This pub is always busy even on a week day. Popular with local residents and people just wanting good value food. I did speak to the manager as although the bar maid looked at me several times she only served guys even though I had been waiting before them. I have in my previous life been a bar maid and always served customers in turn regardless of gender or looks. The manager said he would speak to her which resulted in sour looks from her to our table, this is why I have scored 2stars. This aside I have eaten at the pub several times and could recommend this place. Xoxo

I worked in this pub over eight years ago when it was under different management and called The Old Drill. I’ll be honest, it wasn’t the nicest of pubs, nor was it the worst. I wouldn’t have chosen to drink in there on my nights off, let’s put it that way. I’m not sure when the transformation into the HG Wells took place but I think it was some time in the last year to year and a half ago. And what a transformation it has been! Under their new management they have a new food menu and I’ve met friends here a few times for lunch. The beer garden is popular in the summer months and they have a refurbished dining area with plenty of seating. I’ve tried the burger which was very tasty, and I had the pork belly recently which wasn’t amazing, but as pub grub goes it wasn’t half bad. By far my favourite thing on the menu is their own HG Wells Salad which I had in the summer out in the beer garden. They added chicken to it on my request and it was fantastic! The staff all seem friendly and happy and although I have spotted a few of the regulars I recognise from its days as The Old Drill, it looks like the HG Wells has picked up a good new clientele and caters to a much wider demographic. Well done to the new management, you’ve done a great job transforming a mediocre(at best) pub into a really decent pub to meet friends and hang out!
