I used to visit this little café a few years ago back when it wasn’t as busy and only had a tiny amount of seating space. They have since expanded and now have more tables in a nice,(if not slightly cramped) back room. They also have a cute courtyard if you can brave the cool Yorkshire air. I visited on a Saturday at prime time brunch hour, so naturally we expected a wait, especially because there was five of us in a café with predominantly tables for two. We told it would be around ten minutes which made us happy because we had a hungry, grumpy three year old with us. We actually waited about 30 minutes which was slightly frustrating but the staff were working as hard as they could. When we did get seated it was at a table for four. When we asked for an extra chair the waitress got a bit sassy with us and made us feel like a huge inconvenience. Not great. The brunch menu was really good, I opted for Eggs Benedict. When this arrived it was beautifully presented and I loved that the hollandaise came on the side, I personally drown mine but I know this isn’t to everyone’s taste so it was good to have the option. The bacon sandwich was also gorgeous and it is great to see such good quality ingredients. This is of course reflected in the price which is pricey but not outrageous for such quality. They also sell amazing cakes and artisan treats at the main counter so you can just nip in to buy some goodies and get a takeaway coffee. I will definitely come back but on this occasion the service let it down and it all felt rushed and chaotic but thoroughly enjoyed the food.

Prices are reasonable. Most of the best food are on the specials menu, food are displayed differently the usual. Coffee wasn’t bad. Only down side was that it is a small shop with only about 5 tables

This was a recommendation from a friend, and it didn’t disappoint! This is a fairly small bistro, so there was indeed the need to wait in line in the queue! After a 15 min wait, we were seated towards the back of the shop. Having browsed the menu I ordered a pot of tea and a sweet chilli chicken sandwich. The tea was present in a cast iron pot which I thought was pretty cool. The food was presented nicely but they actually got my order wrong! They gave me a pulled pork sandwich instead, which I still thoroughly enjoyed though, so I didn’t bother to send it back! Next time I will try the cakes, as they had a really nice selection in the display as you walked into the bistro and overall this was a really nice visit.

Another great experience their Oak Smoked Salmon and Scrambled Eggs were without fault. It reminds that to cook real eggs use the real thing BUTTER. Thanks again, next time I’m here I will be back in…

Mama and I stumbled into John Mannion after perusing a few other tea room windows and noticing that they were far too crowded to squeeze into — school holidays, who’d have ‘em? I liked the atmosphere in John Mannion, all chalkboards and trays full of hunks of bread around the place, but overall I thought it was a bit of a meh experience(sorry previous Unilocalers, I hope I don’t drag the stars down too much for you!) There was a good choice of sandwiches but no real menu, only my beloved chalkboards; hard to read when there’s a lady head infront of it and even harder when you’re supposed to wear glasses but never do. I eventually opted for a ham & cheese sarnie because I was feeling simple. That and I dislike most sauces, which alot of the options here come with. The sarnie itself was lovely, big and chunky, with a sweet tomato/onion relish, and a dressed salad on the side. The bread was a real high point in that it was herby and garlicy, but, suprisingly, white — possibly there was an option for brown but it wasn’t given. Given the wholesome nature of the place I would have considered this as standard, but maybe that’s just me! The service was okay, staff seemed to be really good with children but lacking connection with adults, meaning we felt a bit left to the side at times as our plates were cleared quickly with little comment rather than the lengthy-in-comparison conversation about the meals at the table next door. Desserts and cakes looked mouthwateringly good and I reckon they would’ve upped the star — shame we had other, wine based, plans in mind!

Nice friendly place with table service. Offers well made snacks and teas and coffees. Espresso based drinks served. Good, locally sourced ingredients. Option to eat outside in private space. Recommended.

On a trip to York we stumbled across this place, checked it out on Unilocal and it had one positive review, well now it has two. This place is excellent! Really fresh bread, excellent meats and cheese. The menu was a little confusing but after speaking with the waitress she explained what we would be getting and that was a little bit of everything, cheese, meat, bread, olives, fish, artichoke. We had two dishes and shared this between 2 adults and 2 children(11&5) for a light lunch, this was the right amount for us for a light lunch. Saw deserts on the menu but we didn’t have one. There was a fantastic looking meringue which one customer ordered but when he received it he turned it away, the old git said it was too big! It was large but easily shared between two persons which there were. There are some strange people out there. Would definitely go back on a trip back to York. The place was constantly busy, staff very friendly, it looked clean and tidy. The chef and I presume owner had a handle on everything that was occurring. It appears they do food for special events and weddings etc. You could order sandwiches and coffee to go. They had a specials board as you can see from my posted photos. They also have a website.
