«Tracey», people are starting to say, «did you eat any German food at all while in Berlin?» To which I answer«Of course»(just look at the photo), «who could resist Currywurst, the traditional fast food of Germany? It originated in Berlin, you know?» And what could possibly be better than to eat this traditional fare in the shadow of the 4.7 acre Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe? Nothing gets that hunger up quite like imagining my ancestors being starved and worked nearly to death before being offed en masse via poisonous gas. Pizzeria Pisa presented the perfect location from which to experience Currywurst. It was nearby, I was hungry, problem solved. There were other things on the menu(including pizza) but it was a day of walking and I knew I wasn’t going to waste an actual meal on this, well, this thing that I was obligated to consume while in Germany. I posted the photo on Facebook before digging in and amused myself throughout my meal with the raw comments that it garnered. I’d tell you my favorites but just realized that Facebook removed that photo without notifying me. See, Unilocal is going to understand that it’s just a sausage(actually more of a large hot dog) and not anything else. Get your mind out of the gutter; I ate that thing. It wasn’t very good but I imagine that could be said of every Currywurst, a steamed then fried pork sausage swimming in a catsup bath topped with(or mixed with) curry powder. The price was right(5.9 €) and the fries(included) were fine. If you find yourself hungry after seeing, in order, 1) the Memorial to the Murdered Sinti & Roma, 2) the Memorial to Murdered Homosexuals and 3) the Memorial to Murdered Jews you’ll be right there at Pizzeria Pisa for lunch which has a menu containing other things(even spaghetti) besides Currywurst. So it’s a decent place to fill up before you continue that walking tour of 4) Hitler’s Bunker, 5) the Memorial to the victims of Fascism and Militarism 6) the memorial to burned books and 6) the monument to the protest by German women to save their Jewish husbands. I’m telling you, if there’s ever a day to try the traditional fast food of Germany it would be the day of this(self-guided Rick Steve’s) tour. As Nike implored, just do it.
