Perfectly adequate café. A bit expensive for what you get, but the food was very nice all the same! Staff neither rude nor particularly warm.

Awesome full English breakfast… not quite so awesome service. To be fair, they are always busy on Sunday morning, very cozy, but we always manage to find somewhere to sit. Getting a menu and getting someone’s attention to take your order takes some doing. The first time my friend and I had breakfast here we waited for half an hour and when we asked, the menus still never came. Since then, we have gotten wise and as we head for an open table, we grab menus on our way… I would love to try any of the dishes on the board or even the cakes in the window because it all sounds delicious and lovely, but the full English breakfast always reels me in every time. Not to mention the price for the amount of food… well it is a steal!

A local hero. Tasty food freshly made, an outstanding selection of cakes and hot food as well. Their coffee is first rate and the number of regulars reflects this. The staff are friendly, attentive and efficient. The whole place feels like an English tearoom circa 1945. But without the rationing of course!

This place is a hidden gem. Well, it’s not that hidden because all of the locals know about it. And it was once profiled in a national broadsheet by a quite-famous reviewer who declared his lunch here to be one of the finest he’d had all year. But for arguments sake, lets go back to calling it hidden. Here, the dishes are all prepared with locally sourced, organic ingredients. The meat comes from the top-class butchers down the road. 5 At The Bridge is open for breakfast and lunch. Come here with a big stack of newspapers and sit down to a pot of tea and a full english breakfast — a greasy spoon this isn’t. There are also cakes, pies and brownies too, all freshly and locally baked. My dad gets me to take him here for his birthday or Fathers Day. He would tell you to get the lamb stew or the spaghetti bolognese. I would tell you to look out for the seafood spaghetti, and if you get it, order a side of french bread to mop up the garlicky, herby sauce. Or try the chicken baguette — yes I know that most cafes do them, but is the chicken ever so slightly warm, and tender to the bite? I think not! The dishes here are slightly more expensive than standard café lunches — they are usually between 7 and 10 pounds, but the portions are large and the quality is superb. The coffees are great too. The owner takes his coffee quality very seriously. As I discovered when I foolishly requested a shot of syrup in my latte and he told me that I was ‘naff’ for asking for such a thing. Getting an education whilst having your lunch? What’s not to love?
