Great place to look for DiY art-sy supplies whether for yourself or as a gift. Store itself is clean & well organized. Selections is very good! Downside, they are expensive but you are assured of quality esp. since they carries known brands. Enjoy diy shopping!

Great arts & crafts store with some of the rudest sales people ever. Like other reviewers have said, you can find everything you need… and a whole lot of other cool stuff. I always leave with about 5 more project ideas in mind. Their yarn selection alone is fantastic, with 100s of yarns in a rainbow of colors and hues and textures. And the paint selection… drool drool drool. It’s not cheap, but the quality is very good, and the assortment of goods is terrific. What I don’t like is how rude the saleswomen are(the sales*men* have been helpful, so I don’t know what’s up with the Frauen). Maybe they aren’t given proper training in how to work with customers? This was true in both the Altona and Jungfernstieg stores. Twice, I’ve been almost reduced to tears because I asked a question, and the answer I got was the verbal equivalent of a slap in the face. A few other times, the saleswomen were so bitchy that I almost dropped my basket then and there and left… but as I had made a special trip for the materials I was looking for, I just gritted my teeth and dealt. I am not an overly sensitive person, but even if I was, I shouldn’t be encouraged to feel that it’s my fault for asking a question. Pros: Great selection or interesting, high quality arts and crafts supplies. Cons: Staff need better people-skills

*grabby hands* If you’re an American expat, I’d compare this to a Michael’s or a JoAnn Fabrics, but a bit more upscale. It’s not cheap, but it’s a good, solid hobby store, with helpful clerks, and a decent selection of a wide variety of hobby materials. Every time I go in here I emerge, dazed, with bags full of ribbon and glue sticks and paint-it-yourself frames and twine and cotton batting and acrylic paint and floral wire that I didn’t need, as well as the one thing(usually refills for my glue gun) that I went there for. Lots of fun! Edit: I would also like to add that it carries a large selection of good-quality fine art supplies. My sister is a professional fine artist, and I tend to buy her gifts here — pens, inks, paints, pencils, charcoals, and more.

As the father of two creative girls aged 11 and 9, Idee is their place of choice at the weekends. Full of materials and colourful ideas there is something here for every crafty taste.

Everything you may want for your DIY projects. Its also amazingly organized. I was looking for a couple of things i needed for a small handcraft project, and i wasn’t expecting to find EVERYTHING i needed there(of course i did). One hick though, its not exactly cheap, but i doubt you’ll find another place that has everything imaginable possible in the crafts world…

While most young children grew up with the fantasy of being set loose in a big toystore or a candy store, I grew up begging my mother to take me to the craft shop where I could have at the finger paints and popsicle sticks. Fast forward 20 years, and I still go into every arts & crafts store I come across. But nothing — NOTHING I have ever seen compares to «Idee». Nothing. «Idee» is Willy Wonka’s Chocolate Factory for the arts and crafts. If you’re an art hobbyist or an art professional, «Idee» will be the place you dream of when you go to sleep at night. The large store is divided into departments covering most, if not all, of common crafts including painting, drawing, decopage, knitting, calliagraphy, décor, plasterwork, claywork, the list goes on. The store is mainly geared towards hobbyists, but the prices are for enthusiasts(one star off for that). Shopping for a cartload is tempting, but keep in mind that you’d be paying a pretty penny. Once in a while, it may be worth it — no one wants to exhaust Wonderland.
