Melbourne Canteen, atmosphere is pumping, hipster but well balanced rustic feel about it, well laid out and relatively clean although a bit dusty and dark. We had been in in Europe for some time and we found that Berlin had aussie/​kiwi breakfasts so our group was pretty excited about the option to have aussie/​kiwi style poached eggs, soft on the outside and superbly gooey in the middle, so we headed down to the canteen to get our dose of big breakfast, well a dose of something we got, was it poached eggs. maybe not. Grey hardboiled eggs atop cold bread and cold bacon on the plate, tomatoes that had been cooked for hours and left to go soggy and cold and a salad that was possible made three days ago. Maybe this explained the 1 and a half hour wait for the food to come out. We sent our plates back to the kitchen to be remade and the staff seemed to not know why, no offer of an apology but they did offer a round of free drinks to make up for the problem, we all ordered our «free» drinks only for the staff to forget about them, and add them to the bill at the end, the food took another 45mins to come out from the kitchen by this time is was past midday after arriving at 9:30am. Initial service was friendly but not very attentive. and overall care for the guest was low.

Such a great little spot. Service was great, food absolutely delicious, great coffee and really the best Bloody Mary I’ve had in a while. I had the corn fritter breakfast and it was both beautiful and so tasty while most of my party got either the eggs Benedict or florentine which were also amazing (I snuck some bites), the hollandaise sauce was very very good. The wifi is fast and for a small café they were very accommodating to my party of 6.

One of the best breakfast places in Kreuzkölln! There are several combination available but I always go for the classic: poached eggs with bacon — served with some roucula salad and toast — just delicious!

Ich mag den Laden und werde sicherlich noch öfters wieder kommen.

I found the Eggs Florentine rather disappointing. The english muffins and the spinach were cold and the whole dish simply lacked flavour. My juice on the other side wasn’t cold at all. For the price I really would have expected more. At least the staff was friendly.

Am besten gleich 3 Kaffee bestellen, weil bis zum Frühstück ist es ein langer Weg! Bestellen is nicht unkompliziert, weil erstmal alles aufgesagt wird, was es nicht gibt. Dass dann eh was anderes kommt als bestellt, versteht sich von selbst. Die eggs benedict waren kaum genießbar, und die Rechnung war ein schlechter Scherz !

We waited 1 hour and 15 min for food! After 1 hour they told us it would be a while without any idea of when. We had to down the food in 5 to have a chance to get to our next destination. Good coffee but I could have had 4 in that time. No way there is a chef working in this place. I could have baked the bread and grown the vegetables in that time! The English muffin was stale and the salmon was swimming in hollandaise. My friend liked the mushrooms but said after that long a wait anything would do. This totally put us off any hip recommendations from Berliners. A lot of surface and zero content. 2 stars for a semi sunny outdoor table.

This place is in general okay, especially if you’re a homesick australian living in Neukölln. But in general it is not cool, or that special, and can be really busy at peak times due to the hype machine. If you’re visiting Berlin for only a few days, I would not recommend this place due to the plethora of other more ‘authentic’ options

Teures Frühstück und wenn man es genau nimmt ist das ohne Zweifel Betrug aber trotzdem war der laden voll (von hipstern)
Service überfordert

Eggs Benedict für den gebotenen Geschmack zu teuer. Soße schmeckte merkwürdig säuerlich. Lieblos daneben geklatschter Rucola Salat und eine Mini-​Tomate zur Krönung. Der Americano schmeckte auch eher wie von Gestern stehen gelassen.
Wenigstens kann man der Bedienung noch ein bisschen Deutsch beibringen.

Good spot for flat whites while getting work done on my laptop. One of my favorite hangouts in the neighborhood, with always super friendly, English-​speaking staff.

Pretty okay place, but the food is kind of mediocre. Aussie flavours, but it still lacks a little more quality. I found it to be too average. The space is cool though and the staff was very friendly.

Very quick service; I ordered Eggs Florentine and they came fluffy and a bit spicy. Really tasty!
All in all a nice place to hang out and to enjoy Aussie style… :)

Two times went there for the chocolate brownie, both times it was dried out and below expected minimal standards for decency. Any vegan options would be appreciated.
Hipster paradise apparently, too pricey for locals.

Nun muss ich leider eine Aktualisierung schreiben. Mein 2. Besuch in der MC war weniger erfreulich: Als erstes wurde uns mitgeteilt, dass es keinen Käsekuchen gäbe. Statt dessen wurde uns eine Walnuss-​Bananen-​Schokotropfen-​Torte angeboten. Die war auch lecker, aber das Stück riesig groß, kaum zu schaffen und doch etwas süß.
Um halb 5 wurde es dann skurril: Erst wurden wir wegen Schichtwechsels abkassiert — und dann wurden wir offensichtlich unsichtbar.
Gegen Viertel vor 5 wurde der Käsekuchen gebracht. Hätte man uns nicht sagen können, dass der Kuchen später noch kommt? Ich hatte gleich gesagt, dass ich extra wegen des Käsekuchens weit gefahren bin! Dann hätten wir eben nur etwas Kleineres gegessen und darauf gewartet! Wir beschlossen, dass wir uns noch ein Stück teilen würden. Mein Begleiter ging zur Theke und sprach die beiden Bedienungen auf den Käsekuchen an — und er wurde komplett ignoriert. Eine der Bedienungen drehte sich um und ging in die Küche. Der andere wusch Geschirr ab und reagierte ebenfalls nicht einmal mit Blickkontakt. Danach wurde der Tisch neben uns zwar bedient, wir wurden jedoch weiter ignoriert. Ich habe zwischenzeitlich überlegt, ob ich einfach meine Thermoskanne, in der noch ein Rest Kaffee, den ich mir auf die Arbeit mitgenommen hatte, war, heraushole, um nicht ganz so auf dem Trockenen zu sitzen.
Man sollte noch dazusagen, dass das Personal keinen Grund für eine Überlastung hatte: Es waren ungefähr 4 bis 7 Tische besetzt.
Ich kann es ehrlich gesagt nicht verstehen: Ein Café, in dem die neue Schicht die Kunden der vorhergehenden Schicht nicht weiterbedient…

Pouched eggs on toast … ORGASMIC !!! Dude … The atmosphere in the restaurant is also really nice, and the waitress was super nice. Although i have to say its abit pricey, but the food was amazing so i guess it was worth it :) so happy that this place is really close frm my place

Great breakfast spot with good coffee and even better eggs Benedict (with an interesting looking Berliner variation involving tomato relish that we didn’t try). We also snacked on avo on toast which admittedly is hard to mess up but was pretty good.
The only downside was slightly
chaotic service from the friendly staff — food came quickly but coffees and orange juices took around 30−40mins to arrive. A boiled egg also arrived at our table (twice) well after we finished eating which our waiter insisted was part of our original order (it definitely wasn’t). Overall a definite addition to my list of Berlin breakfast spots!

Ahhhh… Service is full of smiles and food is total deliciousness. Wonderful ambience and so chillaxed. I wanna be here eating and chilling every day!

Interesting. Because it appears the guy deliberately short-​changed me today! My bill was 9.80, I handed him a 50 and told him to keep 12… he handed me a twenty and a five and a pile of change, saying, «I think this is right». First off, how often will a waiter give you «13 Euro» in coins, rather than a bill and coins, when making change? And then rather than count it out for you, hand it over in a heap? The bit about saying «I think this is right» seems to be the alibi he provides in case he gets caught… «Oh, gee, I *thought* it was right…».
On the way home I got a «funny feeling» and dug the pile of coins out of my pocket (the 50 had come right out of a cash machine; I hadn’t had any money in my pocket until then so whatever change in my pocket was exactly what the waiter gave me)… sure enough, he’d shorted me by 5 Euro. After I gave him a decent tip, too! In light of your comment, he seems to be getting revenge on the customers for what he thinks is bad tipping. The chubby guy with a beard. Maybe it was an innocent mistake on his part but…
The food was okay and I do like the waitress I had before so I’m hesitant to give only one star…

The Melbourne Canteen is a perfect execution of the eggs and coffee brunch café. Situated well for both East Kreuzberg and Neukolln it’s surprisingly spacious inside with tonnes of natural light.
We had, on recommendation, the terrific flat white to accompany some beautifully made Eggs Berliner; that’s comprised of poached eggs over a little curry on muffins, served with hollandaise, a little rocket and some roasted cherry tomatoes. It was excellent.
We also ordered the mushrooms, bacon, sausages and fried potatoes as sides, all of which were great. They came on out plates which was strange, so if you have a thing about eating off someone else’s plate then make sure you get the sides on a separate plate.
The whole lot was delicious, and even when we’d greedily expended our Hollandaise and had to ask for some reserves the staff were attentive, chatty, but great too at leaving us be as we went.
I would heartily recommend and go again.

Oh I LOVED this place!!! So much so that in a three day weekend, I unashamedly visited it twice for breakfast. Yep. You heard me. Normally I would never go back to the same place in such a short trip, but dammit the breakfast was too good.
I went for the corn fritters which come with a huge salad piled on top. The crunch of the fritters went so well with the tang of the rocket and sun dried tomato salad. I also got a soft poached egg on top to melt all over it. De-​lish.
Day one I ordered a mint tea to accompany the food — it was boiled water with mint leaves which I absolutely love. The second day I got a sneaky cocktail (you can see how the progression of the weekend went…) It was a mix of bubbly and elderflower and was SO good.
The service was always friendly, though maybe a little slow. The atmosphere is nice, and definitely has that Aussie vibe. There seemed to be always a wait for the outdoor tables but there was plenty of room inside each time, so I’d advise anyone to have a look inside even if you think there may not be any seats as it seems like people are happy to wait just for the outside ones.

This place is a bad joke. Why is it always so busy? I’ve been coming here enough times (for breakfast) that i actually expect bad service/​food. There’s no way that the person in the kitchen is a chef unless he truly hates his job. There just isn’t enough care put into the food — raw bacon that they don’t even bother to separate, soggy un-​toasted bread, raw potatoes, no salt…
The service is atrocious. They ignore you, are rude, and again, just don’t seem to care. Once I asked for ketchup and it simply never came.
I gave this place 1 star because the avocado on toast is pretty good. Plus you can’t really go wrong with mashed up avocado piled on a piece of toast.

Great antipodean café with all the best bits of home — namely Flat Whites and Eggs Bene.
Breakfast menu is short but just what you need and the drinks menu is extensive.
Oh — and it’s also home to the best Bloody Marys I’ve ever had. Do try them.

Waren hier im Rahmen des Unilocal-​Treffens zu Gast und ich muss schon sagen, ein schöner Laden mit gutem Essen. Der Meatpie war sehr lecker und der Drink vorneweg auch. Die Live-​Musik hat ebenso gefallen wie die Freundlichkeit der Mitarbeiter vor Ort. Das Frühstücks-​Buffet soll sich lohnen, also muss ich hier wohl demnächst mal wieder hin.

On a envie de mettre une bonne note à Melbourne Canteen car le service (anglophone !) est très sympathique, les lieux sont simples mais agréables, il y a de la musique live certains soirs, et même du WiFi gratuit pour celles et ceux qui né peuvent pas se détacher de leur tablette ou qui ont épuisé leur quota de Mo chez leur opérateur. :-) Et puis déjà on adore l’Australie.
On n’a plus envie de mettre une bonne note à Melbourne Canteen quand on découvre la carte qui rassemble des pizzas (et non, en appeler une «Aussie Pizza» né fait pas vraiment illusion) et d’autres trucs qui n’ont rien à voir comme… des sardines à l’huile bretonnes. Certes, l’Australie n’est pas connue pour sa gastronomie mais il y aurait pu y avoir au menu plus d’une sorte de meat pie ou des trucs un peu cliché mais marrants comme de la viande de crocodile ou des toasts au Vegemite…
Au final pour la note je fais 50÷50… Ils font un brunch tous les matins à partir de 10h, ça vaudrait sans doute le coup de le tester pour redonner sa chance à Melbourne Canteen !

Australien hat die Pizza nicht neu erfunden, nur den Pizzen neue Namen gegeben.
Vorher war hier ein Italienisches Restaurant /​Pizzeria namens «La Tarantella» drin (gleiche Adresse, gleiche Telefonnummer).
Meine Pizza Sophia Loren, ach nein, Aussi Pizza hatte einen schönen dünnen Teig-​Boden und war insgesamt lecker.
Ein paar internationale Sachen werden auch angeboten, wie Tapas, Pies oder Sandwiches, Fish & Chips, Kuchen, etc.pp.
Ich verstehe ja das Australien ein großes Einwanderungsland ist und obwohl die Pizzen sehr gut gemacht sind, Pizza ist halt italienisch.
3,5 Sterne. Kann man auf vier hochrechnen.

Ehrlich gesagt, vom Besuch in der Melbourne Canteen hatte ich mir mehr versprochen. Den einzig guten Job hat der Koch respektive die Köchin gemacht. Wir waren an einem Sonntagvormittag zum Frühstück da. Meine Ricotta Pancakes waren grandios, ich würde sie auf Platz 1 meiner Pancakecharts setzen. Die Eggs Benedict waren lecker und in diversen Variationen erhältlich.
Der Rest wie das Barpersonal, die Einrichtung und die Atmosphäre enttäuschten fulminant. Nicht mal der Kaffee und der Chai Latte waren gut. Mein Americano (2,20 €) war so bitter und sauer, dass ich ihn stehen lassen musste.
Die Möbel sind extrem abgerockt, unschön, unhygienisch, ungemütlich, zusammengewürfelt. Shabby Look und schäbig sind zwei paar Schuhe. Abgerockt ist eklig.
Im Café war es extrem dunkel. Das Lokal verschachtelt sich weit nach hinten, dort war schlechte Luft und wie gesagt, Dunkelheit. Es gibt nur wenige Fensterplätze, wo es wiederum saukalt war. Ferner sitzt man nicht nur am Fenster, sondern gleichzeitig ganz dicht an der Bar, von wo es ununterbrochen lärmte (Bohnen mahlen, Geschirrklappern, Gequatsche vom Personal, …). Lärm bedeutet, man kann nicht chillen. Im Prinzip wird der ganze Laden von einer übergroßen Theke eingenommen — mittendrin und komplett raumfüllend. Viel zu groß.

One word: Coffee!
If you love coffee, then come here. They serve great coffee! They also have breakfast here, but I would rate it as average (with a star for the toast on avocado). The prices are ok, can even be cheap if you order a panini. Th eggs florentine are great (especially with a side order of avocado!). The pancakes disappointed me though, the serving size is pretty small and will leave you hungry. The toast on avocado is more american sized though and yummy! All in all the menu is not that big, but if you’re craving eggs and/​or avocado they have great options. If you like both you need to do a DIY order, but I think we can all handle that. I was not able to do any desserts, but the carrot cake looked delicious.

Wenn es Orte gibt die einem neue kulinarische Genüsse offerieren, dann lobe ich mir das. Die ‘Canteen’ bietet Speisen, welche es wohl so in Australien geben soll, das kann ich leider nicht beurteilen.
Was ich aber beurteilen kann, ist das man hier, sehr gut frühstücken kann. Und eins schreibe ich euch, trinkt unbedingt einen ‘FlatWhite’!

Wenn es um die Melbourne Canteen geht, bin ich ein bisschen hin und her gerissen und komme, nach mehrmaligem Besuch auch nicht ganz zu einem entsprechendenm Resultat.
Meistens ist es sonntags — man hat irgendwie Lust auf Frühstück aber auch irgendwie auf etwas Deftigeres und da ist man in der Melbourne Canteen richtig. Eggs Benedict und Eggs Berlin sind wohl der Renner schlechthin. Und man muss sagen, das Frühstück kostet zwar fast 8 € — ist aber auch dementsprechend lecker. Leicht zitronige Sauce Hollandaise, super geröstetes Brot und dazu Rucola und Tomaten, das schmeckt super.
Allerdings bin ich mir beim Kaffee und Cappuccino unsicher. Für 3 € pro Tässchen bekommt man zwar seeeehr guten Crema, allerdings schmeckt die espresso-​shot-​große Kaffeeportion fast nach nichts. Für mich verwunderlich, wenn auch verkraftbar.
Abgesehen davon bekommt man jedoch freies WLAN und so eignet sich das Café mit seinen kleinen Tischen auch mal dazu, einfach hier mit dem Laptop zu arbeiten.
Zusammenfassend liebe ich das amerikanische Frühstück hier, weil es sich qualitativ wirklich von anderen Lokalitäten abhebt. Allerdings überzeugt mich der Rest der Karte nicht wirklich. Schade, weil die Melbourne Canteen soviel Potenzial bietet.

Mein Freund liebt die Pancakes und ich die Corn Fritters und wir gehen gerne ab und zu zum späten Frühstück hin. Sind eher Kleinigkeiten, die zur wirklichen Begeisterung fehlen. Der frisch gepresste Orangensaft war so wässrig, dass ich den Verdacht hatte, dass er gestreckt war. Der Ingwer befand sich im Saft und nicht im Minztee, wo er rein sollte. Die Karte könnte ein bisschen variantenreicher sein — warum Pancakes nur mit Quark und Honig und nicht auch mit zwei, drei Alternativen? Auch die Corn Fritters könnte man in Varianten anbieten. Musikauswahl ist natürlich Geschmacksache aber letztes Mal fanden wir es irgendwie aufdringlich. Aber alles in allem eben ganz ok und wir kommen wieder für Pancakes und Corn Fritters.

Schade, früher mal mein Lieblingsladen. Mittlerweile ist die Qualität des Essens nicht mehr gut und die Portionen echt mini.

Völlig verpeilter Laden. Man spricht nur Englisch, ah ja ist ja supercooooool!
Auf nen Kaffee wartet man 40 Minuten, da Frühstück für die Kinder kam nach mehrmaligem Nachfragen dann nach ner halben Stunde (vor dem Kaffee!). Nach dem Orangensaft mussten wir auch mehrmals fragen und irgendwann, so nach ner Stunde, kam dann das Frühstück für die Erwachsenen. Das war sehr klein, eine Zutat fehlte auch noch, und teuer. Naja es gibt genug Alternativen im Kiez. No thanks!

Weder besonders gutes Essen noch freundliches Personal. Es wird gar nicht erst versucht deutsch zu verstehen. Man spricht englisch.
Wer Touristen treffen will ist hier richtig.

absolutely love their branding, absolutely love their style. A nice international café with a serious mission. The food varies. Some days its excellent, some days not so great. The staff is awesome though. No idea where the idea comes from that waiting staff should be trained. AND this is the only place that does corn fritters in Berlin.
Prices are slightly on the steep side which is why I’m only giving 4 stars. The place is also on the wrong side of the street, i.e. doesn’t get much sun. Still, one of the better places Kreuzkoelln has to offer.

Hey, ich bin immer wieder beeindruckt wie professionell das Personal hier arbeitet. Fängt schon mit dem Begrüßung an, dann die Schnelligkeit. Sie geben den Gast einfach eine Wichtigkeit und tun alles was sie können damit er glücklich ist.
Klar, es gibt immer mal etwas das nicht klappt, aber selten. Dann kommt immer irgend ein Cappuccino gratis hinterher.
Die Speisenkarte habe ich schon von vorne bis hinten durch, da könnte mal was neues kommen, aber für mich zählt der Wille. Und da wollen sie es gut machen! Immer sehr guter Service ist in berlin eine Seltenheit. Dafür 4 Sterne!

Zu 100% überzeugt bin ich ehrlich gesagt nicht. Obwohl ich hier seit Monaten hinwollte, meine Erwartungen aber nicht übermäßig hoch waren, konnte mich die Melbourne Canteen nicht wirklich vom Hocker hauen. Zum Einen hatte ich vom Inneren mehr erhofft, da die Theke unglaublich cool aussieht mit den länglichen glänzenden Kacheln. Das restliche Mobiliar könnte so aber auch in jeden Thai-​Eck-​Laden stehen. Im Hinteren des Lokals ist es auch recht düster, sodass die dunkelbraunen Möbel wenig Charme versprühen.
Die Karte ist recht überschaubar, was ja prinzipiell nichts schlechtes ist. Die Auswahl gefiel mir auch ganz gut und ich entschied mich für Eggs Florentine, die man sonst auf Brunch-​Karten in Berlin vergeblich sucht. Meine Begleitung nahm die Ricotta-​Pancakes. Das Essen ließ für meinen Geschmack ein wenig zu lange auf sich warten, mag aber auch daran liegen, dass ich ECHT hungrig war. Die Portionen sind ziemlich klein und ich hätte locker zwei Gerichte essen können. Die Pancakes meiner Begleitung waren laut ihrer Aussage zu mächtig, obwohl meiner Meinung ach auch diese Portion sehr klein aussah.
Das Nachwürzen meines Essens stellte sich auch eher schwierig heraus, da sämliche Pfefferstreuer auf den Tischen leer waren. Da sie aber offensichtlich länger nicht mehr gereinigt wurden, sahen sie voll aus. Als ich zur Theke vorging, um nach einem vollen Streuer zu fragen, würde ich schräg angeschaut und darauf hingewiesen, dass auf allen Tischen Streuer stehen. Ja, ach née… Als ich ihr erklärte, dass alle vier Streuer, die ich fand leer waren, gab sie mir eine große Pfeffermühle. Nach ein paar Minuten kam schon der nächste Gast, um sich die Mühle auszuleihen. Keiner der drei Angestellten macht Anstalten die Pfefferstreuer einzusammeln, zu säubern und/​oder aufzufüllen.
Bestellen und Bezahlen auf deutsch gestaltet sich auch etwas holprig, mit Englisch ist man also auf jeden Fall auf der sicheren Seite. Es gibt hier übrigens kostenloses WLAN und vorne an der Theke hängen die Zugangsdaten. Wären meine Eggs Florentine nicht lecker gewesen, hätte ich echt nur zwei Sterne vergeben können, da der Service echt unterirdisch ist (es waren insgesamt drei Angestellte da für nicht mal zehn Gäste). Ich werde es sicher nochmal hierher schaffen, vielleicht hatten sie ja nur einen schlechten Tag, da die anderen Bewertungen ja durchaus begeistert klingen.

J’y suis allée au tout début lorsque la Canteen venait d’ouvrir. J’au hésité un peu, j’étais un peu sceptique. C’est très anglo, né correspond pas à l’image un peu trash et anarchiste de Neukölln. Certains sont réticents à ce que ce genre d’institution s’installe dans le coin. On a peur que le quartier se transforme peu à peu en un espace bobo et aseptisé comme dans Prenzlberg. D’un autre côté, bien des cafés se ressemblent au fil du temps dans Neukölln, et la Canteen a sa propre personnalité. Alors à vous de voir.
Je viens d’y retourner et j’à la même impression. Je suis charmée par un service amical et chaleureux. On nous parle en anglais et c’est très anglo comme public, mais bon, cela fait autant plus authentique. Samedi aprèm bondé. Mon chocolat chaud est bon (pas extra, mais bon) et ma copine prend un panini au poulet et elle dit qu’il est très bon. La dernière fois, nous y avions dîné. Pizza et salade un peu chers pour le coin, mais très bons. Le serveur australien parlait très bien allemand (j’apprécie) et était mignon comme tout. La cuisine australienne ‘est pas réputée pour être extra funky. Vous n’aurez pas de grande surprise en allant à la Canteen, qui reste, son nom le dit, une cantine.
Au premier abord on pourraît croire à un endroit froid et hypster (hypster, ce l’est un peu aussi), mais ce n’est pas snob du tout et on s’y sens bien accueilli. Primordial pour moi. Alors je recommende et trouve somme toute la plupart des commentaires des autres Qypeurs un peu sévères

Australische Deko, tipptopp aber nicht arrogant. Das Personal ist auch aus Australien aber vielleicht nur zur Zeit wegen der Neurröffnung und –errichtung.
Leider hatte ich die Chance hier zu essen nicht aber die Karte mit Steinofenpizzen und Salate sieht erfolgversprechend aus. Die Coctails sind ganz originell aber eher klein und überteuert.
