Not a bad boozer around the Stockport town area but probably more of a 2.5. Put it this way — there’s much better Robbies bars around but then there’s much worse — this one fits right in the middle. Fairly generic selection of bitters and lagers on tap, they did seem to have a few speciality Robbies beers and pump clips at the back but they had no description on them and I couldn’t tell if they were for sale or just promotional material. A fairly towny atmosphere with lots of peeps in here after work on a Friday, not greatly my scene but alright just to grab a swifty on the way to somewhere else.

Stockport is blessed with an insane amount of pubs even now, in times of decline in the pub trade, I can’t imagine how many there were in it’s heyday. Robinson’s is by far the most represented brewery in Stockport, you’re never going to go short of a pint of one of their beers and The Red Bull, just a minute or two walk from the brewery is as good a place as any to get a pint or two. A smart, quite large boozer that gets busy at lunchtimes and on a Sunday, it’s the sort of place you’d be happy to go with a parent or in-law for a quiet drink and a pub lunch. The Sunday dinner was pretty good as they go(I’m not really a Sunday lunch fan), decent roasties, an OK piece of pork and plenty of gravy kept me happy — it’s not going to get Tom Kerridge worried, but it wasn’t bad. Most of my visits here have been as part of a session, with so many pubs in Stockport to choose from you’d be mad to stick to one place(if I did have to stick to one place it would probably be The Magnet or Baker’s Vaults). Dark wood, a few small snug areas and your standard sort of menu make it not particularly exciting, but worth a stop off nonetheless.

Another Robbie’s in Stockport centre. A relaxed feel without coming across as grubby. Fairly large but doesn’t feel too impersonal. This place would never be my favourite pub, but I’d be happy enough here.

I don’t usually quote websites in a review, but The Red Bull is described as follows, «Relax in the comfortable surroundings of our lovely ‘Country pub in the Town’ with cosy fires, friendly staff and beautiful furnishings». I think that’s a pretty fair description. I’ve only visited a couple of times, but have found it to be extremely relaxing pub to grab a beer and scan one of the interesting books they have available. The last one I read was about the P&O company and their trading in India.
