For starters we had mussels and hot wings and they were good but our main courses were not that good. I had some penne and my husband carbonara and they tasted the same and had raw onions which were so overpowering because there were so many that the whole meal tastes like that. Also the main the courses were stupid large. Smaller portions would have been nice.

Had a wonderful stay here at the Lighthorseman. We arrived to the place undergoing some external alterations, with scaffolding surrounding the building. however this had absolutely no impact upon the friendly atmosphere inside. We were warmly welcomed by the bar staff(Lucy) and shown to our cosy room. Upon arrival were particularly hungry, so opted to eat dinner at the pub’s Italian restaurant, conveniently located at the bottom of our staircase. We were again welcomed into the empty restaurant by a waitress who was more than happy to chat to us about life in Melbourne for a good part of the night. We ordered the risotto and lasagna, both of which were very moreish. Drinks were also very well reasonably priced. Nothing was too much trouble during our stay and the extra care by staff to make you feel welcome does not go unnoticed. When we visit York again, this will be the place we’ll be staying. and hopefully it’ll be for longer next time!

A lovely Victorian-style bar with a nice atmosphere and fairly friendly locals, not bad considering it’s fairly close to the city centre. As a B&B, the breakfast is very good, with generous portions. However I found the room a little pokey and oddly shaped, they’ve tried to pack a lot of B&B rooms in upstairs, and suffice to say some soundproofing would’ve been nice but apart from the pokey rooms, pretty good.
