Food was greasy, service incompetent, atmosphere thin. Maybe we caught it on a bad day, but not inclined to go back, despite being our nearest restaurant.

Microwaved food and waitress without patience rolling her eyes every time you ask a question. Bad day I guess

I have only ever been here for lunch. At £3.70 a meal you cannot go wrong! Its super good and tasty. I would go here for dinner as well as the menu doesn’t seem to differ much from the lunch time one. If you want good food, Traditional Portuguese /Madeiran, you cannot go wrong!

Never tried Portuguese food before, but I really liked it. The staff are friendly and chatty which made a good impression on me. The décor itself is nice and clean. Even though I live pretty far from here I’m thinking of going back again.

I’ve tried Portuguese dishes for the first time in Windmill they are quite good actually. I will definitely try again although the location in not particularly convenient.

Likely the best Portuguese food outside of Portugal. Each time I’ve been here, it’s been consistently amazing. Sometimes service can be kind of iffy if it’s crowded, but most of the time it’s great. Very atmospheric and authentic: candlelit tables, great décor(they sell art from local artists on the walls), and not too cramped. I’ve gotten the piri piri chicken, beef skewers, their breakfast dish, a lamb dish, and some assorted tapas. The beef was probably my least favorite; some of the pieces were a bit fatty and it was a little bit overdone, but it was still good. Also, the food is around £10 a person for dinner, but they have great lunch specials around £4−5. Overall, this place is the best restaurant on the Walthamstow High Street and if you’re looking for great, reasonably priced food, look no further.

The Windmill is located at the St James Street end of the High Street in an unprepossessing part of town. However once inside one could be in a taverna in Portugal. We visited for about the fourth time last night. Tapas dishes are about £4-£5 only and cover fish, meat and vegetable offerings. We had Piri Piri Chicken, Beef Ensopado, Chorizo with Broad Beans, Provencal Potatoes, Portugese Cod Fish Cakes, 2 x Garlic Prawns, Grilled Sardines and some bread and olives. This was accompanied by two bottles of House Red Wine which at £9.99 a bottle was unbelievably good value. The total bill was just £66 or £22 per head. The quality of the food was homely rather than fine cuisine but none the worse for that. To my mind it represented terrific value and the very drinkable wine was a snip.

I am definitely THE person to write this review. I’ve been here at least twice a week for the past year! Since it’s close to where I work, it’s my usual spot. They have an awesome lunch special! A hot meal for only £3.70! Plus a drink will only take you back less than £5. You really can’t beat that. They have about 20 small main dishes to chose from, and then you chose a side of rice, chips, sauteed potatoes, or salad. Though the mains can vary in quality, it never fails to satisfy me. My usual is the spare ribs with chips. Lots of meat and carbs that carry me on through the day. It can get quite busy here during lunch. Probably because it’s the only nice sit-down restaurant that isn’t middle eastern. They are also very welcoming to parents and babies. They are breast-feeding friendly. So sometimes you have to dodge your way past kids and strollers to get to table! It’s well worth it. Though the ambiance is nothing special, but they do decorate it quite nice and romantically for dinner time. It’s probably not worth traveling all the way out to Walthamstow for, but it’s clear why this place is a local favorite! Great food, great prices, and an all around cozy place!

Almost ‘disguised’ as yet another run of the mill caff from the outside, The Windmill is a hidden gem in Walthamstow. Portuguese tapas that are rammed full of flavour, perfectly cooked, decent sized dishes and fantastic value for money — especially if you’re in a larger group. Since becoming licensed they do now charge £3/bottle corkage, which isn’t outrageous!

Tucked away down the far end of Walthamstow high street, the Windmill tapas restaurant is something of a hidden gem. Every meal I’ve had here has been really tasty, and the byo policy helps contribute to the excellent value for money. I would recommend the lamb with rosemary or the clams in spicy sauce !

Big portions, very tasty simple cooking. The patatas bravas are definitely a star — spicey and well-cooked. A caff menu of omelettes, breakfasts etc. sits alongside the Tapas classics menu — and it all delivers what you’d expect: hearty stuff done well without any fanciness. And it’s very kid-friendly. Friendly all-round really!

Great local restuarant. Very friendly and service was efficient on my last visit. My Portguese friend is not aware of the concept of Portuguese tapas, so authenticity might be a doubt. Meat dishes were delicious and notably more successful than vegetable ones. In my experience, you can BYO wine for small corkage fee and a polite request. Very good value.

Lovely little Portuguese tapas restaurant. Very family friendly. Often go along for sunday brunch and nice buzzy atmosphere. The patates bravas are spicy and delicious — my favourite, particularly with an ice cold Sagres beer.
