What a great site. Helpful RSPB volunteers and good coffee on the café overlooking the lake. Interesting historical facts around the walk which is kept free of litter. The habitat is well looked after but not over tidied. Amazing free accessible facility so close to town with loads of parking space. Everyone should support it!

Large nature reserve consisting of reedbeds and lagoons run by the RSPB near the centre of Weymouth. The small visitors centre is adjacent to a large Pay and Display car park — there is no other nearby free parking — so even if you are an RSPB member, most likely your visit will not be entirely without cost. The visitors centre has large picture windows which overlook perhaps the largest expanse of water with telescopes set up for visitors to view the birds. Hot drinks are available althought these are from a machine. A public footpath crosses the centre of the reserve and so a fair bit can be seen by non-RSPB members without paying the £2.50 entrance fee, £0.50 for children. The hide is situated about 20 mins walk away from the main entrance — quite a distance for the elderly or disabled although the paths are wheelchair friendly and along the flat. If you like birdwatching and are visiting the area, this reserve is worth visiting as it quite frequently pulls in scarcities including bittern and bearded tit. Cetti’s warblers are common and give you an almost deafining blast of song as you pass by.
