My daughter asked for a sample of strawberry ice cream, and the woman serving us said, «Strawberry is strawberry!» as she’s never been asked for a sample of a basic flavor. We ordered a scoop of the strawberry. «Anything else?» Yes, I’d like to try your chocolate, and at this point she actually ROLLEDHEREYES and said, «Chocolate is chocolate! Who tries chocolate? It’s not normal!» But she did give me a taste, which I didn’t care for – even chocolate ice cream varies in quality and flavor, which is why I wanted a sample – so I retorted, «Well, I’m glad I tried it because I didn’t like it.» The scoop of strawberry was only 1 euro, which might explain the chintziness and crappy attitude. But if you’re going downmarket, don’t give yourself a name like Amadeus. Also, you’re next to a hotel, so expect some customers who are tourists and don’t know your brand of ice cream or your local customs.

I wandered into Amadeus Café after spending part of the day at Oktoberfest a few weeks ago, and the experience was generally very nice. Given that I had been fully enjoying myself at the festival, my memory is slightly impaired, but here are the things I observed: — The server allowed a big group of us to make ourselves comfortable and figure out where we were in the city, which was very helpful. — The server also worked with us very well, though none of us spoke German, to order and pay. — The food was not German, which was a nice change, and the tortellini I ordered was really delicious. — They had a good selection of beer, though at that point I was taking a break from it. — The open air design was nice; it allowed us to people watch and enjoy the good weather while still taking a break. — I imagine the primary customer comes in on foot or via public transit, as parking would be a bit tough on Bayerstraße. — Location is good though, and give that it’s right downtown, prices were really reasonable. So, for an American a long way from home, it was a nice break from the craziness that is Oktoberfest. Nothing outrageously great, but certainly enjoyable while I was there. I’d recommend, and I think that from the other times when I walked by and the place was absolutely packed, others would too.
