As other reviewers have noted this place is tucked away and easily overlooked, but once inside it is delightful. There is a lift for those less able. It houses all those things you expect to find in a city museum and extraordinarily an entire old fashioned tobacconist that was moved there lock, stock & barrel after the owner died & bequeathed it to the city! I grew up here and was thrilled to find it tucked away in the museum. Entry is free although you can make a donation.

The City Museum in Winchester is a nice little place to visit if you would like to know a bit more about the history of winchester. The gallery is very easy to understand for the adults and for the young and there are sometimes costumes that you could try on and become one of the olden day characters. It is rather small and closes around 4:30pm but its situated near the top end of town near the Winchester Cathedral. Its a fun place to be if you would like to learn more about the olden days of Winchester.

A fantastic little museum tucked away in Winchester, we almost walked right by it. Free to enter which is a real treat these days. The museum is small and set over a few floors but that doesn’t detract from it’s attention to detail and entertainment and historical value. It really was a fun hour we spent there, going from Roman times right down to Victoriana and the kids could dress up in each time line and it was great fun, learned a lot about Winchesters history.

This City Museum in Winchester is very small and its hardly noticable if you didn’t know about it or walked past it. There is some old pieces of items and displayed in glass cases. Apart from that, there is a very very tiny shop to buy gifts but apart from that its a good basic overal museum to show a bit of old fashion history.

This is a tiny museum often overlooked. It houses some oldie world relics, including bits of old advertising material for household names such as OXO. It is not just a museum about Winchester but also gives an idea of how life used to be. A great place to take children as there is not to much there to overwhelm them but enough that it makes history quite fun. A good starting block for first visits to Winchester or an idea for a rainy day.
