I first discovered The Terrace when having pre and post-meal drinks during a visit to Moor Hall’s The Oak Room restaurant. The trouble was, as so often the case, I preferred the preamble to the main event. Perhaps it was because I caught it on a sunny day, which of course, makes all the difference. It’s essentially a seasonal attraction, although it becomes a legitimate sun trap on the best days. Think of it principally as a bar, rather than a dining venue — and given the setting of stately Moor Hall, one of the best in town. It’s just that bit more informal than elegant The Oak Room, yet a step or two up from carvery-with-bells-on Country Kitchen on the same site. The Terrace is legitimately a venue unto itself and, therefore, open to non-guests. Just don’t let talk of the views fool you. It’s not the worst vista in the world, but the landscaped grounds are actually those of the associated golf course. Your third drink could soon become … fore. While a sunset tipple, away from boozy crowds, may be just the ticket after work, and ultimately how The Terrace is pitched, it does offer those sometimes rather dirty words: bar menu. It’s not bad though and a new feature — yet to be tried — may either be perfect or style over substance. See what you think: It’s called hot rocks and allows you to cook a choice of salmon, steak or lamb to your individual taste on a hot slab at your table. Hot rock or hot air… I’ll let you know…
