even the softest beer, the“thirsty lady” is full-embodied. Not very comfortable, noisy, crowded, but very good craft beer. menue is on one of my photos. Opened: Tuesday 2 – 8 pm, Thursday 5 – 10 pm(food festival), Friday 2 – 8 pm, Saturday midday to 8 pm.

Consistently great beers and friendly staff. The thirsty lady is an interesting beer with a lot of flavor. I really enjoyed the pale ale and IPA, which was very hoppy. I also had a sip of the stout which had a light body and great flavor, I think it would be good for summer. The framboise they have currently is very tasty, hoppy with a slight fruit finish, but nothing like I’d expect from a framboise. When the markthalle is busy, this place is busy but if you come at an earlier time, you’ll have no trouble chatting them up. Plus at 2.50 or 3.00 a pour, you can try a few!

Finally, good American-style microbrews in Berlin. Great variety and almost all hits, especially the IPAs. This is tucked away in the back of Markthalle Neun and gets really busy on Street Food Thursdays. From 7 – 9 pm, the line can be 10 minutes or more long, so plan accordingly. Luckily, if you’re just trying to get your pfand/deposit back you can usually cut to the front.

It was my mission when visiting Berlin to try out the products of at least one proper microbrewery, so I ended up venturing out with a friend to the market that houses Heidenpeters’ little brew pub. There were three ales on tap and we had them all. Very nice. Markthalle Neun is slightly out of the way but not grossly so, and seems to also have other nice options, so don’t hesitate to hop(!) on the U-Bahn for a delicious and slightly atypical(for Germany) beer or three.

It seems as though I had Heidenpeters built up far too much in my head before finally making my way there, because it wasn’t as mindblowingly awesome as I had hoped. For one, there was only a pale ale on tap, when I was hoping for more variety. The taste was very pale ale-y, with a hoppier edge, but it wasn’t necessarily stand-out or distinctive. I mean, I love my American microbrews and was hoping his would be a bit more distinct in flavor than the standard pilsner beers regularly available here. Additionally, the service was slooowwwww. I guess that’s what you get for visiting on a night like Street Food Thursday, so I can’t complain too much, but even so, my wait for food was shorter than this. Also, the fact that I had to stand in line for five minutes to return my glass for Pfand was kind of frustrating, but that’s just part of the deal, I suppose. Of course, this review is not the be-all end-all, and I am looking forward to returning, perhaps on a Friday, when the atmosphere is more relaxed and hopefully there are a couple choices on tap. I would really like to give Heidenpeters a four or five-star review, so here’s hoping that my first experience was just a fluke.

They have an ale called the Thirsty Lady that is just delicious! It has exactly the right balance of bitterness and fruitiness. If you go to Heidenpeters on a Thursday, during the Street Food Thursday event at Markhalle Neun, it is near impossible to get a seat. Otherwise it is very relaxed. You can also buy bottles to go, when they have not run out.

A must-stop for anybody who enjoys variety. The dude brews small batches every couple of weeks. In the past few weeks he had a couple of IPAs with hops from New Zealand and one with a stronger malt, a very drinkable blonde, and a pale ale with amarillo hops. All pretty good.

i like beer. Germany is rightly famous for its brewing, but it continues to baffle me why it’s so difficult to find anything but a Hefe or Pils in most bars here, especially since there are such amazing Zwickls, Kellerbiers and Altbiers to be found in this country. most evenings i’d give my favorite leg for an amber colored brew… …and the Markthalle Neun in Kreuzberg has now officially answered my prayer with the introduction of Heidenpeter’s, a small«taproom» tucked into the back corner of the lively market hall. Heidenpeter’s beers are brewed on-site in the market hall’s cellar and while they currently only have 3 on tap, each is completely distinct: a Belgian Saison beer with flowery notes and two variations on the Pale Ale style, one of which is conditioned in whisky barrels and gives me the perfect high dose of hops-flavor, appeasing some of my nostalgia for American India Pale Ales. During market hall hours on Fridays and Saturdays, Johannes Heidenpeter(the brewer himself) pulls taps behind the small bar, happily discussing his beers with the growing roster of regulars, drawn back by his good mood and delicious+unique brews. the space in the corner has a smattering of seats and counters and so fills up quickly, but if you pay a deposit/Pfand, you can wander with your glass and look for the perfect food-pairing for your beer(my vote goes squarely to the new Big Stuff Smoked BBQ on the other side of the hall — their pork-belly sandwich is amazing!). Heidenpeter’s is only open the two days during the week, but you can counter bouts of withdrawal with the 1,5L bottles he has available for taking home+bringing back for re-filling. trust me, if you’re a fan of good beer, you won’t need an excuse to come back.
