We have just moved to the area and were delighted to discover this pub in easy walking distance of our new home. We visited on a Saturday night for dinner, and my girlfriend sat on my lap after the meal for a little kiss and cuddle, the same as we have done the previous week at a far more upmarket restaurant, with my future mother-in-law. We were incredulous when the landlord marched over and rudely dictated to us ’ this is a pub restaurant, no, just no’ and then stood there glaring at us, and walked away gesticulating to us to move apart. We were not doing anything offensive, and none of the handful of other diners seemed remotely bothered by our behaviour. The very friendly waitress then came over and apologised for the rude manner in which he had spoken to us. We accepted her apology but will never set foot in this place again, which is a shame as we have lots of friends who we would have otherwise met there on a regular basis. We were interested to note that on their website, they advertise as catering for weddings, but given how offended(and offensive) the landlord was by a little kiss and cuddle, we would not recommend it! We paid our bill, but obviously with no monetary tip, but our tip would be that this is a pub that serves food, and to get over yourself!

What a shame! This place has had a makeover over the last few years. It used to be one of my favourite pubs and I hadn’t used it for ages until last night. Regret going there. Cannot recommend the food. My wife and friend had Lamb shanks, which were nice but the veg were done to death and served plated up! New potatoes cremated! My mates’ steak was good but chips ‘orrible! As for my Linguine Bolognese, or perhaps I should say my pasta and basic mince, was sooooooo disappointing. Very dry and lacked any sauce, so my friend shared her gravy with me! Nice of her, but not quite the same is it? No taste at all and so limited on Grana Pedano cheese. Wish I’d had the cheese-boardbut not at £8!!! As for the desserts. little choice. My friend settled for Jam Roly Poly and Custard. Her opinion.terrible. Was stale and tasteless. Could have had better in a Transport Café’. Will give it the 2 star as it sold Doombar bitter, which is always nice.

This establishment is under new management and its made such a big difference, in a positive way! The food has made leaps and bounds and the interior is a lot better than it was. Nice open fire and really relaxed lighting in the evening. They could do with a few more real ales on tap in my opinion but there’s enough to satisfy. Old Speckled Hen is one of my favourites anyway. Plenty of nice New World wines available. I had the barbecue ribs when I ate there and they were fantastic. Just the right amount and really nice and tender.
