I am a visiting tourist from Los Angeles. I love Munich and the food is great here. However, the sushi in Europe is frequently lousy, and many types of fish you can find on the West Coast are not available here in Europe. For example yellowtail is almost unknown in Munich — or impossible to find. This is the most common type of sushi in Los Angeles, San Francisco and many other towns, and it is everywhere. Much of it is shipped from Japan or other places by air. But yellowtail is just the beginning. There is SOMUCH you are missing out on here in Munich. So it is puzzling that SushiShop has such a huge and graphic menu, but an extremely limited selection of fish. Almost all the sushi places in Munich offer only red tuna and farmed salmon(including ikura, which is expensive). Occasionally you can find mackerel or seabass or even hotategai, but it’s nothing to write home about. Well, actually the hotategei here in Europe can on occasion, be pretty good. Furthermore, I have found it strange that true sushi bars in Europe are almost unknown. You never sit at the bar and order directly from the sushi chef.(!) I can only conclude that this style of service would be considered an overpriced rip-off by Europeans. Restaurants are seldom run by Japanese. Your green tea is not included in the meal with unlimited refills as in the US, but they charge for each and every cup. If you can live with these crippling limitations, sushishop does a respectable job. I liked the marinated fish bowl they offered. There are many variations of maki. How can the menu be so big and the selection of fish actually be so small? I also found the green tea to be not up to the standards i expect. It was very thin, without any of the dense, green tea pulp swirling around in the cup. For what you get, the bill is too high. Bear in mind also, that restaurants in Europe are generally expensive anyway, but for the sushi you get in Munchen, it’s even higher. Sushishop could improve if they obtained other nearby fish sources, such as oysters, crabs, and crevettes from the French coast, which could be made into outstanding sushi.

After a few visits here I decided the good food I had my first visit wasn’t a fluke(fluke is a fish, get it? Haha, epic bad puns! Anyway…) even though every time I’ve gone the dining room is almost empty. They seem to do a brisk business with takeaway. The dining room is beautiful but casual. Apparently this is a small chain with many more locations in France, but the menu is decidedly not chain food. There is a huge selection of rolls and other dishes available. The maki offer standards(tuna and salmon maki), exotic(spicy aubergine miso) to kind of weird(fried chicken roll!) and lots more. There is also a large selection of vegetarian rolls available. In addition to maki, sashimi and handrolls there are also tartares available, and chirashi(fish on a bed of rice). Accompaniments like miso soup, seaweed salad and desserts like mochi are also available. I’ve mostly stuck to more simple fare like spicy tuna rolls, salmon sushi and sashimi, ikura(salmon roe) sushi, hand rolls and the marinated chirashi, but so far everything has been quite good and tasted very fresh. There are large, varied sushi platters available and I’d love to get a group of friends together in the near future to sample more of the large menu. I’ve probably been spoiled by having amazing sushi in LA, San Francisco, NYC and Tokyo, but Sushi Shop is very good and definitely worth a try. The prices are reasonable for the high quality. There is cheaper sushi in Munich but I think the food here offers a good value for the price. The chirashi especially, since it’s a pretty generous portion of fresh fish on rice for under 15 Euro. A few notes: if you’re eating in your order will be taken at your table by a server, and your food will be brought to you by a server, but everyone pays at the till. There are lunch specials also available. It’s a pretty new place and I think it has a lot of potential. I’d love to see it stay open and the location is very easy and convenient. I think of it as a really high-end imbiss, which is a compliment. Food is fast and convenient, but still high quality and offers a pleasant dining-in experience in attractive surroundings.

Very good, the best sushi I have had in Munich! The location provides a very positive atmosphere around the restaurant.
