I went to monks last night with a friend from NZ and my wife. We found the beer was very good. Studying the menu we found a asparagus festival menu, great we live asparagus. After checking with the waitress what the price different was for a classic asparagus dish was(157⁄225 kr) we just laughed out loud ;-) 157 kr is for one!!! 1 asparagus!!! And 225kr is for … 2 asparagus!!! Come on this is just the worst deal ever, very disappointed we ordered moules frittes and sousages instead. Come on Monks one asparagus for 157kr is a joke!!!

The place has several areas to dine. We mostly end up in the nice basement with a castle like atmosphere. There is a decent variety of different beers to choose from that taste good and the menu includes an ok selection of foods so everyone should find something. We tend to eat moules frites that normally are good. Last time we got a bit unlucky but they handled it very smoothly and we just could order something else. No one got sick as well. In general we have a good time when being there, but it feels a bit overpriced for what you get.

In need of a rest and some refreshment after a long day of exploring, I followed the recommendations from friends to give this place a go for a restorative pint or two. I’d tried to visit earlier in the day around lunchtime, but had been stymied by a locked door, some time after the advertised opening time had passed. When I gave Monks a second chance in the early evening, I found it was only partly open, with the upstairs wine bar holding the fort — the downstairs remained shut. Staffing issues aside, I was very impressed with the interior — dark woods, deep and plush armchairs, tastefully decorated throughout, Monks is clearly a classy joint. I asked for advice on the ale selection and was very pleased with the local IPA on offer, as well as a darker ale for the second pint. Monks is easily found, virtually opposite Gamla Stan underground station, sort of halfway between the main bridges and Riddarholmen. The service was good and the place had a great ambience too, but I was left wondering what the full Monks experience would have been like.

What a great place to grab a drink or 2 Or 3 and grab food(bar food). I loved my fruit tasting beer and my husband enjoyed his beer that were recommended by Johan our awesome and friendly bar tender. At this pub you might also find a kind and friendly Christoph who will talk to anyone. He is a regular here and made our night. He made us laugh and made the experience super fun. Make sure to drink downstairs, it’s super fun down there!

Awesome atmosphere and location and very friendly and hospitable staff. Bruce Springsteen and other fun oldie music. Excellent beverages. What more could a person ask for? The only reason for 4 and not 5 stars is the limited menu, including limited drink options. Otherwise, totally awesome. Really recommend the apple beer, ginger beer and the pinot noir.

Really, really great bar if you want to enjoy a stout beer. It’s a micro brewery so they actully brew their beer there and don’t sell it anywhere else. Their own dark lager is really tasty, one of the best beers I’ve had. They also have cherry beers that taste like liquid sour candies. You can go down to the celler and experience the real Gamla Stan atmosphere, loud and dark but with candles everywhere, or stay up to the wine corner, with classy and elegant furnitures and jazzy music. I have not tried the food but it always smells so good !

Monks is pretty cool if you are into all-locals when it comes to beerish drinks(stout, porter etc). But if you are more into a «stor stark»(just a beer) you probably think the beverage here tastes too much. They have their regular Royals(Madeleine, Carl Philip and Victoria) which are stouts and porter. Then they have several additional beers, mostly Swedish micro breweries but also imports. If you prefer lager — they do have lagers as well! The«bier stube» and restaurant is located in a historical building from 17’s century in the basement! It is dark and cool. You get a little Charles Dickens feeling.

The beer selection really is great and there’s an ever-changing variety of import beers that the barkeep will happily tell you about. Came here for the moules marinières — tried the original and provençale. Both were overcooked and the mussels were much too large to be any fun. Staff was somewhat clueless about the menu and table placement. An underwhelming experience.

For those who appreciate porters, stouts and great beer in general, Monks Porter House should be on your list of places to check out in Stockholm. Located in the small, but trendy island of Gamla Stan lays this gem. One can most certainly find great Scandanavian beer from Sweden, Denmark and others. But, they also have a great bottle list with Belgium, The Netherlands and even an impressive selection from The U.S. with brewers such as Three Floyds and Goose Isand. We got here kind of late on a weekday, but were still treated with great hospitality. The next time that I am back in Stockholm, will be popping back into this spot for a beer.
