Amar

My friend and I were in the area and decided to try Amar given that it seemed like a popular place to go on a Saturday night. I enjoyed spending a couple of hours here; the service was really relaxed and our meals were what you’d expect from a reputable Indian restaurant. The chicken biriyani and chicken himalaya were both solid rice dishes.
In the future I would come back with a few more friends; this restaurant seems more like a weekend dinner and drinks spot before heading to the clubs than a weeknight affair.

Ich kenne das Amar seit der Eröffnung vor ca. 10 Jahren. Heute war ich zum ersten Mal nach ca. 7 Jahren wieder da und — um es kurz zu sagen — ich war total begeistert. Es gibt in Berlin keinen bessern Inder. Toller Service, extrem leckeres Essen und viele leckere Geschenke aus der Küche. Absolute Empfehlung!

Hier ist es absolut lecker. Sind oft hier gewesen. Immer wieder top. Personal, supernett. Sogar mit Hund kann man kommen. Wir kommen wieder.

The biggest issue here was our garlic naan. I’m sure it was good, I mean… Its consistency and softness was great. But I couldn’t taste the garlic… Maybe, just maybe, because it was infused in weed. Yes, you heard me. It tasted pot. It smelled like it, tasted like it and the smell stuck to the fingers several hours later. Just like I would’ve had a blunt myself. No exaggeration.
Now to be fair, it’s not in the actual recipe. I’m not sure what did and didn’t happen in the kitchen, but the server definitely had a joint before he came in with the bread. No doubt. Worse than my food experience in Amsterdam, but a throwback to my visit nevertheless.
One must not forget that this server was in a good mood, swift and pleasant. I give you that, my friend. Roll on. Pun intended.
Overall experience: I enjoy Indian food. In fact, I love Indian. In comparison to my previous restaurant experiences this was good. I’ve had a lot worse, but I’ve had 5 star Indian too. We had lamb korma and type of lamb spinach curry that I cannot remember the name of. No complaints, the meat was tender and good. Swift service, good atmosphere, pleasant staff.
Takes ONLY CASH though, sigh.

Überbordende Karte, viele vegatarische Gerichte, aber auch Fleisch, freundliche, schnelle Bedienung, Menü mit Vorsüppchen, Salat, Reis und Hauptgericht für rund 7 Euro. Ich gehe häufig hier Mittag Essen und habe etliche Gerichte ausprobiert — und alles schmeckt!

Never again, the chicken did not tasted like chicken and same for the mango sauce. Barman bumped on me without even apologizing, I don’t recommend this place.

I’ve been through this place a lot of times and found it really appealing, now I understand that’s it actually only a look and maybe a catchy tourist place.
I’ve been there with four friends, they took a plate for four people with naan, and I took a «snack» which was composed of «marinated» potatoes, with rice on side (fractured too). We also all took some cocktails.
The service was very average, first pretty nice, it became quickly hard to catch the waiter. First we had to call them like 3 times to order, then I actually had to go to them to order a drink, and finally they ended up completely forgetting us. They were nice and smily, but just not very efficient at some point.
The plate for four was just way too small and my friends regretted not to have taken it for two instead of four, even more since it costed 17 €.
My experience was probably even worse. I wanted a small thing and no too expensive so I only looked in the snacks, the problem is that all of them except two were fried. The two others were «marinated». Being celiac, I had no other choice than to choose a marinated one, which I didn’t really care about in the first place. The thing is that 15 minutes later, came an amazing plate of… fried potatoes. One of my friends who was german then explained to the waiter that since I was unable to eat gluten this wasn’t right for me and that it was written «marinated» on the menu and not fried for this one so that they should just take it back to the kitchen and probably let me order something not fried. 5 minutes later came another water (obviously the chief) with the exact same plate. He claimed that I ordered that and now I had to take it, that I should have asked before and that «anyway» there is no gluten in this fried plate.
Since I had no other choice and no other thing to eat I ate a few potatoes of this plate, but I really really doubt that this was true, which is I think a big deal. I don’t blame restaurant which doesn’t have gluten free options, but why put marinated when it’s fried and everything else on the menu that are fried are truly noted as so ?
Anyway, I wouldn’t recommend this place, either for the service, nor for the drink (which were pretty bad too) and the food. There are far better places to go around there.

Been to India ten times so I can tell the food was just ok. Nothing special. 20 euro for a meal is too expensive here.
Service is ok. No need to say that the rice is free of charge. Try somewhere else.

Ich hätte mal lieber auf die ganzen Beiträge bei Unilocal hören sollen, bevor ich mich hierher begab. 3 Sterne bei 116 Beiträgen sprechen schon eine eindeutige Sprache. Aber… ich wurde hierher eingeladen, deshalb wiollte ich mich nicht wehren und aus der Runde kannte keiner das Amar bis zu diesem Zeitpunkt.
Fangen wir mit den guten Punkten an:
— Man bekommt einen kleinen Saft als Begrüßung an den Tisch. Was drin ist, weiß ich nicht.
— Die Preise sind einigermaßen okay, nicht zu teuer, aber auch kein Low-​Price-​Food.
— Die Bedienung ist freundlich.
Und das war es auch schon irgendwo.
Für mich neutrale bis negative Punkte:
— Trotz Vorbestellung war der Tisch nicht klar deklariert. Wenn es um sechs schon voll gewesen wäre, hätten wir wohl in die Röhre geguckt.
— Drinnen ist es ziemlich dunkel. Leute mit Sehproblemen werden ihren Spaß haben die Karte zu lesen. So war es keine Seltenheit, dass die gute Handy-​LED zum Lesen genutzt wurde.
— Einige Gerichte werden noch heiß brutzelnd an den Tisch gebracht. Wenn aber mehrere Leute sowas bestellen, wird die Luft mal schnell eng in der Hütte. Auf ein kurzes Lüften kam das Personal nicht von allein.
— Obwohl es gegen sechs noch nicht voll war, hatte die Bedienung schon Schwierigkeiten, die richtigen Getränke an die jeweiligen Tische zu bringen. Mein MaiTai war auch gepunscht, aber was habe ich auch erwartet…
Was absolut gar nicht geht:
— Während des Essen wird mir von Personalseite halb ins Essen reingegrabscht und Geschirr, was augenscheinlich nicht mehr benutzt wird, weggenommen. Finde ich ein Unding.
— Es wird nicht nochmal gefragt, ob man noch was trinken möchte oder ob alles in Ordnung ist.
— Als einer Freundin das viertelvolle Glas Ginger Ale weggenommen werden sollte, musste sie auch mal laut einschreiten.
— Als einem Kellner dann eine Schale mit Essen runterfiel, wurde nur so lapida gefragt, ob alles okay sei. Es würde auch einen Schnaps auf Kosten des Hauses geben, aber den bekommt jeder und nicht nur wir, weil der Reis in die tasche einer Mitstreiterin fiel.
— Die Krönung des Ganzen war dann, dass uns unaufgefordert die Rechnung gebracht wurde. Das hatte Rausschmiss-​Charakter. Und als wir noch über Gutscheine was reduzieren konnten, hatte sich ein Kellner pissig, uns die Rechnung da zu lassen. Ich will doch sehen, was ich bezahlt habe. Als Konsequenz gab es auch nur wenig Trinkgeld.
Tja, ich kann den Laden nicht empfehlen. Geschmacklich war das Essen okay, aber das scheinbar einfachste konnten sie auch nicht richtig zubereiten, den Reis. Und der gehört irgendwie zum essen dazu und sollte zumindest vernünftig gekocht sein. Hähnchen wird auch nur noch gewürfelt. Naja, genug Umsatz machen sie trotzdem, da der Laden wirklich voll war.

Huh? Only 3 star? Thats totally unfair!
This place deserves 5 star! And I will tell you why:
When we first got in, the staff welcomed us with a pink and cute welcome drinks. They were really polite and kept calling us ma’am. We were a group and we ordered different dishes and we all enjoyed it to the max! The menu for both drinks and food were great. They even had Indian beer.
The dish I ordered (which I will never going to forget the taste) was Chicken Mango. The most tender chicken filet on earth in the tastiest mango sauce ever!
Prices and the location also wins my vote.
At the end, after we asked for our recites, they gave us this really tasty caramel drinks.
(I guess since they offer the welcome drinks then that was the «Goodbye drink»?)

Das Lieblingsrestaurant von meinem Mann und mir. Wir hatten hier unser 2. Date hier.
Es ist ein typisches Szene-​Restaurant. Ob es für jedermann was ist, muss jeder für sich entscheiden.
Der Chef und ebenso auch die Mitarbeiter sind sehr aufmerksam. Ist der Tisch schmutzig, wird sauber gemacht, ist der Reis alle, wird sofort neuer gebracht. Man kämpft halt um jeden Kunden. Was auch verständlich ist, bei der Konkurrenz. Hier wimmelt es ja nur von Restaurant, Bars und Cafés.
Das Essen schmeckt sehr gut, wir sind hier öfters und ich hatte noch nie was zu beanstanden.
Wer auf Szene und gutes Essen, was nicht all zu teuer ist steht, ist hier gut aufgehoben.
Von mir 5 Sterne voll verdient…

Wie schon gesagt, meine Freundin und mich verbindet, dass wir hier damals essen waren, kurz bevor wo zusammen gekommen sind, daher verbindet dieser Laden natürlich auch gute Erinnerung.
So jetzt zum Essen! Das ist eine gute übersichtliche Auswahl an indischen Gerichten und was mich interessiert ist, das sie auch eine gute und geschmackvolle Auswahl an vegetarischen Gerichten haben.
Das Interieur ist typisch indisch mit Buddhastatuen etc., halt Alles was man erwartet. Und zum Schluss die Preise, die sind im mittleren Preissegment, also mittlerweile schon Standard. Alles in Allem ist der Laden eine Empfehlung und einen Besuch wert, nicht nur zum Abend, sondern auch zum Businesslunch!

Really good Indian food for a reasonable price. The service was great, they came out with house fruit juice before the meal and a small shot of a thicker mango juice after the meal free of charge!

I was here twice — once at noon and once at night… The place has totally different vibes
Prices are good, business lunch is very worthy and there are many options to choose from and if you feel like having a cocktail at night — you can consider having one here, had a Mai tai and a really good time :)

Nichts wo ich mit jemanden zu einen besonderen Anlass gehen würde aber für Mittagessen kann man schon sagen das es ganz lecker ist. Service ist auch nett, Portionen klein aber ausreichend. Geschmacklich meistens gut abgestimmt und würzig. Qualität befriedigend.
Der Salat ist leider meistens nicht frisch, schon angetrocknet und hat so rein garnichts mit indisch zu tun.
Im Vergleich leider doch nur 3 Sterne. Habe nach langen Überlegen einen abgezogen. Aber dafür das ich bei Amrit für ca 1 Euro mehr, eine doppelte Portionen und eine entscheidend bessere Qualität bekomme, geht echt nicht mehr.

Achtung! Touristenfalle! Ich habe mir heute eine Paneer Tikka zum Mitnehmen bestellt und abgeholt. Erhalten habe ich: Eine Handvoll Käsestückchen in einem undefienierbaren Schleim. Ich habe wirklich Angst darüber nachzudenken was es eigentlich war. Da das ganze überhaupt nicht gewürzt war, habe ich es meinen Hunden gegeben. im nachhinein bin ich mir nicht mehr sicher ob es eine gute Idee war. Dazu habe ich eine sehr beeindruckende Menge Reis bekommen. Die Hälfte von Paneer Schale und noch einen extra Behälter. Also ungefähr 1 kg Reis. Hm. aha ja, fast vergessen-​es gab noch ein halbverkohltes Bhatura-​Brot. Ein Geschenk so zu sagen.Leckerchen.

We ended up at this place because it was near the Berlin wall. At the time that we got there (Thursday late PM) the place was super busy. However, I didn’t think much of the food — it just didn’t feel fresh. Service was friendly. I can’t explain why they seemed to have such a crowd.

Very good Indian food, great service and not expensive. Vegan friendly. Highly recommended.

Cocktails ja, essen nein.
Waren zu 12 im amar. Sofort wurde uns draußen platz gemacht, teilweise andere Kunden versetzt, was etwas peinlich war. Haben alle nur Cocktails getrunken. bei der Hygiene würde ich dort aber auch nichts essen.

Wir waren vor einem Konzert im Lido noch im Amar etwas Stärkung holen. Prinzipiell war ich erst einmal recht skeptisch (Tourischuppen). Wurden dann auch vor dem Amar von den Servicekräften angesprochen ob wir nicht einkehren wollten. Die Bedienung war meinem Geschmack nach schon zu überfeundlich, das wirkte alles etwas gekünzelt.
Die Hauptspeisen (Palak Paneer, Pindi Channa) und das Bhatura waren geschmacklich sogar überraschend gut. Ebenso hat man sich mit der Einrichtung Mühe gegeben.
Fazit: Kann man mal machen, gibt aber wesentlich bessere Inder in Berlin

Good food, great service! Chicken tandoori was not cooked in a tandoor, but was very savory and fall off the bone tender. Daal makhani was a little too puréed, but well developed flavored anyway. Plain naan was among the best I’ve ever had!

Ich habe hier letzte Woche mit Freunden meinen Geburtstag gefeiert. Wir hatten den Tisch um 20:00 Uhr bestellt, eine Platten-​Variante für 5 Personen bestellt und uns rundherum umsorgt und wohl gefühlt. Drink vorab gab es ruckzuck, die Getränke waren ratzfatz da, die Bestellung wurde sofort aufgenommen, nachdem wir vollzählig waren. Wir sind dann gar nicht mehr in ein anderes Lokal gegangen, sondern sind bis 2:00 geblieben. Meine Feunde hatten einen Sekt zu Mitternacht bestellt, der auch punktgenau kam, meiner mit einer Wunderkerze. Anschließend haben mir der Chef und 2 weitere Angestelle alles Gute gewünscht. Ausgegeben bekommen haben wir 2 Runden nach Wunsch: Grappa, Sambuca, Espresso oder so, einmal nach dem Essen, einmal nach Mitternacht.
Die Beleuchtung ist villeicht ein wenig dunkel, man kann das Essen ja kaum sehen, aber kuschelig und angenehm. Das Essen hat gut geschmeckt, war jetzt allerdings auch keine Offenbarung. Die Kellner waren sehr nett, aber vielleicht ein wenig zu viele und übereifrig, das hat mich ein wenig gestört. Vielleicht war das auch die Reaktion der letzten Beiträge hier??? Für 5+ reicht es geschmacklich nicht, aber gute 4* sind es für den angenehmen Abend.

Wir sind heute nach einem Kiezbummel hier eingekehrt, weil uns kalt war und der Magen sich schon zu Wort meldete.
Ich war schon früher öfters hier und deswegen war es recht einfach sich für das Amar zu entscheiden.
Wir wurden schon vor der Tür freundlich empfangen und an einen gut gelegenen Tisch am Fenster gebracht.
Die Speisekarte kam wenige Augenblicke später zusammen mit einem Teller Papadam und 3 verschiedenen Dips dazu. Eins war mit Joghurt, das andere sollte wohl Tandoori-​Style sein und der grüné Dip war undefinierbar.
Wir entschieden uns für eine Tomatensuppe, Naan-​Brot und zwei mal Chicken-​Mango. Das Essen kam jeweils schnell, heiß und sehr lecker daher (das Chicken-​Curry hätte mehr Schwung abgekonnt).
Beim Hauptgang hätten wir sogar vom Curry als auch Reis nach nachbekommen können, da uns die beiden Herren von Service immer nett fragten.
Na der wohlschmeckenden Stärkung zahlten wir 27,60 Euro (inkl.2 gr. Limonaden) und machten uns zum Aufbruch bereit.
Nun kommt das große ABER!!!
Ich suchte noch schnell das WC auf um mir die Hände zu waschen und da traff mich im Vorraum echt fast der Schlag.
Es ist ja völlig in Ordnung wenn man umbaut aber selbst das kann man besser arrangieren und hinstellen und die Toiletten waren fies. Wo ich das letzte mal da war konnte man diesbezüglich nichts schlechtes sagen aber dieser Zustand jetzt hat was vom Bahnhofsklo. Es steigt einem gleich ein penetranter scharfer Uringeruch in die Nase, alles ist sehr dreckig/​fleckig und voll von Schmierereien.
Das hat mir fast das Essen wieder hochkommen lassen und den Tag fast versaut.
Wir hoffen das diese Baustelle schnellstens verschwindet und vieles bei den Toiletten gemacht wird.
Da das Problem bei den Toiletten so gravierend war und auch teilweise auch im Restaurant sichtbar ist war durch die Baustelle im Durchgang leider nur 3 Sterne.

We came in on Sept 25^th, 2012. I love Indian food, so we thought we would check this one out. We had the lunch specials. Not much of a selection for lunch, but it was good. the food I would actually give 4 stars for. What brought the rating down was the service. There was us and someone at one other table, and I felt like we were inconveniencing the waiter with our business.

Freitag Abend, Cocktail Happy Hour. Für jeweils knappe 4EUR bestellten wir 3 Cocktails. Swimmingpool war keine Ahnung welche Rezeptur der Barmann hier reinsteckte, aber es war KEINER! Amar-​Special schmeckte widerlich und der dritte mit Kahlua und Baileys giftete ebenso. Leute was verkauft ihr da bloß???
Die indischen Jungs wollten derart lässig wirken, dass sie sich blamierten wo es nur ging.
Den einen Punkt gibt’s fürs akzeptable Brot. Nun ja, wer sich hierhin locken lässt ist selbst schuld.

Es gibt gute und wirklich schlechte Inder in Berlin das Amar gehört für mich auf jeden Fall zu denen, die man besser schließen sollte! Wir waren letzte Woche zu dritt im Amar Kreuzberg und saßen in der Nähe der Toiletten, die man dort auch sehr gut riechen konnte. Extrem angewiedert baten wir um einen neuen Tisch wo uns nur entgegnet wurde, dass die Speisen jetzt schon boniert sind und das es ja kein Uringeruch sondern Reinigungsmittel sei, was wir da riechen.
Die Antwort verblüffte uns völlig und wir haben nur die schon servierte Vorspeise gegessen und wollten gehen und die Hauptspeisen nicht mehr essen, da wir persönlich den Appetit verloren haben auf Grund der Toiletten-​Atmosphäre und diesem dreisten Spruch des Kellners. Hier hatten wir jedoch die Rechnung ohne den Wirt gemacht der bestand nämlich darauf, dass wir die Speisen zahlen und das wir uns ja da hingesetzt hätten also selbst schuld wären. Wärend der Diskussion stand der Kellner mit genervtem Gesicht vor uns und hatte das Tablett mit dem Essen in der Hand und drängelte wo er denn nun servieren soll! Die Art und Weise wie hier mit Kunden umgegangen wird ist meines Erachtens DAS ALLER LETZTE wir wurden ja auch gewarnt die Finger von den Hühnerfleischgerichten zu lassen, da Freunde von uns hier schon sehr schlechte Erfahrungen gemacht hatten! Vorsorglich haben wir nur vegetarische Gerichte bestellt und mussten diese nach langer Diskussion auch wiklich zahlen, sonst (so wurde uns gedroht) würde man die Polizei holen! Wir haben gezahlt und weren sicher dieses Restaurant NIE WIEDER betreten!

Hey! Mal wieder eine gute Dosis Glutamat gefällig? Geschmack nicht so wesentlich? Dann seid ihr hier richtig. Man kriegt die volle Dröhnung und fühlt sich nachher als hätte man plötzlich eine Grippe mit hohem Fieber und sei auf bestem Wege zum Herzinfarkt.

Ich war gestern dort und leider überhaupt nicht begeistert.
Der Preis des Mittagstisches war ok, aber der Service sehr unfreundlich.
Ich hatte das Gefühl, mich dafür entschuldigen zu müssen, das Restaurant betreten zu haben
Das Essen und Tagessuppe waren ok,
aber in dem Ambiente wollte ich nicht lange bleiben.

Ich gehe nicht so gerne zu Indischen Restaurants aber manchmal lasse ich mich von meinen Freunden ueberzeugen. Letztes Mal war ich bei Amar und wie immer (aber wie gesagt bin keine richtige Richterin) hat es mir nichts besonderes gaschmaeckt.
Deswegen sind die 3 Sterne nicht fuers das Essen aber fuers Service.
Es dauerte mehr als 30 minuten fuer unsere Essen (und es war nichts kompliziert und das Resto war nicht voll) und sie hatten auch meinen Teller komplett vergessen.

Fast and friendly service, actually a bit to fast as our food was served after 5 min, so I guess it can’t be freshly prepared. So it tasted and for the quality I recon it’s quite pricy. But it’s more this type of tourist places where most people don’t go back anyway.

Really terrible experience. Food bland, prices average for the area, but the drinks are super expensive and the service is just awful, even for Europe, even for Berlin, even for anybody anywhere, this is really, really, awful service.
First example: three of us go to eat and the salad they bring us with the meal is two sprigs and half a soggy tomato; I ask the manager if we cannot have a proper salad, he says something like, the salad is just a complement, you’re not meant to actually be counting on getting a real salad. Ohhhkay. And although it was the middle of the day and we were almost the only ones there they could not get our drink order correct, twice. I think we waited half an hour for a diet cola and an apfelschorle.
Second example (don’t ask why I went back again) with a large group. We’d made reservations for 15 or so. As our party started to arrive it was apparent that they had not actually made enough space for us, and so ordered a mother and her young daughter (maybe 11 years old), in the middle of their meal, to move to a different table to make room for us, which the poor ladies actually did. Without so much as a hint of apology or regret. I guess they saw the big table and thought we were more important but I was mortified.
Later, when the waiter brought out the food, he managed to also knock over the large Maracujaschorle he had just brought out to me. At, 4 liter it was quite the mess and went everywhere, fell in people’s laps, swarmed over the table, soaked up napkins, made everything sticky. What was their (his and the manager’s) reaction? To toss us a roll of paper towels and walk away. When it became apparent that he had no intention of bringing me another drink I asked him to do so. Twenty minutes later he brought out a small maracujasaftschorle. I told him, sorry, but my last one was nearly full, can you bring me a large one please? (I have worked for years in gastro and know that a server knows the difference between a half-​empty drink and one that was nearly full, and I knew he knew full well that I had taken, at most, two sips of that drink.) The expression on his face as he shook his head was so ugly it cannot be described. It was a combination of disgust, resentment and somehow enjoyment that I could not do anything about it because I was hemmed in to my seat.
I did not let that stop me and was out of my seat and around the table and standing an inch from his face mere seconds later. The manager came around and tried to tell me to just take a seat again, that there is no problem here. I asked him about my drink and the waiter actually started to argue that I shouldn’t get a large one again. In front of us and everybody in the restaurant. The manager saw that I was not sitting down again until they agreed to bring me what they had dropped all over us without so much of a mumbled apology and finally had a different waiter come out to us. 40 minutes after the drink was spilled on me was it replaced, and not at all gracefully or nicely.
I cannot unrecommend this place enough. As others have said it is an absolute tourist trap and on top of that they treat you like crap. Really, really awful, terrible place; there are few places that I would boycott for life but this is one of them. Even if you’re desperate for food, walk a couple meters further and get a döner, because giving your money to these guys is like slapping their customers yourself.

While wandering around Kreuzberg with my American visitors, we happened by Amar and decided to check it out, namely due in part to the extensive selection of vegetarian dishes.
After an initial rough start (sitting at a recently-​cleared spot outside, then being told by another customer that she was waiting for it, then being seated elsewhere, and having a misunderstanding where our server thought we’d ordered when we hadn’t), we finally were able to order our food. The upside of this delay in service was that we were served the tasty pre-​food fruit juice multiple times.
My companions ordered Chicken Tikki Masala and the Gemischte Vorspeisenplatte. Meanwhile, I settled on the Piddi Channa, seeing as I am a huge lover of chickpeas, and it was one of the few vegan items on the menu.
When our food arrived, I was a bit disappointed to see that my otherwise vegan dish had cheese sprinkled on top. Not wanting to cause any trouble (or wait longer for a new dish to be prepared), and because the amount wasn’t too much, I overlooked it, choosing to eat my food anyway. The dairy aside, the dish was delicious, as were the free appetizers brought to us by who I can only assume was the manager or owner. We also ordered garlic naan, which was alright, although the garlic had a strange flavouring.
All in all, it was an enjoyable, filling, and moderately-​priced food. Since I have a curry sensitivity, I don’t find myself eating Indian often, but for a nice spot outside (complete with plenty of people-​watching), this is a place I would suggest. Just if you’re vegan, make sure to specify no dairy, even for dishes that don’t list it.

I frequently have cravings for Indian cuisines and so out of hunger and proximity, we ended up at Amar, which is conveniently located near Schlesisches Tor. Having lived in NYC and Seattle, I’ve eaten some great and not so great indian food, and I would have to rank Amar as one of the poorest excuses for Indian food that I’ve tasted, I’m afraid. When we arrived there were a few large groups ahead of us, so we were given a guava drink to sip on while we waited. (That was probably the best part of the overall experience) We ordered the Malai Kofta and the Madras Fish, the garlic naan, with a mango lassi — which are would be safe bets for this obviously high traffic, busy location. I would not recommend the malai kofta — as it is more bland and creamy than it should be, making for an unappetizing creamsicle-​colored dish. The madras fish came in a flavorful stew, but they used breaded fish filets that when sitting in a stew, creates a strange slimy consistency of the fish, not to mention the fish was chewy and overcooked. Maybe there are some better dishes on the menu, but I’ll never know — I won’t be back.

I’m a bit surprised by all the bad reviews of this place — I really quite liked it. Decent atmosphere, quite good Indian food, German beers — what’s not to like? It was a bit odd being shunted from one table to another, but apparently they just hadn’t been able to get the «reserved» sign back onto the table before we arrived.
Anyway, I enjoyed it — that’s the most important thing — right?

Jedes halbe Jahr wird das Amar, das indische Restaurant, in dem einst ein gammeliger Grieche nicht wirklich große Erfolge feierte, bunter und voller. Das liegt wahrscheinlich daran, dass auch das Publikum bunter und mehr wird so wie der ganze Wrangelkiez immer bunter und voller wird.
Die Karte bietet alles, was man sich im klassischen indischen Restaurant wünscht vom frittierten Brot, über Tandoori-​Spezialitäten bis hin zu den diversen Eintöpfen mit Linsen, Lamm und zahllosen anderen geheimen Zutaten.
Der Service hier ist zuvorkommend und freundlich, auch wenn das Ganze manchmal den Charme einer Massenabfertigung hat, wenn alle Plätze restlos besetzt sind und die lächelnden Kellner mit den Reistöpfchen und zischenden Gusspfannen durch die Gegend flitzen.

I’ve been here twice for lunch and always had a good experience.
Each time I was with one companion and we had two currys, a big salad, rice and naan for less than 10eur each. The second time, we were given free mango drinks before the meal and free mango-​berry dessert thingies afterwards.
The chicken korma is creamy and delicious with nuts and dried currants. The lamb vindaloo has a real kick to it, which is rare in Berlin! And the chicken tikka masala came out on a sizzling fajita-​style platter and had a really lovely flavor.
The service is always attentive, but they need to figure out how to block the door in cold weather… it kept blasting us when the door was opened, to the point we had to put our coats on.
Also, what’s up with opening the cellar door such that the bathrooms are blocked and customers have to dangerously try to circumvent it?
All in all this place is nothing special but it gets the job done.
