This was our first night in the London area and we had a great time at Eel Pie. It was by far the best fish and chips and minty peas we had the entire time we were in England(and I ate Fish & Chips daily for lunch and again and for dinner). Wanted to keep going back but we were always too far to go in our travels around the city.

Located towards the end of lovely picturesque Church Street, just up from the river, Eel Pie pub exudes warmth and welcome. It certainly conveys its heritage of rugby and tradition, serving regional ales and some classic pub food. It’s a popular local choice and a nice spot to enjoy an afternoon drink.

I went here for the Olympics closing ceremony because it was the one pub in the area open late for it. I wasn’t expecting much, but the evening turned out to be a lot of fun! There were some local English ales on cask that I’d never heard of before, so I tried a couple and was suitably impressed. Several TVs and a large projector screen were showing the ceremony, so we found a table with a few locals and sat down. More people came in as the ceremony went on, and after an hour or so of British music the mood changed pretty dramatically — the alcohol was hitting, people were feeling good, and the singing started! I’m not sure what this place is usually like on a Sunday night(probably not as exciting as it was that night), but I would definitely go back on another night to test it out.

This is one of my favourite pubs in the area. Its old-world feel, central location and good selection of real ales make it ideal for either a pre-dinner drink or a full evening session. The average age of the clientele is slightly higher than would be found in a typical lager-only establishment, but this just adds to the relaxed, amiable atmosphere. There’s an unobtrusive flat-screen TV in one corner, for sports fans, but unless there’s a big game on, it doesn’t overpower conversation. In summer, it’s possible to bag one of the outdoor tables, situated on a tiny cobbled road, which is closed to traffic in the evenings.
