It is many years since my wife and I went strawberry picking every summer. We were persuaded to try pumpkin picking this autumn by our children — especially for their children. Jasmine(2) and Daisy(1) both had a wonderful day and didn’t want to come home(although Daisy did fall asleep as soon as we left the car park!) There were many different sized pumpkins in a polytunnel near the entrance and the chance to go into the field to pick your own. On the way was a field of corn — as Daisy loves it, we picked some. She immediately grabbed one and ate it as we walked around. We ended up with about fifty(two or three days worth for her!), then tried the maize maze — more fun for the littlies. After food and a drink at the superb café and a play on the child park(better for older children really) we picked raspberries. The shop itself has a huge variety of products from the usual farm produce through local bottled ales and ciders to speciality vegetable oils. I have to say that some of the prices were rather too steep for me, but this was balaced by the many bargains to be had — and the produce couldn’t be any fresher!

We went strawberry picking one fine saturday to Kenyon Hall Farm. The farm is not too far from J22 of the M6 and has a decent sized car park. The only way into the picking area is through the farm shop and café. You queue up, choose a picking basket and follow the teddy bear to get to the strawberry fields. Spend as much time as you like, pick as many strawberries as your basket can hold and then return to the farm shop and pay for the day’s haul. The farm shop also sells locally sourced meats, sausages, vegetables, preserves, jams etc. They also have a café selling hot and cold food and drinks, which are reasonably priced. In addition to picking your own, you also have the option to buy potted plants and bring them home. I think we got some basil, mint and chilli. I thoroughly enjoyed the strawberry picking experience, which was enhanced by a sunny day. I would definitely recommend this place, especially if you have little kids that need to be entertained on a fine summer’s day.

A great pick-your-own place: highly recommended. The farm is readily accessible from the M6(it’s only a mile from Junction 22 down Winwick Lane), and an excellent website( ) keeps you up-to-date with what’s currently in season. There’s ample car-parking and even a very small play area for children. The range of what’s on offer is very good — a large number of fields have been set aside for pick-your-own, and they are helpfully signposted too. We’ve been fruit-picking several times and have been very impressed with the quality of what’s on offer. There’s also a small farm shop which offers the usual sorts of things. All in all, a great place to visit in season — go once and you’ll almost certainly go again!
