—UPDATE— As of May 1, 2016, Factory has changed it’s membership model from coworking space to Soho House-esque«members club» at 50 €/per month. This means no more dedicated work spaces and the loss of most other amenities, so much of what I had previously written about may no longer apply. It prompted me to cancel my membership and move out. —ORIGINALREVIEW— Factory is arguably Berlin’s most high-profile tech space. Launched in 2014, the Mitte campus(there is now a second Factory in Kreuzberg) houses the Berlin offices of giants like Soundcloud, Twitter, Über and Pinterest, as well as several successful German startups. The coworking space on the ground floor opened in May 2015 is home to seed stage startups as well as powerhouses like Twilio, Netflix and — yes, full disclosure — Unilocal. Factory hosts several events each week, ranging from movie screenings to Pitch sessions to political events where leaders from all over the world interact with Factory residents and external guests. As a coworking member from the very beginning, I have to say that I was less than impressed initially. What the marketing material didn’t tell you was that the Wifi cut out every few minutes, printers weren’t operational, and other annoying glitches. All of that is resolved now, and Factory is growing in both scale and professionalism. Sleekly styled, the space is simply gorgeous. There is a huge kitchen/communal space that offers free hot and cold drinks as well as snacks. The large patio is perfect for working outdoors in summer. They are planning to erect another building over the course of 2016 that is supposed to house a full-size café and gym. Michelin-star awarded chef Tim Raue operates a restaurant out of the building which grants Factory member special discounted lunch menus starting at 9 €. Coworking memberships start at 300 €/month, but there’s also flex memberships if you’re not around all the time. One major disadvantage is that the space is only open from 9am — 9pm, so no all-nighters for those busy founders looking to scale their business Silicon Valley style. Personally, I’m travelling a lot for work, and when I’m in Berlin I spend a great deal of my time outside the office, so Factory serves all my needs and more for when I’m actually in the office.
