn’t raise the atmosphere and added to the sense of open predation in the space). The effect may have been different if it wasn’t Saturday night. The service was on target, but slightly overzealous in providing the bill. I must say I’m used to, and would prefer, to call for it, especially if we look to be engaged in conversation and where there are plenty of spare tables. The macaron I had was very well presented with underlying support of raspberry sauce and a mint leaf garnish(which complimented the taste nicely). I was left wondering how a person eats a raspberry sauce covered macaron in the Hilton without any cutlery. Two things I noticed were that the macaron was served cold(where it should be room temperature) and that the waiter mispronounced macaron as macaroon. Well, they served me after the food service was closed, which might account for the chill. As for the waiter’s pronunciation; it’s possible I am being too fussy. The three stars I’ve given this space relate mainly to my expectations of the Hilton as a brand. While some polish was very nicely present, there were a few minor aspects that didn’t seem to represent the brand in a major city.

The lift to Hilton’s Vintaged Bar & Grill transports you, seemingly, miles from the hustle of the Queen St Mall. Amongst it’s cosmopolitan fit-out, your ear drums can rest and find solace in the calm of this restaurant. Your wallet can also let out a metaphorical sigh of relief as you order from their lunch meal for $ 25(main meal and a choice of a glass of wine, craft beer or soft drink). We dined for lunch as part of a Unilocal UYE and the restaurant was buzzing but not overwhelming. The service was impeccable and, for me, the right balance of attentive without being too pedantic. Although they’ve narrowed their ‘$ 25 Lunch Deal’ to six options, it’s a high quality cast making it all the more difficult to select between parmesan crumbed veal, wild mushroom macaroni with a slow cooked hen egg or grilled reef fish. I ordered the braised beef cheek in Pedro Ximenez with puréed cauliflower and found myself enjoying the simple favours. Satisfied without feeling like I’d over indulged, it’s great value for money. Also, tease your tastebuds with an after lunch cheese platter($ 10) and the coffee and raspberry macaroons($ 3.50 each). And kudos for a restaurant after meal coffee that tasted like coffee!

I went for a quick $ 20 lunch. The service was good, the place is quite nice — however out food took a while to come out and we both ordered the mussels — they still had the beards! I’d be willing to go back and try the other $ 20 options — but steer clear of the mussels unless you like sandy shag in your food. There was also a wee crab in the broth — I have no issue with crabs, but indicative of not being washed very well.

I admit that the Atrium at the Hilton was screaming out for a makeover but I couldn’t help but be disappointed when they replaced those outdated upholstered armchairs and that vertical skyscraper painting of the waterfall. I still remember coming here fifteen years ago as a first year uni student, looking up at that monstrous waterfall and sharing with it my idealistic vision of how I would change the world — in-between drinks and the free flavoursome seasoned nuts they handed out. This has all been absorbed as part of the new Vintaged Bar and Grill restaurant. An old highschool friend and I came here for drinks last Friday night. Though we longed for the way things were, the renovations are impressive to say the least. ‘Vintaged’ refer to their wine and steak specialty as opposed to their décor because there’s nothing old fashion about their sleek, gleaming surfaces, private dining area and their open drinking lounge. I liked the friendly and open service — most important in an upmarket hotel where sometimes the staff can come off as pretentious and wanky. When I asked for a recommendation about a wine list, the waitress admitted she didn’t know much about wines but referred us to another staff member who offered to take us into the cellar for a wine tasting. Well, we weren’t in the mood for a wine tasting so I settled for a house red. Then to top off our evening, Vintaged still hand out the same flavoursome seasoned nut mix. Although my friend and I only came for drinks, I’d love to sample a steak here. They serve mostly black angus variety in grass-fed, grain fed or wagyu. Fellow Unilocalers– please give me a Unilocal if you’ve had a meal experience here.
