After a week of pub grub and clichéd British food, it was time for some curry. Unilocal to the rescue! We found Akbars just a few blocks from the train station, so it made a good stop after the National Railway Museum. I thought the dishes were fine quality, tasty and not too spicy. Good prices and good portions, suitable for sharing. Loved the atmosphere, with low lighting from chandeliers with red highlights and lounge music. It seemed more modern and hip than a standard Indian joint. The crowd was a mix of small groups of businessmen and tourists, with a few families like us.

Great Indian with huge portions. I had the tikka Massala which was rich and creamy. Huge Naans too! Hard to argue with the price either. We went as a large group and they were able to accommodate us easily! Fantastic!

We stopped in here for dinner on our first day in the U.K. It was an exceptional first meal, and came recommended by the concierge at our hotel. While I am reasonably familiar with Indian food in the U.S. there were a few things on the menu here that I was unfamiliar with but may be very common in British curry restaurants. We decided to try the British Indian dishes, rather than the traditional dishes. I am still not certain what a Balti is, but it is delicious and I would order it again. We had a chicken and spinach balti, tikka masala, a fish and potatoes dish, and a family garlic naan. The naan was enormous!!! I think I amused the waiter by asking if he would take a photo of us with the food, but I needed to show people that back home! We were helped by several people in the restaurant, and they were all very friendly and helpful. The restaurant is very pretty inside. It seemed like there were several people on dates around us. It seemed like a great choice for a date night or a family dinner.

We were in York recently and felt like having an Indian meal. We were told by our B&B Owner(Romley Guest House, which we fell in love with, btw) that Akbar’s was York’s finest Indian restaurant. We went there and it was everything like the one in Manchester but without the hustle and bustle. Definitely recomment it!

Perfectly reasonable Indian food. I fancied some sort of a balti, and on the recommendation of the waiter for taste, I ended up with a Chefs Challenge. It was a sort of keema balti with potatoes. Not the best to be honest. But you got nan and pilau rice with it for a pretty good price.(And I think you get something like a free pudding if you eat the lot, but either way it’s good value with the bread and the rice.) Beer is only served in small bottles, with nothing on tap either. I found the waiting staff a little snarky and perfunctory, despite the place being pretty empty.

Though the atmosphere gets quite noisy, the food and service have been quite good. The waitstaff is quite attentive to your needs.

Mmmm still *dreaming of Akbars*. One of the best places for traditional indian food. The korma was rich and creamy, absolutely perfect. Also dessert was a real treat as well! Great atmosphere, great service, great stop all together.

Delicious Indian food, good selection on the menu, well appointed modern surroundings, attentive staff. The only downside is, just like the Leeds restaurant, it is a victim of it’s own success, in that it can be uncomfortably packed with people. But you can see why, great food at a reasonable price.

Great food, Great atmosphere, Great people, Great bread, and Great Bill(^0^) Only down point is small place. If you are a bit bigger, you have to squeeze between tables. Lucky I am medium size so OK. Highly recommended to go, but not too many. Because it is not cheap. Only been there two times, one for my husband birthday and another also for my husband birthday ^^

Thanks, Adam! Wandering the streets after sightseeing, I let Unilocal lead me to a top rated restaurant. I was not even slightly disappointed because Akbar’s is an excellent curry house. Even though I walked in at 5:15, they were happy to see me and brought me to a table near the window. The menu was a bit strange — a solidly laminated sheet — but it had all the usual curries that I’ve come to expect in this country. And so instead of going with the usual, I let my eye choose. I started with the Liver Tikka. I’ve never had this before and I would recommend it. Not at all«livery», three good sized pieces arrived on a sizzling plate with some sauteed onions and a bowl of mint sauce. Th mint was a big help because this was seriously hot. Not spicy hot, temperature hot. Wow! For mains, the«handi» was listed as ‘just like we have it at home’ on the menu so I thought I’d give that a try. I chose lamb instead of chicken. It took about ten minutes(the waiter warned me it would be 15) and I also opted for two chapati to go with it. Again, very hot coming from the kitchen and it had a whole lot of flavor and spice, but it wasn’t «hot» spicy just really tasty. Lots of small pieces of lamb in a sauce that is beyond description. Let’s just say that it was excellent and the chapati was perfect for scooping. No dessert, but the cold bottle of Kingfisher was perfect(first time in a bottle, it’s usually draft). A great meal!

Best curry in York that I have had. Décor may not be to everyones liking. It gets very very busy so go early to avoid long dining times. Staff good and friendly. Great menu choice of authentic dishes — sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tasty!

Agree with previous reviewer. Intriguing place. Food was v good & upbeat atmosphere. Def will go back. Bit of pot luck though which of the Demi-gods you get as your waiter. Ours was quite unhelpful but territorial about serving his table. Used to that though. one of my work colleagues was«up in the night» after last visit. I’ve not had this experience I must say though.

In my opinion, the best place for curry in York. Specialising in Pakistani cuisine, the dishes here seem more authentic than in most Indian/Pakistani/Bangladeshi restaurants. The menu is quite extensive, so expect to spend some time studying it! Whilst a good place for groups, it is very popular, so booking is recommended(and generally necessary at the weekend). The service is fast and friendly. It’s nice to see that they know what their food contains and are happy to advise people with digestive intolerances. In common with most restaurants of this type, they serve Cobra(or is it Kingfisher?!) and various bottled beers of the commercial bland variety. How I long for a proper India Pale Ale with my curry.

I have eaten at their flagship branch in Bradford and also in Leeds so when I found this place I was truly anticipating greatness. I was not disappointed. However here I came across the biggest NONO I have ever seen in an Indian. Tinned potatoes in the starter salad. They tasted awful and were swiftly dispatched back to the kitchen and not replaced — or paid for I hasten to add. The usual space saving naan tree is an amusing gimmick and the no plate rule is still there. Asked for jug after jug of Mango Lassi to accompany the meal and it was very good. I would recommend this for a special meal and not for an everyday curry as it is at the higher end of the price range. Booking essential on weekends

On a couple of occasion, we’ve taken large groups to Akbars, and never been disappointed. The food is of a consistently high quality, at reasonable prices and made with fresh ingrediants. They state on the menu that everything is prepared freshly by the chefs on the premises, and it certainly seems that way — we’ve never had any cause to complain about the food. As well as the standard a la carte style menu, you can also choose from set menus for up to six people. The standard menu is huge — theres stacks to choose from, and it caters to those who like their food mega spicy or those who are a little more traditional. Theres also a vegetarian menu, which is a rarity in that it contains a lot of choices, rather than the usual couple of things to choose from. Service is always efficient and friendly, and thers a comprehensive drinks menu and wine list. The dessert menu is also much bigger than most Indian restaurants locally. Prices are good, considering the quality of the food. Very much recommended

Akbars is a really good Indian restaurant and I have visited this one and their one is Leeds which is equally as good. This one isn’t as big but is still good. They have a big menu with something for everyone. They portions are big and we never finish it all. The naan breads are the main attractions. They come out on big skewers and you just tear bits off. The family naans are massive and you can get quite a few kinds. The staff are very friendly and helpful and it is modernly decorated with lots of lights. Reasonably priced and very tasty, I’d highly recommend it.
