Review #200!!! Only fitting it’s for this insane, insane, off the walls drunkfest.
I don’t know how I survived that first (and only day for me) of Oktoberfest in 2015 as I was flying back home. How did I get back to the hotel? Where did my key go? Why am I sleeping on the floor outside my room? Is this the right room? Where the heck are my friends? These were all questions I had when I woke up in front of my hotel room door…
The day started innocently enough with my friends and I arriving on the grounds around 11am with no table reservations whatsoever. Definitely need to get one months in advance… We ended up being in the outdoor area of the Schoffenhall, which is the kickoff tent where the Maypr of Munich taps the first keg/​barrel.
We ended up sharing a table with a bunch of friendly German guys who showed us the ropes of attending Oktoberfest like a real German. Apparently, wearing the lederhosen is no joke, and will definitely help get you into some of the tents that are known more for allowing Germans in.
Our first beers finally got to us around 12:30pm, and thus, the next 10 hours of drinking gigantor beers began. After a couple of hours, my friends said they had to go grab something from the hotel (which was luckily a 5 min walk away). I never saw them again. Apparently they went back and took a nap –_​–
I ended up sticking the the German guys and then it started pouring rain, so we tried to get into the main tent that typically only lets Germans in. Who needs friends anyway? I made new ones that could get me into places :)
This is where my night kind of ended. Moral of the story is, I don’t know if I could handle more than a weekend of this, I have no idea how people can stay for longer, or even the full two weeks O_​O

So it’s taken me a while to write this review as it’s kind of hard to accurately convey what Oktoberfest is. It’s like a combination of a big party, lots of booze, culture, pretzels, lederhosen, fair food, more booze, sing-​a-​longs, sizzling meats, sweets & candies, carousels, tilt-​a-​whirls, history, and even more beer. It’s an all-​around good time for almost anyone.
We got there to see the parade that kind of kicked off Oktoberfest. It seemed to last forever but was really cool to see everyone dressed in dirndl and lederhosen and etc.
It really is the biggest fair I’ve ever been to. You can get there earlier in the day and ride the rides and eat all the food around and take in the sights of the ‘Fest. As the day drags on, more and more people come and the beer starts to flow even more. One thing I noticed is that even though there are about 15 – 20 beer halls of varying size, it’s very orderly and there are police and medics very close by in the event of too much raucous or to help someone who didn’t pace themselves with the alcohol. You really do get a sense that the German people have a sense of pride in this celebration which appears to be a long-​running historical tradition. Of course there are a few that kind of ruin the vibe and try to turn it into the American equivalent of «Spring Break». I mean… be a little classy if you’re a visiting tourist, because it gives the rest of us a bad name.
I was a little scared at one point to see how some people can’t hold their liquor. There was a lady that didn’t get but 2 feet outside one of the halls and she collapsed and was literally blue in the face. The medics started heart compressions on her and her boyfriend looked beyond worried. I didn’t want to stay and gawk but it would be a tragedy if you came to visit Munich to have a good time and even up in the hospital or worse. Have fun but drink responsibly.
I would suggest you bring cash eventhough they have a ATM on the perimeter of the grounds. Also, taking the train in seems to be the best bet to get into the town as the streets are closed in some areas.
Although most people come for the beer/​drinks, it’s still a nice place to just bring the entire family to ride the rides and eat good food. I really mean it when I say there is something for everyone. It is a lot of walking so you may want to take that into account. I also didn’t see a lot of people there with strollers. It’s really kind of crowded so every little space counts. I’m not sure how much the fair side of things represents German culture but the beer halls and and sense of community and comradery that people have is bar-​none.

Wenn es ein Restaurant gäbe, wo ich nie einen Sitzplatz bekomme, es immer viel zu laut ist, nur Sturzbetrunkene herumlaufen, Getränke maßlos überteuert und schlecht eingeschenkt sind, wo Bedienungen einem schlecht gelaunt das Getränk hinstellen, das man schreiend bestellen muss, wo man an der Toilette ewig anstehen muss während es nach Fäkalien und Erbrochenem riecht. nein da würde ich niemals wieder hingehen. Abgesehen davon dass man als Frau hier auch noch ständig Belästigungen ausgesetzt ist und aus der Menge heraus angegrabscht wird. Irgendwann schafft es auch immer jemand einen schmerzhaft anzurempeln oder mit Bier zu begießen. Und auf dem Weg zum Oktoberfest muss man schon tagsüber Bierleichen, Urin– und Kotzlachen, torkelnden Besoffenen und Schlägereien ausweichen. Und dann zahlt man dermaßen viel Geld, egal was man dort kaufen will. Ich weiß wirklich nicht was daran so toll sein soll.

Das Oktoberfest ist halt immer toll, aber es gibt schon einige Betrübnisse. Die Zelte sind fast nicht mehr zu erreichen nach 5 Uhr. Das Service hat sich auch verschlechtert. Der Abfallberg in den Strassen ist fast nicht mehr zumutbar, und die Varianten der Standerl ist lässt auch zu wünschen übrig. 42 mal gebrannte Mandeln ist nicht so anreizend, und die Qualität der Waren die auf der Strasse zu kaufen sind, haben ein (en) Massenanfertigungs-​erscheinen/​Geschmack. Ich muss sagen die alte Gemütlichkeit hat etwas gelitten.

Going to Oktoberfest is a bucket item that shouldn’t be missed! The Wife and I had a wonderful experience. My only regret is that we didn’t factor in enough pre-​drinking time to enjoy the other half of the grounds away from the beer tents. Most folks don’t realize that only 50% of the grounds are dedicated to beer. The other half are rides, games of chance and kiosks of wine, gingerbread and spiced nuts.
In order to make sure we would have a seat, we went through
to get a tour of the grounds and a reserved seat in one of the tents. It is a great way to go if you want some history and a place to plop down.

As an American, I can only tell you about my experience here. I don’t know how authentically German this event is in 2015, but I can tell you that it was extremely fun. There seemed to be a mixture of about half Germans and half foreigners from all over the world. Everyone was there to drink beer and have a good time. I didn’t have any problems with servers not understanding English.
This is the type of even that is what you make of it. If you go alone and sit in a corner it would probably be boring. If you go with friends and meet new people and explore a beer tent, it is awesome. The servers do their jobs extremely well, carrying large food trays and heavy beer mugs through the crowds. The bands all sounded great and surprisingly played covers of a lot of American songs.
Each beer tent had different elaborate decorations and theme. They all had a different crowd and slightly different Oktoberfestbier and food menu. There are lots of meat, cheese, and bread options. For seating, there are outdoor beer gardens that you can sit in without tickets. The tables inside the tents are reserved but you can make friends and find seats when other people leave. Bathrooms were crowded but adequate.
There are carts outside the tents with slightly cheaper food. The festival grounds look like many other carnivals — lots of rides, games, souvenirs, and vendors. The underground public transportation has a stop at the entrance to the festival, which is convenient. Like I said, it is what you make of it. Try out a few different tents during different times of day and decide what is best for you.

Oktoberfest happens mostly in September, and I am writing this review in December. That’s about how long it takes to recover from Oktoberfest. It is the biggest party on the planet — 7.2 million people over the course of the event drinking 6.9 million liters of beer and another 120k liters of wine. There are 878 meters of urinals.
There are 14 large tents and another 20 small tents which are actually wooden buildings that are constructed each year in an enormous park, and then torn down after the event to be used the following year. When I say a large tent, I mean a large building that holds up to 10,000 boisterous revelers drinking their body weight in beer in a day. Difficult to describe, it’s about 70% drinking, 10% eating, 10% music, 5% carnival rides and 5% shopping. There’s really nothing like getting tipsy on some of the best beer you’ve ever had and then eating the best food you’ve ever had, followed by getting on a ride that spins you around at about 3 Gs in the middle of the night with lots of flashing lights and deafening music while you’re wearing a Dirndl or Lederhosen. It’s something you have to do once in your lifetime.
The photo ops are everywhere with barmaids carrying 50 lbs. of glass and beer in their bare hands, Clydesdale horse teams dragging wagons of beer barrels through the streets, pretzels for sale that are so big they look more like hula-​hoops, traditional trachten, 20-​somethings climbing on top of tables and downing a liter of beer in one breath. It’s all very impressive and always to the accompaniment of bands loudly playing Ein Prosit with a gladdening accordion flair.

In town for Oktoberfest 2015. What a great event. Very family friendly and more so than we expected. Lots of carnival rides available. Large area and not overly crowded.

Die Frage ist eher was man erwartet.
An den Abenden und vor allem am Wochenende immer wieder proppenvoll und immer wieder auch voll mit betrunkenen Leuten. Also wenn man dann selber dort ist und ein wenig was vom flüssigen Brot zu sich nimmt ist es dort an sich ganz lustig. Nüchtern sollte man sich zumindest in keines der Zelte verirren, da macht es sonst wenig Spaß.
Außerhalb des ganzen kann man auf dem Oktoberfest auch auf dem Jahrmarktsteil viel Spaß haben auf den ganzen Fahrgeschäften die sich in jedem Jahr leicht in Position und Art verändern.

Lucky me! My company sent me for an annual group meeting in Munich this past September, and it just happen to be during the Oktoberfest. So after a couple of days of hard work, my boss and I decided to drop by and experience it for ourselves.
This is my first trip to Germany. in fact, its my first trip to Europe. I have to say, this trip has be everything I imagined and more! I’ve read and heard a lot about Oktoberfest before, and wishing i could be part of it. Now that I am here, I couldn’t have been more happier.
i was warned the night before that what goes on in Oktoberfest is wild, and boy, they weren’t kidding. it’s a HUGE festival where people come here and celebrate beers (Yay!), and drink beers ALL DAY! Lots of beer breweries come here and set up their tents in this huge land. Its hard to imagine all the building looking tents are all temporarily, and they will will get taken down when the festival is over.
So my boss and I started wondering around, trying to find this particular beer tent and meet up with his friend. I can’t believe how big this place is. There were so many people! There were music playing, people were singing and dancing, and everybody were having a great time. And of course, beers! There were so many beer vendors and its hard to pick just one.
There were also food. Lots traditional Germany dishes its impossible to try them all. However, I did the best I could in the beer tent where my boss’s friend managed to reserved a couple of seat for us. The whole experience has been so incredible, I am hoping to come back again.

Typical American tourist… I had no idea what to really expect here.
It’s a massive carnival! Complete with rides, games, fair food and of course, the beer tents.
We rode the Ferris wheel and it gave us a fantastic view of the whole event!
The fish tent had some of the best fish I’ve ever had. My friends hated it though because of the smell. I didn’t mind.

Ich hingegen liebe es!!! :)
Es ist zwar voll, teuer, die Männer grabschen oder sind unglaublich besoffen. Aber wer damit nicht klar kommt und sich nicht zu helfen weiß, hat hier wohl einfach nichts zu suchen…
Ich gehe jedes Jahr, mehrere Male auf’s Oktoberfest… was gibt es besseres, als sich in sein schönstes Dirndl zu schmeißen, über die Wiesn’ zu schlendern, um dann ‘a Maß zu trinken, nette Leute aus aller Welt kennen zu lernen, mit dem Liebsten lecker Obatzter zu teilen, als Zeichen der Liebe ein Herzal zu kaufen und am Ende ein paar Fahrgeschäfte zu fahren und sich dann für den Heimweg oder für Zuhause ein paar Süßigkeiten mitzunehmen. Jedes Jahr, immer wieder schön…ich freu mich schon auf nächstes Jahr! ;)

** My mini-​guide to Oktoberfest **
Will you enjoy Oktoberfest? Much of it depends on your personality. It’s a given that this annual party is going to be full of crowds (many of which are very boisterous), that it’s nearly impossible to get reservations at tables ahead of time, that getting a beer may at times seem harder than gaining entrance to chat with the pope, and that the majority of food and drink are beer and meat. If any of these things sound largely unappealing, you probably won’t love it. Beer drinkers: you may love the beer, but it’s damn hard to get one, and the only way you’ll succeed is if you’re outgoing and eager to introduce yourself to new people.
I loved it. LOVED IT! The food at Oktoberfest is a foodie’s dream. The schweinshaxen, a Bavarian specialty of roasted pork knuckle, is featured prominently, and absolutely ridiculously good. All the tents themselves serve traditional German food, although I highly recommend the Ochsenbraterei tent: slow-​roasted ox sandwiches — the German equivalent of the juiciest beef brisket imaginable. There’s also a myriad of fish-​on-​a-​stick, apple strudels, pretzels the size of helium balloons, doughnuts, bratwurst, currywurst, everything imaginable. Don’t just confine yourself to a tent — definitely try all the food outside of it as well!
Dirndl/​Lederhosen or not? We read online before we went NOT to dress this way because Bavarians would be offended. BULLSHIT! There were people from all over the world and many different ethnicities dressed in traditional Bavarian costume. No one was judgmental or penalized.
As for the tents. There are about 14 tents, 10 being major ones. THOUSANDS of people fill each tent. The majority of tables in each tent are RESERVED. People/​families have tenured tables and basically it’s next to impossible to get a reservation at the tents unless you have a party of 10 or more and reserve it online months in advance. Since there were only two of us, we employed a strategy that relied primarily on my gumption. Which understandably swelled as I consumed more and more beer. If you go in the afternoon, I understand that it’s easier to get in. But when you’re stuck consuming 3+ liters before the dancing starts, and for sure you’ll be falling down drunk at that point.
We got there on a Sunday evening and went three nights in a row. Hofbrauhaus is CRAZY. After failing miserably there, we started at the Paulaner Winzerer tent. Large amount of outdoor seating. Noticed that the majority of people outside in one area were foreign. Found a seat and managed to get served. Sucking down that first liter (about 2.2 16 oz pints) of Paulaner felt like HEAVEN and once we had this under our belt, we headed for the Augustiner tent. The Augustiner tent was massive but I managed to see a beer maid (uh, madam), sternly waiving to some people as I walked in. She seemed to be shepherding people into a table, so I grabbed my husband’s hand and jumped into a seat at a table with strangers. We had wonderful conversations with some people from Serbia and a couple of guys from Italy. We consumed another liter with a nice bunch of people from South Africa. We sang Ein Proset and laughed belly laughs.
From Augustiner, we made our way straight across to Hacker. Little did we know that Hacker is supposed to be the «party tent.» At this point, it was only about 7pm, but everyone was standing on the table benches. FYI, the tents all have live traditional German oompah music until about 6pm. Then things degenerate into a combination of German band vs American classic rock. We were shoved into a heaving crowd and I pretended to be associated with one of the tables of gyrating young people. The beer maid believed me when I said we were with them, and brought us two more liters of Hacker-​Pschorr (quite a nice Oktoberfest brew). The young Germans who were partying and standing on the tables invited us to stand up there with them and we all danced and partied together for at least an hour or so. Singing Neil Diamond’s «Sweet Caroline» with my new German friends was probably one of my Oktoberfest highlights.
The other MAJOR POINT i want to mention about Oktoberfest is the RIDES. Many, many, many rides. So many topsy-​turvy rides. I forced my husband to go on a couple of them with me. The best entertainment for sure would be to stand around outside by the rides around 9pm. You’ll see drunk lederhosen-​clad men spinning and hurling themselves on these fair-​type rides. I can’t think of a better thing to do than to drink LITERS of beer and then hang myself upside down over the city of Munich.
Over the course of three days, we met people from all over the world, laughed harder than I’ve laughed in a long time, had amazing roasted and cured meats, and chugged some of the best beer in the world. Will go back again someday. PROST!

Man hasst es, oder man liebt es — so wirklich dazwischen gibt es nichts.
Auf jedem Jahrmarkt/​Kirmes sind die Preise erhöht, egal ob für Süßwaren, Bratwurst, Fischsemmel & Co. oder für die Fahrgeschäfte. das weiß man und nimmt es in Kauf — oder eben nicht.
In bessern Hotels kostet ein 0,5l Bier schon mind. 5 €, da beschwert sich kein Mensch. Hier wurde nun die 10 €-Marke für 1l Bier überschritten. Heftig, gar keine Frage. Aber werde ich gezwungen, hier eine Maß nach der anderen reinzuschütten, als wenn es nichts kostet?
Vielleicht mag das Ambiente in den Zelten mit einem 4 oder 5 Sterne Hotel nicht mithalten, es ist aber in jedem Fall etwas besonderes und es gibt Live-​Musik, die ich im Wirtshaus ums Eck nicht unbedingt habe.
Und wenn ich Beschwerden über den Dreck, die Betrunkenen etc. lese — das hat ja mit dem Oktoberfest an sich nichts zu tun, da müsste ich doch das Publikum bewerten.
Es liegt ja nicht am Oktoberfest, dass viele Besucher meinen, sie können sich da wie die Sau benehmen.
Jedes Jahr schlendern wir 2 – 3 Mal über die Wiesn, ich mag es einfach. Nicht jeden Tag und lieber mittags unter der Woche, aber auch mal später am Abend, denn wenn es schon dunkel wird geht’s ins Riesenrad.
All die Düfte von gebrannten Mandeln, Bratwurst…
Ein Besuch im Motodrom, beim Schichtl und im Teufelsrad — immer wieder schön.
Freue mich aufs nächste Jahr!
Mein Tipp: Sucht nicht immer nur die großen Zelte auf, geht auch mal in ein kleines Zelt! Die Stimmung ist nicht schlechter, aber erheblich weniger Volltrunkene.

Hallo zusammen,
wir waren vor einiger Zeit beim Oktoberfest in München. Es war eher ernüchternd. Im Prinzip ist das ganze einfach eine große Kirmes in Kombination mit Schützenfest und Karneval mit Kostümbeschränkung.
Die Stimmung im Zelt war gegen Abend in Ordnung, übertrifft aber nicht die Schützenfeste, die ich bis jetzt kennengelernt habe.
Die Preise auf der Kirmes bzw. im Zelt sind einfach frech und unverschämt. Nachdem die Kellnerin dann noch am ende des abends 20% Trinkgeld EINGEFORDERT hat war das Fass einfach übergelaufen. Zumal in den Preisen bereits Gehälter und Trinkgeld mit eingerechnet sind (stand zumindest auf der Karte).
Grabscherei an den weiblichen Besuchern scheint am der Tagesordnung zu liegen. Außerdem torkeln einem bereits morgens alkoholisierte Menschen entgegen oder man stolpert über kotzende Menschen auf dem Weg zur Theresienwiese. Alles in allem war es also einfach nicht das was man erwartet und wird in meinen Augen absolut überbewertet. Wir sind günstig hin gekommen und konnten bei Freunden übernachten. Extra hinfahren und ein Hotel buchen würde ich jedoch niemals. Und wenn der Zufall es nicht will, werde ich nicht mehr hin fahren.
Einen Stern gibt es, weil ich Fahrgeschäfte cool finde. Den anderen dafür dass ich auf den Toiletten im Zelt nicht zu lang warten musste.
Von mir keine Empfehlung ;)

Definitely a must on everyone’s bucket list. It’s a giant festival/​carnival focused on beer and delicious Bavarian food!
My friends and I were stoked and had read many a cautionary tale warning us to come early so we doorbusted the Hacker tent and queued up at 9AM (doors open at 10AM).
FYI, everyone shows up in leiderhosen and dirndles so if you like dressing up at all, I highly recommend you do so. It’s tons of fun and my male friends felt left out so they left midday to buy some leiderhosen. I was surprised by the number of older people who participated in the festivities as well.
The Hacker tent is supposed to be the young party tent, which is why we picked it. Once we were in, they started serving beer immediately (contrary to certain reviews we’d read online which said that they didn’t serve alcohol until noon). The tent did not fill up until the early afternoon but since we were a party of six and didn’t want to risk not having a table (and also because we wanted the entire Oktoberfest experience), it was a good thing we came in the morning. If you can, you should try to reserve a table as the majority of the tables in the hall are reserved.
Tip your waiter and they will be good to you and check in on you regularly. The food here is delicious; the goulash was so good and the fried chicken is a must-​get.
We left our tent after 10 solid hours of drinking and went to wander around the carnival area. We went on the ferris wheel and the swings and also the little carousel bar.
Most of the people we met were extremely friendly although there were a couple outliers. All in all, Oktoberfest is an experience that you should definitely check out at least once in your life.

Ja, ich mag das Oktoberfest und bin hier meist zum Einzug der Wies’n-Wirte und zum Trachtenumzug vertreten. Das hat Tradition mit meinen Kindern.
Leider verkommt das Oktoberfest immer mehr…
Verkleidete (Plastiktrachten aus Müllbeutelmaterial) verschandeln das Traditionelle. Andererseits kann man hierüber auch herzhaft lachen.
Tja, und die Bierpreise… Da braucht sich keiner wundern, wenn viele schon ordentlich angeheitert erscheinen.

Mei, bin halt durch und durch a Münchner Kindl und somit ist das Oktoberfest schon immer a Pflichttermin gwesen.
In den Jahren hat sich zwar die Anzahl der Tage und die Lust drauf mal so und mal so abgespielt. Aber 2 x is für mich a Minimum (mit der Arbeit und der Family).
Es hat sich halt wirklich im laufe der Jahre zu einer Massenveranstaltung entwickelt und das ging auf Kosten der Gmiatlichkeit.
Deshalb ist für mich auch die Oide Wiesn so wichtig und auch mein Favourit. Ansonsten natürlich as Augustiner, die Fischer Vroni, die Bräu Rosl und gelegentlich ins Käfer. In der Ochsenbraterei schau ich eigentlich immer für a Ochsensemmel vorbei — lecker ! Mit Fahrgeschäften hab ich´s gar nicht mehr, früher hab ich keine Achterbahn ausgelassen, jetzt lass ich lieber die Finger davon und lass lieber den Jüngeren den Vortritt. Natürlich billig ist die Wiesn nicht — war sich auch noch nie, wer also schon hingeht kann sich die Jammerei soooo teuer ! echt sparen.
Ich finde eigentlich viel Schlimmer, dass sich das excessive Gesaufe so massiv entwickelt hat… besonders gut zu verfolgen wenn man auf der Rückseite der Bierzelte vorbei geht. Immer wieder sehenswert der Wiesn Hang der mitlerweile den schönen Spitznahmen «Kotz– und Bieslhang» hat… und mittendrin liegen die Jungs und Mädels ! — echt gschmackig !
Aber wen wunderts? da kommen einem die Jungs und Mädels ja schon auf der Rolltreppe mit der Bierflaschn (vorglühen) auf der Wiesn entgegen, dann a paar Mass und dann wird gekotzt. Grausam !, des hat mit Gemütlichkeit nix mehr zu tun und so wie die teilweise beinand sind kommt außer Fremdschämen auch noch dazu, dass sie total weggetreten sind… gefährlich.
Ach bevor ich´s vergess… auch immer wieder Sehenswert den ultimativen Horror von «Tracht» — und da is es egal ob des a Dirndl ist oder a Lederhosn, das Gruselkabinett auf der Wiesn ist gigantisch.
Im Grunde genommen muss a jeder für sich wissen ob er hingehen will oder nicht… ich freu mich auf 2016

I love beer and was so excited to finally go to Oktoberfest this year! After working out and eating healthy for weeks, I was not only prepared, but salivating for my new all carb beer and pretzel diet. I came into Oktoberfest on opening day expecting it to be crowded and crazy and full of drunken people. But what I wasn’t prepared for was how completely chaotic it would actually be.
There were thousands of people. Everywhere. And along with that meant no crowd control. Pushing and shoving. Shoving and pushing. Getting knocked into. Getting pushed forward. Getting side swiped. Getting pushed backward. It was overwhelming. But still I soldiered on looking for any beer tent that would have room for me and my husband. Most were completely full. And the one’s that weren’t, well they had lines. Ok not exactly lines, but hoards of people pushing and shoving and yelling to get in. The «bouncers» would occasionally choose random people out of the crowd to come in however there was no order to this. Worse yet, they would let groups of friends of people already inside in before anyone else. I even saw one take a bribe! I waited in the hot sun for over thirty minutes at one before giving up. Other beer gardens that did let everyone in had nowhere to sit. And while you were desperately looking for an empty table– anywhere– there was the whole pushing and shoving and getting knocked into going on. Do you ever go to a party and have to be the designated driver and wonder what you’re doing there? That’s pretty much how I felt the entire time.
Eventually I got a crêpe, pretzel and gave up. We walked a little over a mile away and found a really nice beer garden with plenty of open space, more authentic food and a better atmosphere. It really turned the entire experience around. Plus I wasn’t getting pushed and shoved anymore. I know I went to Oktoberfest on the first day so I’ll give it a little leeway in that I’ve heard it’s better during the week with less people. That said, I’m happy I’ve seen it but am in no rush to ever go back.

I’m living in Germany for a while now, but before had never got the chance or good timing to visit this one of the biggest festival here. So my friends and I decided to visit this year Oktoberfest. And it was much more fun than I ever expected. Let me try to put it a bit simpler, It was like in a theme park but with cool lederhose and lots of beers.
On the first Sunday of the Oktoberfest, it got a big matching of different tribes inside Germany or sometime near Germany also will join in and wearing their own traditional costumes walk about the city center of Munich. It’s very interesting and cultural. We weren’t at Munich yet when it happened, but we did saw on TV. And the whole will be the open ceremony for this. The festival usually starts from mid or late September, It last 16 days long. You can come anytime you want. The festival is held in an area Theresienwiese, people like to called the Wiesn as well.
After we checked in our hotel and we put on our Lederhose, then we were ready to go. It isn’t a must thing that people dress up for this, but surely would be more fun. My first impression of this, It was quite similar with most of the Folk festival in Germany. It got a lot amusement rides, sidestalls and games inside, but for each of them, people must pay to get in. it is quite often here. We tried serval of them, it was fun.
Later on, we started to look for a nice tent for some beers. There were couple tents inside, we didn’t have any reservation. So we were just looking around, it was quite difficult to find a place to sit down. But luckily, it didn’t take us much time and found a right table for our group of people. It was really lots of people and lots of beers. Usually, I don’t drink beer that often, but the beer here, tasted different than the usual one I tried. It was quite good. Although it was quite crowed, the atmosphere was simply awesome. Inside this place, they also offered some traditional food, some of them were really good. I think the only thing people need to worry is their wallets. A glass of beer was around 10 — 12 euro. At the end of the day, even we tried to keep it low cost, it still did cost us a fortune. I couldn’t image how much other people spent on it. At the end of the day, we did have great time. It was brilliant experience. We’ll probably visit this place again.
Overall, I am not so sure, is it a thing for everybody. But I think, this is something that you must try it at least once. If you do like to visit, come with friends, it will be more fun.

Oktoberfest was intriguing. It is a bit different than what I and perhaps many would expect from the United States. There is much more to do than just drink. In fact you can do anything without drinking.
It is basically a giant Fair or Carnival with many vendors selling food, games with potential to win prizes and rides such as roller coasters. I can’t imagine the amount of vomit they must have to clean up when many are drunk going on these rides.
There are many foods to try and you can bring kids regardless of age.
Most places will only accept cash and if you want to drink, for the most part you must remain within the beer gardens.
Beer gardens are giant places that appear as barns with tables and dance floors. They’ll have food and beer of course. I just wanted to try a brew, however, from what I can see they only have them in mugs served by the pint that seem as though they’re pitchers.

Beste Stimmung im Schützen– und im Hackerzelt. Internationale Musik im Hofbräuzelt. Auf der Oidn Wiesn geht es eher ruhig zu, ist definitiv ein Geheimtipp. 2015 war endlich mal wieder weniger los. Preise von über 10 € pro Maß machen sich eben bemerkbar.

Von mir ein spezieller Tip für knappe Kassen: Die Kantine vom Spaten schräg unterhalb der Bavaria hat auch während der Wiesn geöffnet und hier kann man super günstig essen und das Bier gibts auch zu normalen Preisen.
Da es ein Geheimtipp ist, findet man hier in der Regel auch immer einen Platz und kann in Ruhe essen. Die meisten Gäste sind Wiesnbedienungen und Beschäftigte aber herkommen kann jeder.

What a fun and memorable experience! Unbelievably well-​organized, the beer is good, the food was not bad considering how large a place it was. People come to enjoy themselves, sing along to kitschy music and let their hair down a little. And that they do! I enjoyed myself far more than I ever expected to.

Aber hey einfach das Beste aus der Sache machen :)

My dad, cousins and I went to Munich for Oktoberfest 2014. We visited the festival several times during our one-​week stay. It was one of the most memorable experiences of my life! I think that everybody should add it to their bucket list– as long as they don’t mind being around large crowds of people! The people at the festival were all so friendly and helpful! We made a lot of great friends. We got to eat great food, drink beer, and sing & dance with people from all over the world. It’s very important to visit the festival at least once during the daytime and at least once at night. It is a completely different atmosphere during different times of the day.
One important thing to know is that the tents are crowded at all times. Oktoberfest is just one big party. Each tent has a different atmosphere and style. Different genres of music are played in each tent. It’s fun to try them all and figure out which is your favorite. The tents serve food and steins of beer. I would recommend trying as much as you can from each tent. It’s a really awesome experience!
If you don’t have a reserved table (which most people don’t) patience is key when finding a table at night. You pretty much just have to walk around like a creep and look for people who are paying their bill and getting ready to leave. We had it down to an art by the end of the trip. It didn’t bother me at all because I loved walking around and seeing the different people singing and dancing along with the band. It was so fun to see which American songs were popular hits among the patrons at Oktoberfest– lots of oldies! If it’s colder outside, the outdoor tables are completely vacant.
Things you must do while in Oktoberfest:
–Watch the opening day parade in the streets
–The tents are the best place to be for the true Oktoberfest experience. (My favorites were Lowenbrau, Augustiner-​Festhalle, Schottenhamel, Pschorr-​Braurosl & Paulaner)
–Have a beer in one of the beer gardens
–Learn the song «Ein Prosit» — they sing it all the time at the festival. Everybody stands up, sings the song, and clinks their beer mugs together.
–Drink several steins of beer (obviously) The beer is only served in quantities of one litre.
–Visit the wine tasting (unexpectedly fun)
–Wear a dirndl or lederhosen — The experience was ten times better when we dressed up
–Talk to/​sing with strangers– they are all very friendly! (Obviously there are exceptions, but 99% of the people we met were very kind and welcoming)
–Eat pork knuckle and potato dumplings for a meal
–Try the foot-​long bratwurst and weiner schnitzel
–Get a hot pretzel
–Try the spatzle (this was my favorite German dish)
Tip: Definitely bring plenty of cash, also coins to tip the bathroom staff
Tip: Be sure to tip your server! They take that seriously.
Tip: You need to be sitting at a table to order a beer in the tents. They will not serve standing customers.
Tip: If you find a great seat at a beer tent on a crazy busy night, don’t give up your seat in hopes of finding a better one at another tent. Good seats are hard to come by!
Other things I would recommend doing while you’re in Munich:
–Visit the Glockenspiel at a time when the figurines dance at the clock
–Go to Hofbrauhaus for a beer and lunch
–Take the drive to Neushwanstein Castle
–Visit Linderhoff
–Visit Nymphenburg Palace
–Go to the old Olympic stadium

Best festival ever. This is Disneyland for adults. Been to this a couple times and will keep going back. Get yourself some authentic lederhosen or drindl and have a great time. Bring cash as they do not accept anything else. And always have a game plan to get back to hotel. Don’t be one of those idiots passed out in a bush somewhere.

We were in Munich durring Oktoberfest 2013. Possibly one of the most fun trips I’ve ever taken. Drink steins of beer while meeting people from all over the world, grab a huge pretzel. Bring cash!!! Eat pork knuckle. Ride the swings or a rollercoaster. We even did some wine tasting at kiosks in the fairway.
The Germans wear thier lederhosen and dirndls they have owned for many years. We sat with a mixed group of British and Germans discussing various traditions. Max (German) pointed out to me the different styles of garments and how they represent the origin, wealth and age of the person wearing.
These German beers are 5%, that doesnt keep full grown men from getting hammered, brawling or puking all over. The medics are on top of it.
Don’t forget to bring some coins to tip the restroom staff. They work hard getting everyone in and out of a clean and stocked water closet (WC).

Please, go to Oktoberfest! Chance of a lifetime. If for no other reason than to experience other cultures.
We went two days… and closed it down both days. We had only planned on going one day, but met up with some people in city center who wanted to go, so we went back.
The festival is crazy for sure. Don’t go expecting a calm time. I will say that there were NO drunkin fights or craziness like that. It was clean, and we organized. The craziness is the fact that the grounds are vast, the tents enormous, the crowds full and roaming and the beer is flowing and oh so big.
The bathroom situation, being a girl, was totally fine. We were a 4 girl group and had no issues finding or using a clean bathroom. Each tent had one. Lines, maybe, but it was fine.
The food was great. Though, and very disappointing, the pretzels were gross. They were just dry and flavorless. All the beer is one size. Just accept it and drink.
There is a lot of chicken offered and it is good. The fish on a stick (it has its own separate outdoor tent) was so awesome. It is a full, head included, fish on a stick. The taste was like nothing I had tasted. Fresh, clean, flavors, but yet simple at the same time.
Reservations:
YOU DON’T NEED THEM. We got into the 4 of the most famous tents without issue. Sure, as the day went on we would have to sit with strangers, but what would you expect. Oh, and night 2 was spent in the Prosecco tent… yes, I said Prosecco. It was so much fun. The atmosphere there was like a fairy tale. It is a little small and there ended up being a wait to get in, but we were inside in no time.
Each time we would take the subway back towards city center and would eat again at the hub. The Munich subway is great.

Man mag es oder man mag es nicht. Ich mags 1x im Jahr…

Wenn es Dinge gibt, für die Deutschland insgesamt, München aber ganz besonders sicherlich weltweit bekannt sind, dann gehört dazu sicherlich zumindest mit an erster Stelle das Oktoberfest.
Zurückgehend auf Feierlichkeiten anlässlich einer Vermählung im bayerischen Königshaus, treffen sich die Massen auf der Theresienwiese. Unzählige unschuldige Biere, Ochsen, Fische usw. usw. werden geopfert.
Das Fest selbst dauert — abhängig auch mit davon, wie der Tag der Deutschen Einheit fällt– mindestens 16 Tage, manchmal auch etwas mehr. Denn wenn der 3. Oktober etwa auf einen Dienstag fällt, werden Montag und Dienstag gerne noch mitgenommen. Doch mit Auf– und Abbau sind es locker drei Monate, die die Theresienwiese rund um das Oktoberfest in Beschlag genommen ist.
Ich gebe es ja zu– als ich 2001 nach München gezogen bin, natürlich «musste» ich mal auf die Wiesn. Und das Problem mit der Lederallergie (man wacht am nächsten Tag auf, hat die Lederhose noch an und starkes Kopfweh– muss also alles am Leder liegen) durfte, konnte, musste ich schon am eigenen Leibe erleben.
Bierzelte (wobei Zelte es nicht wirklich trifft), Fressbuden, Fahrgeschäfte– und alles durchaus zum Sonderpreis. Als ob jeder ein kleiner Apotheker wäre, wird gut hingelangt.
Aber es gibt sie ja auch noch, die guten alten Dinge, wie etwa den Schichtl. Und die Oide Wiesn soll sich lohnen– ich selbst habe es dorthin jedoch noch nicht geschafft. Denn zur Wiesn-​Zeit versuche ich München möglichst zu meiden– denn eine Zugfahrt mit einem Regionalzug nach München ist zu dieser Zeit alles andere als ein kleines Abenteuer. Und das Leben so in vollen und mitunter übel riechenden Zügen, in denen fleißig vor– und nachgeglüht wird, zu genießen, ist nicht ganz meins.
Nicht ohne Grund spottet man über das Oktoberfest ja auch als «Intersuff” — schließlich saufen hier ja Herren und Damen aus aller Herren Länder.
Sicherlich, mit den richtigen Leuten und in der richtigen Stimmung mag es Spaß machen– aber im großen und ganzen bin ich persönlich kein so großer Freund von Frohsinn auf Knopfdruck. Und ich glaube, auf der Wiesn wird auch ohne mich genug Umsatz gemacht.

It just so happened that I was in Germany during Oktoberfest 2014. Upon realising this was the case I had to decide if I wanted to make a special day trip to Munich. I decided to and was glad I did. I’m not a beer drinker but still had a great time.
It reminded me of the royal show which we have where I live except on a massive scale but with a lot of beer.
As a non beer drinker I was worried I would get bored but this wasn’t the case.
I went on one of the family days (a day where rides and some foods are discounted) and it was so cute seeing a lot of little kids wearing drindls and lederhosen. Actually a majority of people (tourists and locals) were dressed up and it looked totally awesome. Even I made the effort.
I did a fair amount of research beforehand and knew that you needed to be seated at a table to get food and drinks in the tents. If you go early this isn’t a problem, especially in the food tents. I focused on the food tents. I had morning tea at one, lunch at another.
Later in the day I walked through one of the bigger beer tents and it was jam packed. You were in for a long wait if you weren’t already seated at a table. So a big tip is to go early if you’re intending on drinking.
You can buy souvenirs galore as there are lots of souvenir stands and you also won’t go hungry as food can be bought at stands throughout the grounds.
In the tents you need to tip, I wasn’t sure how much and it seems I was quite generous going on the reactions of the servers. I didn’t mind as it added to the experience.
It wasn’t jam packed walking around as this particular day it was overcast and there were light showers on and off.
There are also rides galore so if you love going on amusement rides you won’t be disappointed.
I went by myself but would have enjoyed it more in a group and if I ever go again I’ll make sure I’m in a group.
If you’re a non beer drinker worried about going, don’t as you’ll still have a lot of fun.
If you’re not a crowd person go on a day that isn’t sunny or hot or go mid week.
If it’s not on your bucket list it should be.

I had set the bar very low for Oktoberfest. I imagined way too many people, way too many beers and a day that ends up like New Years Eve: overpriced, too much drama and just disappointing. I was so wrong.
We flew into Berlin for the Berlin Marathon and then afterwards took the train down to Munich. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Munich — South and transportation could not have been easier (just a single train ride and then follow all the people). With our preparations for the marathon, we slacked and didn’t get any table reservations. This worried us at first, but I promise you, the worry was for nothing. As a group of 5, we had absolutely no issues finding a seat no matter where we went. Yes, after maybe 4pm, it got a bit tougher, but the key is to just wander and wander and be ready to move when someone tells you to. Early in the day you can get an entire table to yourself, but just be sure to drink a liter quickly and then you will have no problems with being too shy to ask someone if your group can join their table. As the night goes on, tables open up again and it is easy to grab a spot. Everyone here was incredible friendly!
We planned on only going to the fair for about a day. maybe a day and a half, but ended up going every single day for the week we were in town. Oktoberfest was just plain fun. And without any of the typical American drunken slobbery and debauchery. Now, don’t get me wrong. There were drunks here. And we saw a few fights. And a few passed out individuals… but in general, the place was full of jolly, happiness. Truly the adult Disney World.
We visited every tent (multiple times), but my favorite beer was Augustiner-​Festhalle. My favorite tent was, of course, Hofbräu Festzelt… but there certainly was not a bad tent in the whole place!
The rest of the festival is fun as well! TONS of food stands, carnival games, and rides. Everything was a tad pricey, but I definitely recommend the Ferris Wheel. A great way to soak in how freakin’ huge the place is! The sheer number of people is astonishing and while yes, it is crowded, it was never overwhelmingly so.
Also prior to going, EVERYONE told me that I needed to get dirndl, but I laughed it off thinking that I would look like an idiot. I’ll tell you now that you will look like an idiot if you DON’T wear it. Seriously. I can count on one hand how many people in basically an entire tent who were not dressed up.
Despite having a BAC that will never again return to normal, Oktoberfest was an incredible experience. Buy dirndl/​lederhosen and book your trip NOW.

Es das beliebteste Volksfest der ganzen Welt. Es gibt eigentlich für jeden etwas.
Das einzige was doof ist, sind die Preise. Aber für 1 mal geht schon. Ausser man hat wertmarken.
Ich finds cool dass die Leute aus aller Welt kommen und sogar in Tracht hin gehen

Meine Wiesn-​Première hat mir sehr gut gefallen.
Nicht nur das es im Marstall Festzelt wirklich gut abging, das Essen schmeckte und das Bier in Litern floss, sondern auch das gesamte Drumherum.
Wie sich die Damen im Dirndl rausputzen und die Herren ebenfalls in nichts nachstanden, mit Lederhosen und Hut.
Wie die italienischen und spanischen Reisegruppen über die Wiesn pilgern.
Wie es vor und in den Zelten rund geht.
Wie viele lustige und auch coole Fahrgeschäfte es hier gibt.
Das alles und noch viel mehr, machen so einen Oktoberfest-​Ausflug schon zu einem Erlebnis der besonderen Art.
Ich komme sicherlich noch einmal wieder und freue mich jetzt schon auf eine Wiederholung. Vielleicht sogar ja schon im nächsten Jahr?! :-)

Auch wenn man kein Fan von Massenaufläufen ist — einmal im Jahr muss es einfach sein — Oktoberfest. Diesmal ganz chillig im Biergarten vom Hacker gesessen und ein halbes Hendl und eine Radler genossen. Die gibts übrigens in den wenigsten Zelten und man muss sie sich oft selber zusammenbauen — schade!
Ja, die Wiesn ist teuer, überfüllt, laut etc… aber nirgendwo trifft man auf so einen bunten, schillernden Menschenmix wie hier — auch wenn der sich mit zunehmendem Alkoholgenuss oft seltsam und manchmal ausfällig benimmt. Tracht in allen Farben und Formen — und auch Japaner in Lederhosn sind keine Seltenheit! Trotz allem ist die Stimmung meist fröhlich und entspannt — das setzt sich fort bis zu den U-​Bahn-​Fahrern, die dann launige Durchsagen machen. Fazit: Mann muss es nicht lieben — aber ab und zu mal erlebt haben.

My general belief is that the best moments of your life will come when a few simple things combine perfectly — food, music, and people. Beer, at least in my opinion, totally satisfies that food requirement. And with that, we have one of the greatest moments of my life. The thing about Oktoberfest is that it is rooted in something fairly simple — beer. And enjoying it with other humans who also like beer. And celebrating culture, with beer. That’s it. In an age where we’re used to festivals that throw lights and gadgets and electronics in our faces, a step back to such simple pleasures was refreshing and absolutely brilliant.
It was October 2013 when I went to Oktoberfest, on a weekend trip during my time living in Rome. A vacation from a vacation. On that Saturday morning I stood atop a table with a stein in my hand, with Germans and Egyptians and Americans and more, arms wrapped around strangers. We sang at the top of our lungs to each other, clinked glasses in celebration, and laughed like never before.
Overall, there are many a stories that could come from that weekend. We drunkenly road drop zone rides with a view of thousands of folks roaming the grounds. We made up drinking games (like we needed them) that meant cheers-​ing every time we saw a weird hat, nice boobs, or the PRETZELLLL MAN. (P.S. the pretzels he has are large and delicious). We got covered in mud trying to make our way up a hill in the rain. All of it comes together to make for a weekend of amazingly joyous energy and celebration.
Definitely one of my favorite festivals to date, and I would highly suggest adding it to your bucket list.
And here’s a little advice …
First off, get to the tents early. Groups have booked tables way ahead of time, and they get full REALLY fast. By 7 in the morning masses of people are already crammed in front of the tents hoping for a spot. You can probably get a table if you’re there early enough, but they’ll kick you out around noon when people with reservations come in. More than likely you’ll already be drunk enough by that time, and there is plenty else to explore.
Second, is to get this thing called Radler. It’s half lemonade, half beer. Now I know you may come to Oktoberfest to down as much beer as possible, but the Radler is pretty tasty and a refreshing way to pace yourself a little. (Personal experience also shows it’s a very good way to get yourself back in the game when you realize your hangover is setting in).
Third, is to take a damn stein. It’s against the rules and you have to be sneaky, so I probably shouldn’t write this in the Unilocal review, but I feel like it’s almost tradition or something. Okay, so don’t do that … or yeah.
Other little tips include to keep in mind it might start pouring rain in the middle of the day, so prepare to be happily drenched just in case. Also, respect and appreciate the mix of culture and humans around you. AND TRY THE FOOD. It’s delicious.

Ich kann den Hype um die Wies’n nach wie vor nicht verstehen, ein riesiges Volksfest, welches abertausende Betrunkene produziert.
Mal ab von den stetig steigenden Mass-​Preisen, die ja jeglicher Beschreibung spotten, auch das Essen wird jedes Jahr teurer und das ½ Hendl immer kleiner ;)
Trotzdem ist die Wies’n auch mit der alten Wies’n nun wieder ein wenig Familienfreundlicher geworden, auch wenn es nach wie vor extrem teuer ist dort einfach mal mit der Familie einen Nachmittag zu verbringen. Gegen Abend wird es dann unhaltbar, da immer mehr betrunkene Leute aller Nationalitäten vor Ort rumtaumeln und den Mageninhalt entleeren.
Als Single ist es hier sicherlich ein Paradies, nirgends lernt man schneller Leute kennen oder gar die Liebe seines Lebens/​Abends.
Man sollte, wenn man in München ist zu der Wies’n Zeit, auf jeden Fall einen Abstecher hierher machen.

Oktoberfest 2013~ in Munich, Germanyyyyyyyyyyy!!!
Think about all the raves, EDM events, parties, bdays, bonfire, raves, beer tents, beer fest, alcohol-​driven fest you’ve ever been in your life. Now multiply that by 100!!!
WOW. I love everything crazy, wild and over the top. I mean, if you are going to do something, might as well go all out! Right!!! Came here after a month of traveling around Europe back in August-​September. Came here right after my fav Roma.
First off: Munich is cold as ice! Nobody told you that part. Mm hmmm. I arrived to bustling crazy city of Munich via train from Roma on a fine Friday morning in what else: my mini skirt. And nearly died!
But worried not. The best has yet to come. Went to the hotel, got situated. Drank enough mulled wine and ate enough MEAT to warm myself up for the next day.
And off we go for the opening ceremony of Oktoberfest 2013 on a Saturday morning. Took a train from Marien Platz– right down town Munich with hundreds of others. Walked a few blocks and viola. Welcome to crazy wonderland.
At first glance: it looks a lot like a crowded fairground. Lots of fish roasting on the open fire (Yummmmmmmmm: get that), chicken huts, pork knuckle huts, donuts and amazing pastry huts! And of course: The beer teeeentsss!
Off we go to our first beer tent– Paulaner tent. Just google that hot mess.
Omg– came in to see several thousands happy drunks. White and green tent, people singing, full tables. One liter of beer glasses being carried by well endowed German woman!
Holy shit!!! To get/​sit at the tables, you need reservation. We didn’t get any because it was $$$$$$ as hell. But a very friendly group of German people offered to let us two girls sit at their table with our 3 other friends. The only way you can order a drink is at the table.
One– I don’t drink beer.
Two– I don’t like beer
Three– I had beer in Oktoberfest!!!
Yea that was pretty much it. Made friends with the Germans, Italians (kept taking my pics… pervs). Italians bought me beer! We cheered every 2 minutes. One person start the cheers, it goes around an entire tent of maybe 20,000 people? Holy epicness. There was an 85 year old grandma dancing on the table. She’s hardcore.
After an hour, we left to go to the other tents on this massive 40 acre play ground. Within seconds: lost 3 of our friends! OMG! KIDDING ME? It’s not like hundred thousands of people are here. So we did what a sensible adult would do in such situation. Got some roasted chicken, salty fish and went back inside the tents to drink some more till the sun goes down.
Have you ever got hungover @ 4 pm? After 5 hours of drinking? We are still singing that German song in our tent. Waited in very long yet efficient lines to the bathroom. Even had some amazing German donuts cause alcohol demands sweet!
Overall– didn’t expect to have this much fun!!! ANd OMG~ this place is made for bunniessssss like me. Party @ 200 percent all day every day! WHAAAAT? There was no toning it down. People are so nice, there were catfights (damn american chicks!!! giving us bad names) but people were nice. I loved every second of this crazy, wild and outrageous adventure.
I might just be going back again for 2014! But probably stick to wine or bring some liquor with me so I can get as drunk as all these other fools were :)

Der einzige Grund dahinzugehen ist die Krinoline und die Oide Wiesn.
Der Rest ist nur Massenfasching und –besäufnis.

Pollos, corderos, cerdos, terneros, etc., que debe tener sus vidas para la gran fiesta no nacen hoy (tiene todos como ganado max 5 – 6 meses de esperanza de vida, sólo 5 – 6 semanas de pollo), siempre que no esperar en partes hoy pacientemente en cualquier tienda de frío a destino como parte de un trata. Sólo por razones de bienestar de los animales es la Oktoberfest de 2010 prohibida y el Theresienwiese revegetated se define en un Zoo de caricia para los animales, que normalmente tendría sus vidas para este evento.
