This was such an unexpectedly nice afternoon out. It can be quite hard finding a beach close to home that’s nice enough to spend quite a bit of time at, but Troon South Beach is a great area. It’s a long stretch of beach, without a massive trek out to the water and it doesn’t seem like a beach that gets over crowded. There is plenty of room for picnickers, sunbathers, sandcastle enthusiasts and sports without you intruding on any personal space. I personally think that with the amount of seaweed on the beach it could probably do with a bit more maintenance but it was clean enough and having spent most of my childhood summers on a beach down south I know how costly this maintenance can be to a small town. The little shop near the end of the stretch of beach sells all things«day out» from a bucket and spade to seaside chippy chips. They also have free to enter public toilets that were quite well maintained. Right near by there’s a small amusements/fairground area and a little further down there’s a large play park that was very popular! We didn’t have a lot of time to spend here but I really enjoyed our family afternoon out and will definitely be back again when the mood strikes.

We just happened upon South Beach on a warm Sunday afternoon after having a look at Barrasie beach and Devine it was far too windswept. Luckily South Beach was afforded some protection from the wind due to the harbour and some beachside apartments further down. This beach looks to be well kept and although it was such a warm day, was not all that busy. There’s a handy beach kiosk selling your usual beach type toys, mats and wind breakers along with ice cream, drinks and chips — glorious seaside chips drowned in vinegar! There’s is also a small funfair for the kids when they need a break from building sandcastle a and burying each other. Parking is on street, free and ample for the amount of visitors and is only a short walk away from the beach front. The only thing letting it down is that the beach could do with being raked as it is at some more maintained beaches to get rid of the dried out seaweed pieces that are around but really, it’s only a small point and perhaps it is not cost effective, we will be back for the next bout of sun either way.

Troon is a small town on the Firth of Clyde on Scotland’s west coast about 30 miles south-west of Glasgow. The name comes from the Gaelic ‘An t-Sròn’ meaning ‘the bill’ or ‘the nose’ Whilst Troon is probably most famous for the Royal Troon Golf Club the town offers a great deal more such as sandy beaches and stunning views out towards the mountainous scenery of the Island of Arran, there is a port port with a marina and a popular spot for holidaymakers. The beach is well maintained with dogs banned from May to September and the shore is used by windsurfers and kite enthusiasts, easy to access and the lively esplanade offers ice creams and fish and chips
