1st thing that got my attention about this joint is its name. As a visiting American tourist from SoCal, I’m like, that’s cool. We stopped by for lunch, I had the grilled chicken with mushroom and a light lager. My cousin, who is a native, ordered the Tortillas as an appetizer. I’m like my 1st Mexican dish in the UK and it sucked. The Guacamole tasted store bought, the cheese had melted into a glob & clung to the chips like death to a corpse. The salsa was horrid. Lol. I suppose Mexican food isn’t as big here as it is in Southern California. However, I liked my sandwich & the beef & Guinness pie was delicious.

When I am back in the UK I usually take my father here for Sunday lunch. It has a normal menu with typical British Pub grub(read scampi, fish and chips, lasagna and so on) but on a Sunday there is a Carvery. I’ve eaten from both menus and the portions are American sized and you certainly won’t leave hungry. The Carvery on a Sunday is like a Zoo, you wait in line with a hot plate and someone carves various meats(Turkey, Gammon, Beef and Lamb) and gives you a generous portion. You then help yourself to a mountain of typical British Sunday Roast vegetables and Yorkshire Puddings. This is the most messy part of the Carvery and the poorest quality. The roast potatoes are an odd combination of cooked(often burnt) on the outside and raw in the middle. The carrots are gritty, the brussel sprouts are soggy on the outside and hard in the middle. The cauliflower cheese is so visually divorced from cauliflower or cheese that it resembles rice pudding. My father likes it however and that’s all that matters I guess! Let’s say that they have gone for quantity over quality.

The dining area is like sitting in an old folks home! And the food matches that criteria. I had stuffed plaice which was cremated — dry, rock hard and was stuffed with a bland white sauce not prawns and mushrooms as suggested on the menu. When we told the waiter he looked gormless and had no idea what to do — so did nothing! Our friend had a steak pie … he never found he steak, just mushrooms! The cavery is made up of frozen veg, aunt Bessy yorkshires and processed meat… all served on a side plate. You are not allowed any more than one visit, thats the rules, even for gravy! No home cooked food here… processed and bland. When we ordered the fruit crumble we were given apple pie! The staff didn’t appear bothered by our miserable experience at their restaurant! Oh well, we won’t be going back EVER and recommending friends and family to avoid it at all costs.

This is just average. The place is pretty basic, so are the staff. The Meals are massive, but not very good. My fish was 4 inches shorter than the batter, it had been double battered and fried to extinction. The Frajitas, huge, nice enough, but absolutely no spice or seasoning at all. Best I could say would be cheap and cheerful, if you know what to order.

These guys saved our vegetarian @$$e$ while we were in town, staying down the M4 at the Hilton. The Proprietress was so lovely and made Cauliflower bakes for us that were Dee-licious! Real friendly staff and patrons. Great all-around vibe. Thanks ever so much for taking us yanks under your treasured wing.

Popular road house on the main road into Wootton Bassett from Swindon. Had a makeover in about 2002, has a nice conservatory feel to the dining area. Arkells ales, and a short menu with good if unimaginative food. Very popular with families at weekends.

This is an average pub. We met up with family here as it was half way between our houses. Greatly located just off the M4, very easy to find. It was just before Christmas and a Sunday. They had the carvery open and were very acommodating towards my mother, who is disabled. They queued up for her, whilst we dealt with the kids and oursleves. They couldn’t be more helpful/patient at a busy time. The food was of a good quality and quantity. Car park attached.
