Oisi Restaurant

This is my favourite sushi place. Hidden away behind a tiny door and a spiral staircase, you feel very secretive eating such delicious food.
I have been many times, and will continue to do so. The sushi itself can be a bit expensive, especially if you eat as much as Ido. But the lunch menu is a lot cheaper, you can get a set meal for £10 — £15.
The staff are great, the owner never fails to come out and speak to every single customer, checking they are ok or explaining a bit of history behind the cuisine.
Highly recommend this place. A great little gem hidden among the street shops.

Good little place, it’s situated in between two parts of a printing shop, has a very small door entrance and spiral steps down to the restaurant itself. Lovely food, my first Japenese, with tuna, salmon, crab sushi etc very good. Great service with lovely people etc friendly, owner was there on the night. Over priced at about £40 per head and a bit if an odd setting dodgy services etc although gave loyalty cards and vouchers for money off next time. Probably wouldn’t go back, because I like to try different locations, but enjoyed my time there.

Some food really nice, but chicken often super dry (almost as if reheated). Service tonight started off fine and then went to non-​existing and we left ticked off.

We happened upon this place while looking for something else. I am glad we did. Love it. Certainly not cheap, but Great food and great service. One of our party had not had Japanese before. After a short crash course from the staff, they really looked after us. They knew what they were doing. The best service I’ve ever had in the UK. I couldn’t get enough. Our newbie was thrilled. We had sashimi, sushi, tempura, tepanyaki.
Highlights… StaffService, atmosphere, tempura ice cream.
Lowlights… I am not in Woking enough to go.

I first came across Oisi shortly after returning from a holiday in Japan — it’s quite easy to miss the small basement-​restaurant amongst the others along West Byfleet’s main road but the sign did catch my eye so we gave it a whirl.
Happily, Oisi is pretty authentic in its presentation and food — going down the stairs really feels like being transported far away and the interior is peaceful, private and cosy without ever feeling cramped or too dark.
The menu may not be extensive (there are only few options for main courses, though the array of sushi on offer us vast) but it is all delicious. The sizzling dishes are particularly excellent. You know it’s a good sign that whenever I go there is always at least one or two parties of local Japanese businessmen out to dinner there.

We were staying just a few miles from my mother’s place, trying to avoid being fed vegetables boiled to death, and nipped down the road looking for a late night Chinese place when we actually spotted one. Across the road from the carry-​out place, in the most unflattering of English strip centers in the unknown town of West Byfleet, (the Cut-​N-​Shoot of London) was this intriguing façade, and I pulled up outside and had a quick look and knew right away that we had stumbled on something unusual.
The hostess and waitresses were wearing various coloured silk kimonos, and bowed with the correct level of deference for a high quality restaurant.
We were seated without reservations, in one of the better tables in the house and presented with the menus and sake list.
I instantly relaxed, knowing that this was going to be expensive, but worth every penny, and looking at passing plates on the way to other tables, I could not wait.
There started the real problem, I could not eat everything on the menu, so I started in on a serious appetizer kick, almost ignoring the sushi and sashimi.
Soft-​shell crab always catches my eye, as does dumplings (gyoza), baby squid, prawns (large shrimp), and octopus balls.
Having almost stuffed ourselves, we then could not resist ordering the black cod and a second round of soft-​shell crabs.
I will not give a tedious description of every dish, just say that everything that came out of the kitchen was hot, tasty, exquisitely presented with edible garnishes and served by some of the best waitstaff I have ever encountered.
The whole experience had a surreal feeling, especially the end when we walked out of this beautiful restaurant with the classic Japanese décor and inviting smells, into West Byfleet, a suburb of Woking, which is itself a suburb of London.
I have got to go back for the tempura ice-​cream., and I need another shot at the scallops.

This Place Is a Gem! tucked away on Old Woking Road a little doorway between high-​street shops and your average takeaways! go down the spiral staircase into the basement restaurant where you are greeted by warm and friendly staff, really the service is great the staff are incredibly polite. the restaurant is very small and intimate and if you like sushi and sashimi then your in for a treat, the food is FANTASTIC! the Miso Black Cod is my personal favourite. but what makes this restaurant stand out is its outstanding value for money. I can’t recommend it enough.
