Arrgh the moral dilemmas, the ethical cut and thrust, the personal feelings of guilt about rating Tesco, the largest food/retail giant in the UK. To make the rating fair, I shall therefore rely upon my scientific training and look closely at the evidence for my decision. I shall start with an average 3 stars. My local Tesco Extra superstore stocks thousands of products from food to household goods to clothing to electrical items to petrol. Tesco Direct can order stuff in. There’s an opticians, photo service and a café. I can even get goods like Maggi instant noodles, rambutans and mangosteen that I could previously only get in Chinatown. It’s just so convenient. PLUS1 star Tesco is a retail giant, sucking in 1 in 8 retail pounds in the UK. It’s turning into an unstoppable giant and without government intervention, threatens to turn into one of those mega corporations that dwarfs governments as portrayed in numerous sci fi movies. I wonder if the UK government should follow the example of the Malaysian government in limiting the expansion of Tesco to allow some competition. MINUS1 star My Tesco store is open 24 hours except overnight at the weekends. I love late night shopping — no crowds, music in the store, full shelves of goods or if you can’t find something, the shelf stackers are helpful in going to find stuff for you. And everyone seems so much less stressed and happier at midnight. PLUS1 star Tesco is using its dominant monopoly position to bully suppliers and buy up land banks to prevent rivals from expanding in some areas. It’s destroying city centres and small independent shops. Accusations abound of aggressive pricing policies to drive smaller shops out of business before raising prices again. MINUS1 star Tesco Clubcard is a great loyalty scheme with a really good range of offers for redeeming Clubcard points. I use mine to collect Airmiles. PLUS1 star Tesco Clubcard is a cheap marketing and profiling tool for Tesco to find out about our demographics and shopping habits. MINUS1 star Tesco is attempting to improve its green cerdentials by offering points for reusing bags and recycling printer cartridges. PLUS1 point My local Tesco Extra store’s 2nd exit is never open. MINUS1 star So, in conclusion, Tesco gets a solid 3 stars. Yes, it’s a bit mean to deduct a star for an exit but my conscience won’t let me award this mega corporation more than that.
