Berlin Hauptbahnhof

Über den Berliner Hauptbahnhof wurde schon viel berichtet und geschrieben, daher schenke ich mir mal die technischen Details.
Meine ganz persönlichen Erfahrungen sind bisher meist recht positiv.
Es gibt genug Platz im Gebäude und auch die Geschäfte sind recht gut sortiert. Vielen sagen ja er ist protzig und viel zu groß geraten… Ich bin der Meinung man hätte Ihn zumindest fertig bauen können, dann müsste ich manchmal nicht im Nassen aus dem Zug aussteigen… und ganz ehrlich wir sind die Hauptstadt des Landes und da darf man ruhig etwas protzig sein, oder?
Ich mag unseren Hauptbahnhof!

Tja, der «neue» Hauptstadtbahnhof. Er ist riesig, zugig, mit wenig Möglichkeiten zum Sitzen außerhalb der Gastronomie und extrem schlecht und verwirrend beschildert. Das Angebot zum Einkaufen und Essen ist aber breit gefächert. Ärgerlich für Reisenden sind die geringe Zahl an Schließfächern und die verwirrende Aufteilung und Anordnung der Rolltreppen. Noch dazu ist der Bahnhof recht weit vom eigentlichen Stadtzentrum entfernt. Einzig der Bundestag ist fußläufig nahe gelegen.

Dieser Bahnhof in der Hauptstadt ist sehr modern und neu. Es ist so groß das man beim ersten Ankunft leicht überfordert ist. Also man soll das erste mal ein bisschen Zeit mitnehmen, es gibt hier viel zu sehen. 4 Stockwerken habe ich gezählt. Als «fernreisende» kommt man ganz unten an und macht sich dann über die viel Rolltreppen ein Weg nach oben. Essen und einkaufen kann man hier sehr gut, und die Geschäften haben lange Öffnungszeiten.

Hier kommt man an, hier steigt man um, und das über mehrere Etagen. Die Architektur ist durchaus beeindruckend, vor allem der Blick von der oberen Ebene ganz nach unten. Man ist viel unterwegs, wenn man umsteigen muss, aber dank vieler Rolltreppen und Aufzüge ist das relativ schnell zu bewältigen. Aber man legt schon einiges an Wegstrecke zurück. Die Ausschilderung ist dabei nicht immer gut. Daneben ist der Hauptbahnhof noch ein mittleres Shoppingcenter, mit zahlreichen Geschäften und Lokalen. Was ich vermisse, ist eine Bahnhofsbuchhandlung, die über das übliche Angebot von Zeitungen und Taschenbüchern hinausgeht.

Fix your elevators! The very worst train station i’ve ever been. The architecture makes sure that people freeze in the winter because you’re basically expised to two windtunnels the whole time. The elevators are terrible: i always see frustrated people waiting endlessly. Try to come out of the S-​Bahn and then to find your connection: no sognage, no clear timetables. ‘Lost’ tourists who don’t get the concept of Bahn vs S-​Bahn. My advise is to apply proper signage (learn from other stations) and to close the vertigo-​evoking, hand-​freezing open patio soace. It’s ugly anyway

Dieser riesige, über mehrere Etagen angelegte Bahnhof war zwar erst drei mal Ziel meiner Reisen aber im Vergleich zu anderen Bahnhöfen fand ich diesen hier alleine schon wegen seiner Architektur von Anfang an besonders spannend. Allerdings ist das Bauwerk eher kühl und nüchtern gestaltet und die stimmige Farbgebung erhöhent den Eindruck.
Aufgrund der besonderen Bauweise sollte man als Ortsfremder genau auf die Beschilderungen achten bzw sich nicht scheuen die Infoschalter zu besuchen. Bis dato hatte ich immer Glück das der Bahnhof trotz oder grade wegen seiner Größe nie überfüllt war denn das Publikum *verläuft* sich quasi.
Ich würde mir mehr Sitzmöglichkeiten wünschen und insbesondere auf den Bahnsteigen sind diese recht dürftig. Wems gefällt kann sich aber locker einen ganzen Tag mit shoppen, sehen und gesehen werden und futtern verbringen. Man sollte beim Kaufen dran denken das hier das Preisniveau höher als in der Stadt ist.

THE best train station I’ve used, my trip to Berlin landed me at my hotel on a Sunday and had to run here by necessity. Why? As I unpacked, I realized I didn’t bring my Type C power adapter. Of course my hotel ran out. Ray of light: my hotel concierge mentioned that stores around the hotel were closed but drive, metro or bus it to the Hauptbanhof and you may be in luck. It was a quiet Sunday, streets were bare, snow just put a second coat of powder, the street I was on was still, not a soul, just me. I decided after a few steps (wimp Californian) to catch the bus– didn’t dare take my rental, half sleepy from an overnight flight. And after a 5 minutes bus ride, this monstrous edifice of a structure beamed me to go in even before the bus auto-​announcement boasted a soft «Hauptbahnof’. Got out, walked through the path paved by others and Whoa, you feel immenseness of space, and like a grand German aria, this building sent waves of in-​your-​face presence in my psyche, «This is Metropolis!» Awed. Paused and snapped out, I notice the buzzy atmosphere and a plethora of super delish cafés pastry shoppes, yup; I tried a few. You notice the well– lit, well signed train information in German and English. You can’t possibly catch the wrong train here unless you’re dyslexic like me.
You find everything in this train station from Virgin Store to drugstores, shoes, clothing, BackWerk– Sandwiches, Starbucks, Dunkin’ D, pastries, lots restos, more pastries, chocolate.
And sure ‘nuf found my adapter at a Virgin Store? Very Cool.
There are multiple levels to the Hauptbahnof for trains going to local and international destinations. Super busy, super efficient. This station is the height of German efficiency and convenience. When the time said train arrives in 2 minutes you see the train pull up right at 2 min, like clockwork, at the desired time. When in Berlin, you will most likely end up here… in wonderment.
Moral of the story: If you’re in Berlin and cannot get to a mall and are looking for anything from food, dining, pastries, curios and travel items and it happens to be a Sunday when everything is closed, take the bus, U or S-​bahn to the Hauptbahnhof.
Visits: a few, like every day I was in Berlin but forgot to check in :(
Tip: Buy your metro ticket religiously here. There are no turnstiles into or out of subway. Even though it looks like it’s on an honor system, think again. Pay your fare either at a Yellow metro booth or machine. There are cameras everywhere and you will get a violation ticket if you try to catch a free ride. Just sayin’ first time visit New Yorkers!
Restrooms are super clean like Japan, but have to have Euro coins on hand. Ya gotta plunk to get into the restrooms.

Toller Bahnhof, moderne Architektur, aufgrund der Größe wenig Hektik. Man findet hier sprichwörtlich alles.

Es kann nervtötend sein, wenn im letzten Moment die Gleise gewechselt werden und Ansage und Anzeige hinterherhinken. Ansonsten ob der Größe recht weite Wege, man mus sich ein bisschen zurechtfinden. Alles modern und barrierefrei, wie sich das für die Hauptstadt gehört. Wer Zeit hat, die Architektur zu bestaunen, der freut sich über luftige und helle hallen. An einem sonnigen Morgen funkelt und glitzert alles.
Die Läden im Zwischengeschoss decken den Reisebedarf ab, die üblichen Ketten, man kriegt, was man braucht.

Mi fanatismo por la cultura alemana se acrecienta día a día, todo funciona tan bien y tan prolijito que me muero de emoción cada vez que conozco algo nuevo. Esta fue mi primera vez en la estación central de trenes de Berlin y, al igual que cada estación grande de este país, tiene todo lo que te imagines… menos WIFI.
Si, el único punto bajo que le encontré es que si queres tener una conexión a internet si o si tenes que ir a Starbucks o algún otro bar, es muy tercermundista estar ahi y que no haya wifi gratuito como en los aeropuertos, así que no queda otra que pasear por todo el lugar con el celular en mano buscando una señal.
Dejando esto de lado, todo esta impecablemente señalizado. La estación tiene mucha variedad de lugares para comer, librerías y locales de ropa. Es nueva, no se de cuando es pero se nota que esta estrenada hace pocos años, y el mantenimiento es muy evidente. Todo limpio.
Lamentablemente los pocos bancos que tienen estan en los andenes, por lo que si hace frío o calor y queres esperar sentado tenes que pasarla mal. Ademas son pocos. Angela, toma nota de las mejores para la próxima!

Berlins Hauptbahnhofes nicht nur durch seine Größe sehr imposant. Erhält auch viele Geschäfte für einen Einkaufsbummel bereit. Anfangs muss man sich ein wenig zurechtfinden. Aber ansonsten ist das ein wirklich tolles Drehkreuz. Von dort aus kommt man auch schön auf die Straße des 17. Juni wo viele Veranstaltungen stattfinden. In ein paar Jahren fährt hier auch die U-​Bahn Linie fünf los übers Brandenburger Tor bis nach Marzahn. Der Berliner Hauptbahnhof ist schon selbst eine Sehenswürdigkeit. Und gegenüber ist übrigens auch eine tolle Beach Bar

Die Baugeschichte des Berliner Hauptbahnhofes… wie in Berlin bei Verkehrsprojekten schon beinahe üblich eine nahezu unendliche Geschichte voller Irrungen und Wirrungen.
Unmittelbar nach der deutschen Wiedervereinigung wurde 1990 ein neuer Hauptbahnhof als Leuchtturm– und Prestigeobjekt für die Bundeshauptstadt geplant.
So wurde geplant, Pläné verworfen und wieder umgeplant und schließlich konnte man sich auf einen Entwurf einigen.
Es sollte ein sogenannter «Turmbahnhof» werden mit viel Glas und Stahl, schön stylish, übersichtlich und hochmodern. Und natürlich preisgünstig und termingerecht gebaut.
Naja, aus «preisgünstig» und «termingerecht» wurde es dann nichts.
Bei Baubeginn 1995 waren Kosten von 700 Mio € geplant bei einer Bauzeit bis 2000. Eingeweiht wurde der Bahnhof dann aber erst 2006 bei Kosten von 1,2 Mrd. €… also doppelt so lang bei doppelt so hohen Kosten. Aber zumindest ist er in Betrieb. ;)
Wenn man als Zugreisender aus München im Berliner Hauptbahnhof ankommt, trifft man meist im Tiefbahnhof ein. Dort unten ist es recht duster, obwohl ja auch das Dach aus Glas besteht. Dennoch dringt das Sonnenlicht bis nicht ganz nach unten durch. So wirkt es doch sehr ungemütlich.
Um vom Untergeschoss nach oben an die Luft zu kommen hat man 2 Alternativen: Entweder man wartet an einem Aufzug eine gefühlte Ewigkeit oder man nutzt einen der 2 Rolltreppen, die aber keine direkte Verbindung nach oben bieten. Man kommt erst in ein Zwischengeschoss, von dem man dann mittels einer anderen Rolltreppe in die Hauptebene kommt. Ich finde das für die Bahnkunden eher suboptimal, aber so führt die Deutsche Bahn ihre Kunden einmal durch den ganzen Bahnhof und damit an den vielen Geschäften vorbei. Auch né Art Verkaufsförderung.
Außerdem finde ich die Wegführung etwas verwirrend. Wer zum ersten Mal in Berlin mit dem Zug ist und mit der S– oder U-​Bahn weiter muss, steht erst mal verwirrt da. Welches Gleis ist wo und wie komm ich da hin? Vielleicht gibt sich das, wenn man hier öfter ist, aber ein «Newbie» wird allein gelassen.
Aber wenn man sein Gleis gefunden hat, kommt man von hier mit der S-​Bahn in alle Richtungen, mit der U-​Bahn aber nur 1,8 km weit. Die U55, die hier ihren Ausgangspunkt hat, verbindet als weltweit kürzeste U-​Bahnlinie den Hauptbahnhof mit dem Brandenburger Tor.
Der Berliner Hauptbahnhof… als Gesamtresultat kann man fast sagen: «Es kreisste der Berg, heraus kam né Maus»
Aber da in Berlin ja nie ein Bauwerk fertig gebaut wird haben wir noch Chancen, dass es noch besser wird ;)

Oh how I hate this station. It’s near nothing, literally nothing. Whatever or whomever you want to visit in Berlin is probably miles away from the exceptionally ugly Hauptbahnhof.
Also, due to the moronic construction of the whole thing it is super windy and cold inside. The escalators are designed to take you from point a to point b across as many shops as possible. So disgusting. An elevator might help you get to your destination quicker, they are very few though.
The Kaiser’s supermarket just above track 1 and 2 is the only ray of sunlight in there. Get your supplies and real german food&drink souveniers there!

.. Ich war noch nie im Berlin.. dieser Satz galt bei mir nun bis März*15, und war richtig gespannt, wie der Hauptstadt meine Reiseemotionen beeinflusst.
. Und gleich beim ankommen fiel die meine Klappe regelrecht runter~ der Hauptbahnhof wirkte auf mich wie ‘n riesiges Hotel! nur dass anstatt die Zimmern die Züge auf 3 – 4 Etagen herumdüsten.
. Überall viele Polizisten, überall sehr sauber, überall sehr gute Info über die Reiseverbindungen.
. Nur shoppingsmässig, da ist der heimatliche Kölner Hauptbahnhof doch! ‘n Tick besser. Im Berlin, da sind so paar Geschäfte vorhanden, von jeden etwas. Als Kölnerin, hat es mich nun gar nicht beeindruckt. ;-)

There are many way to get to Berlin, planes, trains, buses. For me, the first time I got here was by train. And I was so impress by this railway station. It really rare to see such as modern and beautiful design for a railway station. Beside that I was also amazed how the system works here. There were many different trains with different destination, from the top to the bottom. Well, imagine the trains just come and go upon you, that’s kinda cool.
Berlin main station, It used to be a stop on the Berlin S-​Bahn suburban railway temporarily named Berlin Hauptbahnhof-​Lehrter Bahnhof. It is now classified as a Category 1 station, there other three station in this category in Berlin. There are Berlin Gesundbrunnen, Berlin Südkreuz and Berlin Ostbahnhof.
Although this station might looks very new and modern now, it actually got quite a long history behind. If you are interested at it, just have a look online.
For me, this station really caught me. I found it really special and charming. Haha, I know, I know. Not many people care about how a train station like, more about how it functioning. Well, although the station is so big, it got a really good sign system, very easy to understand and get around. There are many shops and cafes and fast food around as well. For passengers who have to wait, but can’t really go to faraway from the station, it is kinda nice. From here also can take the S-​Bahn service to get to popular places in Berlin, pretty convenient. Just remember to buy your ticket and validate it. There is also a information center at the back for the visitors, quite helpful.

This is by far my favorite train station in Europe. Modern, clean, very easy to navigate and customer friendly. All of this virtues make spending time at Berlin Houptbahnhof very nice. There are many stores and restaurants you can spend time at. If the weather is nice you can even walk from there to the city center. There are always cabs on both sides of the building. Train platforms are clearly marked and easily reachable.

Naja ist halt ein Bahnhof, die Wege sind unergründlich, als ich dort mal ein Auto gemietet hatte, oh weia… die Auswahl an Geschäften ist wirklich okay bis gut.
Ordentlich geht, weil neu… die U Bahn Anbindung, spitze, die U55, die wirklich sinnloseste U Bahn Berlins.

OK place to have something to eat during the Christmas… otherwise not so pleasant.

I love the shopping there and you find really good food and snack options. The coffee bar in the food court is excellent.

Ein schöner Hauptbahnhof, welcher durch seine moderne und offene Architektur glänzt. Lichtdurchflutet und filigran würde ich das Gebäude beschreiben. Immer wieder bewundere ich das Gebäude, als würden die Gleise und Bahnsteige quer durch die Halle durch ihre Leichtigkeit «schweben», als würde einfach alles nichts wiegen. Faszinierend ist ebenfalls die Ansicht der Bahnen von Weitem wenn es dunkel wird. So sieht man oftmals die leuchtenden Züge durch die gläserne Fassade.
Es ist wohl der größte und modernste Kreuzungsbahnhof Europas und dementsprechend durch 3 S-​Bahn Linien, einer U-​Bahn Linie, 20 Bus-​Linien und ungefähr 18 Regional-​Bahn-​Linien erreichbar.
Und gerade deswegen erscheint dieser Bahnhof nicht nur als modernes Zentrum der Fortbewegung und Reise, sondern auch ganz zeitgemäß als Möglichkeit noch Einkäufe zu erledigen und sich mit Freunden zu treffen.
Ich persönlich liebe ja moderne Architektur wie diese, bei der man sieht was alles möglich ist und doch so leicht bei solch einer Größe wirken kann. An dieser Stelle ein großen Lob an den Architekten Meinhard von Gerkan.
Durch die Brillanz vergisst man glatt, dass es dort mal einen Stahlträger-​Bruch gab und der Bahnhof eine Zeit lang als unsicher galt.

This main station is like a space-​age hub out of the Jetsons. Everything is nicely labeled. The DB has an information desk upstairs. Great train station to come into.

Ziemlich stressiger, grosser und unübersichtliches Gebäude mit den handelsüblichen Bäckereien, Drogerien und Buchläden.
Das sind keine spezifischen Hauptbahnhof-​Eigenschaften, sondern die meisten Bahnhöfe in Metropolen sind so.
Ganz oben fährt die S-​Bahn (wenn sie denn mal fährt…) und ganz unten im Tiefgeschoss ist alles ein wenig ruhiger, dort fahren die Züge Richtung Hamburg oder München, Prag, Dresden und so weiter.
Einige Berlin-​Besucher (aus anderen Staaten) teilten mir mit, dass sie das beleuchtete, über allem schwebende «Bombardier”-Logo geschmacklos finden. Ich fand heraus, es hat gar nichts mit Krieg oder Waffen zu tun, sondern es handelt sich um Bahntechnik. Trotzdem seltsam, welches Unternehmen gibt sich solch einen Namen?
Ich hatte mal «a damned good coffee» (so würde Agent Cooper aus «Twin Peaks» sagen) aus einer Bäckerei am Hauptbahnhof. Das fliesst aber nicht in die Bewertung ein: o)

La gare centrale de Berlin est très spacieuse et agréable. Idéale aux niveaux des transports, permettant de faire toutes les liaisons intra et inter-​ville.
Devons-​nous aussi souligner sa modernité et praticabilité avec ses ascenseurs partout?
Un peu labyrinthique, mais vous apprécierez les nombreux commerces dont les petits imbiss pour prendre la dernière currywurst avant le départ!

I enjoyed my visit here. The food was about a (⁸⁄₁₀) but the wifi wasn’t working which was vital since i had no idea how to get back to my hostel without it.

The design is kept kind of compact as it is in a multi-​story concept and not like Cologne for example that is more the wide kind of station.
You have lots of options to get somewhere else from/​to here.
It has a descent food court, no McD’s though.
As lots of corners of Berlin it has a lot of concrete around and of course its an ongoing construction site. But that’s normal.
I like the Glass façade and ceiling and that the center of the station is open from top to bottom, so regardless of where you’re standing you get a bit of natural light which is good.

Is it any wonder why you don’t need a car in Berlin?
Part of the vast and efficient public transport system it’s fairly new and BIG, but kinda in the middle of nowhere — It’s a good 15 min walk from Brandenburger Tor. It has everything though from cafes, pubs, restaurants, supermarkets, chemists/​drug stores, florists, boutiques, etc… You can spend a good few hours here and not get bored.
It’s set on several levels, so trains zigzag over one another and maybe worth a look if you’re passing by on the s-​bahn or need to transfer. There are several hotels situated close by and a couple of beach bars are handily placed if you need to wait for a train :)

Nachdem ich doch jetzt einige Male öfter als meinem «Erstbericht» hierzu am Berliner Hbf war, muss ich meinen Bericht einfach ein bisschen aktualisieren.
Zunächst einmal: So mancher moderne Fernbahnhof der Bahn ist in erster Linie funktional. Und hat wenig Atmosphäre. Abschreckende Beispiele hierfür sind etwa der Bahnhof Kassel-​Wilhelmshöhe und der Fernbahnhof am Frankfurter Flughafen.
Doch es geht auch anders, vom Ambiente und der Atmosphäre her. Ein grundsätzlich gelungenes Beispiel hierfür ist für mich der Berliner Hauptbahnhof. Bei einem Handelsgeschäft würde man sicherlich von einem Flagship Store sprechen.
Die Architektur gefällt mir, es gibt auch relativ viel Lichteinfall– und wenn man sich zu orientieren weiß, dann beschränken sich weite Wege eher auf die notwendigen.
Denn, und dies kann man nun wirklich kritisieren, weite Wege hat man hier mitunter zurückzulegen. Vor allem kann dies schlimm sein, da es hier m.E. zu wenig Aufzüge gibt bzw. nicht alle Aufzüge überall hinfahren (kann z.B. wichtig sein, wenn man in die Ebene –2 muss). Und wenn dann Rolltreppen außer Betrieb sind… Dann muss man u.U. einige Meter laufen, um mit Gepäck und Kriegsverletzungen nicht allzu außer Atem am Bahnsteig anzukommen. Die Aufzugssituation ist für mich einer der wesentlichen Kritikpunkte.
Ein anderer sind die Nahverkehrsanschlüsse. Sicherlich, es fahren hier Regionalzüge. Und die S-​Bahn-​Linien der Stadtbahnstrecke (S 5, S 7, S 75) — aber eine S-​Bahn-​Anbindung in Nord-​Süd-​Richtung wird erst gebaut. Und in Berlin kann dies ja bekanntlich dauern… Ein U-​Bahn-​Anschluss ist bislang nur mit dem Fragment U 55, das ja in wenigen Jahren in die U 5 aufgehen soll, gewährleistet. Dies ist wirklich deutlich verbesserungsfähig und –bedürftig.
Auch Sitzgelegenheiten sind in diesem nicht wirklich kleinen Bahnhof eher rar gesät.
Bei den Läden gibt es einen durchaus interessanten Mix, der sich nicht nur auf Bahnhofs-​Essentials beschränkt– aber überwiegend aus Filialisten besteht. So gibt es hier z.B. keinen lokalen/​regionalen Bäcker, was ich sehr schade finde.
Gleichwohl: Irgendwie bin ich hier gerne. Und ich war mittlerweile so oft hier, dass ich in der Regel gleich dort hin komme, wo ich auch hin möchte.

Top — in Hinblick auf Einkaufsoptionen und gastronomischen Möglichkeiten; hier wird wirklich alles angeboten. ich bevorzuge den Asiatischen Imbiss mit vielen Sitzmöglichkeiten oder aber den Einkauf im Supermarkt — dort wird alles angeboten.
Auch shoppen kann man, wenn der ICE eh mal wieder lässig mit 180 Minuten Verspätung kommt.
Kritikpunkt — hierzu gibt es allerdings auf keinem Bahnhof der Welt eine adäquate Lösung: Der Weg zum WC ist weit und der Besuch dann mit € 1, — teuer. Aber immerhin sind die sanitären Anlagen sauber.
Wenn es eilig ist, ist es besser, man kennt sich hier sehr gut aus — der Weg zum richtigen Gleis auf der Tiefebene muss erst mal gefunden werden. Bin schon einige Male erst in aller letzter Sekunde am Zug angekommen, obschon ich eigentlich glaubte, mir bliebe ausreichend Zeit.

Der Hauptbahnhof. Ich fasse zusammen. Verwirrend, schlecht ausgeschildert. Anschlußzüge starten IMMER von der maximal entferntesten Stelle auf der anderen Seite des Bahnhofes.
Überteuertes Essen überall. Ein Kaisers-​Supermarkt für die verzweifelten Sonntags-​Einkäufer. Apotheke mit Billigkopfschmerztabletten für 8 Euro das 10er Pack.
Das schlechteste PARKHAUS der Welt, denn keiner findet es und die Einfahrhöhe hält teilweise schon einen schnöden Jeep ab.

Trotz erstem düsterem Eindruck (kaum Sonne im inneren) erscheint der Bahnhof hell und freundlich. Mit reichlich Geschäften um die Wartezeit zu verkürzen. Die Mode und Technik Läden sind neben Büchern und Zeitschriften Angebote der Guten Seite, demgegenüber die Spar-​Angebote bei Essen und Trinken, die man sich oft sparen sollte. Allerdings habe ich noch nicht alle Angebote getestet. Kann sich also noch verbessern :-)
Super coole Architektur, mit den Bahnsteigen auf sehr vielen Ebenen. Sehenswert, mittels Rundgang mal alle Facetten erkunden. Trotz allem etwas dunkel geraten.
Wer es eilig hat, vorher informieren und Fahrstuhl benutzen, sonst ‘nen Snicker einpacken (wenn’s mal länger dauert) Die Wege von S-​Bahn zum ICE können lang sein.
Toiletten sind vorhanden und sauber, sowie benutzbar, auch keine Normalität auf deutschen Bahnhöfen.

Ausnahmsweise mal ein Bahnhof mit gepflegtem Umfeld.

I was lucky enough to visit Berlin last Easter. Easter did come early last year but it came a little bit of a shock to find it was snowing on me on Easter Sunday!
German cities have amazing public transportation systems, which are brilliantly integrated. The main rail network is meshed with the U Bahn, S Bahn, trams and buses
The main train station, Hauptbahnhof is the terminus for the cross country and cross continental trains to and from Berlin. As expected, it’s well linked into the city’s own transport network
The station itself has a futuristic feel, with a lot of metalwork and glass and an open structure, enabling you to see up and down through the various levels oft the station. With many floors, escalators and lifts, you’ll probably have to make use otf the many diagrams scattered around the station to help you navigate your way around
The station proved a lifesaver on Easter Sunday as it was the only place with shops open, enabling me to pick up some supplies. There’s everything from fast food to a supermarket to a pharmacy to be found here
I caught my train to Cologne from here. I was impressed that the e-​ticket I printed out 3 weeks before my trip displayed the departure platform. What a great contrast to Brtiish trains stations or companies like New Jersey transit, who don’t display a platform until 10 minutes before departure, causing a huge crush of humanity at the last minute
As expected, my train arrived exactly on time with announcements and signs in German and in English

Ich mag den Bahnhof. Er zeigt was Berlin hat oder auch ist: Viel Protz!
Der Hauptbahnhof ist nie wirklich fertig geworden. Noch heute fehlen Bahnsteigsüberdachungen und S-​Bahnanschlüsse.
Die Parkplatzsituation an sich und die Zufahrt zum Bahnhof sind einfach nur lächerlich.
Es fehlt an ausreichenden Fahrradständern vor dem Bahnhof. Das Chaos vor dem Bahnhof zwischen Taxen, Wartenden und Hilfesuchenden ist der stressige Wahnsinn. Kurz mal Anhalten und Halten, zum Ein– oder Ausladen, ist hier unmöglich! Der Taxistand ist zu klein.
Eine gute Beschilderung vor dem Bahnhof fehlt.
Ich finde zum Beispiel den Leipziger Bahnhof schöner und auch besser.
Fazit: Berlin wiedermal nur teures Mittelmaß!

Der Hauptbahnhof ist schon sehr beeindruckend. Auch da er unheimlich teuer war, fallen deshalb negative Dinge besonders auf. Die Anbindung an den restlichen ÖPNV besonders an den alten Westteil ist nach wie vor lückenhaft, so gibt es keine direkte U Bahn Anbindung !
Die Einfahrt zur Tiefgarage ist nach wie vor sehr schlecht ausgeschildert und kaum zu finden, dafür aber 15 Minuten freies Parken. Auf meiner persönlichen Wunschliste wären: Freies WLAN und freie car2go Parkplätze entweder in der Tiefgarage oder vor dem Gebäude.

Maybe it is just me, but I just love this building. It has several levels both above and underground. And it has several platforms for trains to pass by and stop.
I’ve always passed by this station when I am on the S-​Bahn, and also whenever I would take a long-​distance train ride. Most recently, I passed by this one when I went to Niedersachsen for a business trip.
The platforms are well-​marked, the lighting is sufficient, the facilities are clean. The shopping area is very well-​organized, and there is enough space to handle the amount of travelers that pass by this building. And the building is swanky too. Honestly, of all the main train stations I have seen for different cities, this one is the best one out there.

Une gare spacieuse et très propre, ça change des gares parisiennes !
Vous y trouverez votre bonheur avec la multitude de boutiques à chaque étage.
Nous n’avions pas pris de train mais nous avons passé un très bon moment dans le Dunkin Donuts de cette gare :)

We took a three-​hour train ride from Warnemünde to this station on a shore excursion from NCL Norwegian Star. It was a pleasant ride and very comfortable. It was easy to negotiate the busy Hauptbahnhof coming and going. No problems. Wish the US had as much effiient mass transit as do the Europeans.

I took the train from here to Amsterdam and have to say that the experience was very smooth, reliable and organized. And that is what you need when you are traveling in foreign lands.
The station is pretty big, but very easy to figure out. You’ve got lots of shops here, so you can kill time easily if you arrive early (as I usually do).
The Germans are crazy about Dunkin Donuts, which is funny to me, since it is so plain to me. I mean in New York, there is a DD on every corner. But I saw Germans buying boat loads of donuts and then getting on trains to other destinations with their carb loaded treats. Pretty ironic, but hey, it’s cool.
I was able to find my platform easily and the time tables for trains are all computerized and everything just ran smoothly. My train came on time and everyone got on without a fight or hassle. Tons of space for luggage, so no worries even if you have lots of luggage.
Beautiful architecture in the station and just a good, solid, clean train station. Glad to know this place exist and I am sure when I come through Berlin again, I will be using this place again.

La plus grande gare d’Europe & pas qu’un peu.
C’est gigantesque, c’est très bien desservie par les transports en commun & c’est à quelques minutes du Reichtag.
On y retrouve toutes les plus grandes chaînés internationales, utile lors d’une arrivée un peu précipitée en gare. Un peu trop de junk-​food… mais c’est le jeu de ce genre de mixe entre Centre Commercial et Gare multi-​modale.
Un bel endroit où prendre son train pour l’Europe.

This huge, clean, very modern station reminds me of an American mall. The layout is similar to the gallerias of my youth, and there’s also the fact that they’ve got the Starbucks, the Burger King, the McDonald’s, the Pizza Hut and all sorts of other chain bullshit. Luckily, there’s also a currywurst stand, a joint selling lobster and other seafood, and even full-​on grocery stores if you need to get something to eat.
Before we got here, we were warned that it was horribly confusing. I’m not sure why. I honestly had no problem finding my train, despite being a stupid American. I suppose it’s all relative though; perhaps other German stations are far easier to navigate… but compared to Prague’s clusterfuck of a main station, I think this place is a dream come true.
That said, I do have some minor complaints about HBF Berlin. They are twofold:
1. You have to pay to use the bathroom. Personally, I just think that’s bullshit. What if you don’t have a euro, but you do have explosive diarrhea from eating nothing but schnitzel and sausage for three days? That’s a bad situation that… I wouldn’t know anything about. (But once I borrowed a euro from a very nice gentleman, I did find out that the bathroom was vastly cleaner than free public bathrooms in the US. So there’s that.)
2. There was a wait at the information center because the woman on staff was getting her makeup done by what I’m assuming was a professional makeup artist (judging by the huge case full of tools and products). Seriously. At first I assumed she was going on camera, but no. After she was all set, she just came and sat down at the desk and took the next person in line. I agree, people should look their best before speaking to me, but this seemed excessive.
Good train station, though.

Quelle magnifique gare non loin du Reichtag ! On m’a dit une fois qu’elle ressemblait une locomotive, je n’en ai pas vraiment l’impression mais peu importe. La plus belle gare moderne que je n’ai visitée. Je n’y ai pas pris le train, mais j’y ai cependant fais un tour. Elle abrite une multitude de petites restaurants de type fast-​food ou non.
Apercevant un millies cookies je me suis empressé d’y acheté une boîte de cookies. Décoration superbe pour les fêtes de noël. On se croirait dans un vrai centre commercial si on n’apercevrait pas les trains défiler silencieusement.

Moi, je trouve que cette gare est réussie! Grande, aérée, tout en verre. On se dirige facilement et tout est moderne.
Quand on arrive de cette gare, on est accueilli dehors par de grand espace vert, un canal qu’on traverse pour se retrouver devant le Bundestag. Bref, belle gare et bel emplacement.

Mon bâtiment préféré du Berlin moderne:
L’architecture en verre et minces poutres d’acier, donne une impression de transparence et une couleur bleutée à la structure du bâtiment.
Achevé en 2006, cette construction remplit bien l’objectif de donner à Berlin une apparence plus moderne. Le ICE (Inter City Express «TGV allemand») avec ses formes futuristes et élancées y trouve pleinement sa place.
La Hauptbahnhof peut aussi être un lieu de restauration (boulangeries, snacks, fast-​food, Döner-​Kebab, asiatiques et restaurants classiques) ou de shopping (de nombreuses boutiques).
