Steamer Quay is something of a new kid on the block for Torquay. well that is to say it has been open for three years now but it is a complete change to the local gay scene. Upstairs is a funky bar with stripped wood everywhere and modern lighting and dance music — the drinks a more like those you get in the city bars, and tend to be more expensive than in other bars in the bay, but you are paying for a totally different ambience to the other 2 bars;and probably an ambience that is more familiar to the younger crowd escaping from Manchester, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Brighton and London. During the summer months the floor to ceiling windows are open to the street giving it an even more cosmopolitan mainland european feel and a very modern Yes we’re gay, get over it feel to your drink in the evening. There is another side to this building though, and that is in the cellar — don’t worry Mother it isn’t one of those dark room things — it is a very modern and extensive mens sauna complex with a huge jacuzzi, pleasant bar and chill out area, clean and well appointed steam room and sauna and some comfortable rest rooms. This side of the business is frequented by all age groups in that non-ism way that the south west is famous for, although, to be fair so is the upstairs bar, but for those who don’t enjoy dance music — personally we love it, even at our age — you would be better suited to the Clipper or the Meadfoot where you still have the chance of meeting someone younger than yourself, if that is what your intention is.
