Spent a couple of days on a business trip in York and 2 nights at the Best Western Monkbar. At the top end of town at the edge of the castle walls, the 10 minute walk from the train station was amazing. Just minutes from the Minster and a few steps from the historic centre First time I had been up this part of York. The layout is like a row of houses/businesses had been knocked through and the corridors are like a rabbit warren — but this adds to the character and not noted by me as a negative. Off the reception/bar area is an enclosed courtyard which is a lovely wee spot in the evening. The hotel is undergoing a massive refurbishment programme and I was first into a new room. Very large and well equipped but the wifi was ad-hoc on night 1 but better on night 2. No complaints but there wasn’t an iron/board so I don’t know if that is the norm as I wouldn’t fancy having to fetch one from reception if in a hurry. I did peek into other rooms undergoing works and those near to completion in the 1st floor under 50 numbered area were all large and spacious Grub was excellent — room service 1st night and that menu was very limited but very good value, especially when weighed against the quality. In all very good value and quality with very friendly staff but missing leisure facilities if that’s your thing. Would I stay there again — well I’m back again tomorrow and plumped for here again.

I have stayed at the Monkbar in York on two occasions now, both were very enjoyable. The Hotel itself is in a wonderful location for exploring York, right outside the Monkbar gate. All the Major attractions are in walking distance and only a few minutes walk to the shambles. The staff at the hotel provided a great level of customer service and even let us leave our car in the car park all weekend so we could explore the city on foot. The buffet style breakfast in the morning was also of very good standard with plenty of choice. I would definatly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a relaxing stay in York.

We all have a reason for remembering staying or being somewhere, Romance, Tragedy or other, well I was staying here on the night that Princess Diana died. Where were you? Situated at the heart of the historic city of York, the Monkbar Hotel overlooks the old city walls and is only five minutes from York Minster and the Shambles. The hotel offers free, secure parking for residents, so you can park your car and start exploring York. There is an elegant courtyard garden for drinks before dinner and a restaurant offering a wide choice of food. There are 99 guest bedrooms, all doubles and twins, also four poster bedrooms with Jacuzzi baths. The hotel is completely non-smoking but offers facilities for those who must, and there are comfortable and attractive lounges for meeting friends and watching the world go by and believe me it does. The Monkbar hotel also has a Civil Wedding Licence for weddings and civil partnerships. Meeting in York? then this is ideal –theyhave dedicated training and meeting facilities with integral syndicates ensures that you can focus on the business in hand and it’s first class. The restaurant is excellent although with the choice in York you may want to venture out but that’s for other reviews. An lovely place to stay in a beautiful city so enjoy all the sites.
